So, I had been on TikTok and saw a cakecuterie board for girls night and I didn’t feel like baking a bunch of cakes/ going to a wedding cake store, so I google cake by the slice and this came up. The reviews varied and I was wondering how it could be so hit or miss. The atmosphere is so cute in downtown Garland. And I ordered a California club on a croissant as well as a cup of soup to go. It was good and hit the spot. It was also huge and I was able to split with my husband. Back to the cake situation. The display case looks amazing and is a feast for the eyes. But I think the reason for the varied reviews is not inconsistency, but rather expectation. We sampled the strawberry swirl, lemon, chocolate, red velvet, Italian cream, strawberry cheesecake, and turtle cheesecake. If you bake and are not accustomed to grocery store cake, you will not be impressed. All the icing had a waxy taste and is made with Crisco/ lard- rather than butter. I get that being in TX butter makes it hard to transport bc your icing will melt. But also the “whipped cream” that decorates things is not made from just heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla. It is waxy as well. The red velvet and chocolate are missing the deep dark cacao powder, so have a faint taste. Lemon didn’t have crisco in icing- so that was a plus. If you are the type of person that a grocery store cake is acceptable, this is a slight upgrade and doesn’t taste like cardboard like a Kroger/ target cake. The flavors are light and not rich. And the icing is the typical grocery store style. My husband enjoyed the cheesecakes the most. One friend preferred the strawberry swirl. I liked the Italian cream the best. It wasn’t as moist as the others but seemed better quality. I will def return for a lunch with sandwich and soups- I will not be indulging in cake. Will try out the danishes or something else and see if...
Read moreI usually go here for the sandwiches and they make a really good German potato salad. Unfortunately, whoever the woman was wearing the dark hat/wearing a hoodie working the register on May 11 at 9:45 AM was RUDE. She was curt when she took my order, which didn't bother me. She honestly looked really tired and I just figured she was having a bad day; we are only human and everyone has a bad day once in awhile.
But when my order was called I asked her for a bag since I purchased multiple items. She hears me, walks past me and the bags. This took place at the food pick up counter so it wasn't like I could reach in and grab a bag. She is gone for like a minute. Then she walks past me again holding 3 white boxes and is gone for a minute again. I guess she realized I wasn't leaving until I got a bag to carry my items and she comes back to me and places a bag on the counter.
So I know she heard me ask for the bag the first time but purposely chose to be rude and ignore me. I had to go back to work or I would have said something in the moment. When I called them to speak about my experience a woman named Valerie picked up and was suspiciously clueless about who I was talking about even though I was very descriptive and there were only 2 cashiers working there when I came in lol. The other cashier was wearing a hat and pink shirt and she was nice. To be fair, most of the people here are really nice except for the...
Read moreOk first off, the food at Latham is outstanding! So so good! I frequent this place for lunch and love everything I’ve ordered. Sandwiches are great (I highly recommend the chicken salad croissant), soups are perhaps even better (roasted poblano is out of this world good), and of course their coffees and sweets are endless and delicious. Seriously, love them!
The only reason I couldn’t give 5 stars is the custom order. They fell a little flat on a custom cake order for my kiddo’s first birthday. They asked me to email photos for inspiration, I did. And nearly a week passed without a reply. So I called and they said they got the email. Communication, not great. But I love their cake so I didn’t stress and figured I would trust the pros. Called to confirm the day before pickup it would be ready, they assured me it would be. Well it wasn’t. It was delayed by about 2 hours and the final product looked, well, unfinished. For a state fair theme, we got corny dogs without a stick, Big Tex with his hand cut off and writing that frankly looked like my one year old did it himself.
I will be coming back here. I love the food, but I don’t know that I will be paying $70+ for a custom cake again when the bakery at target could likely pull this off better and for half the price. Hoping this helps some momma’s out there who may be party planning...
