Presentation was very high.
Food quality:
Vaquero "cowboy" Burrito (aka CA burrito) (added dual meat) The carne asada was said to be "rib eye", but was chewy and not as fatty as BBQ places usually are. Flavor was decent and cuts were decent for a burrito.
Al pastor/adobada was slightly better than the typical chorizo type adobada, especially popular in white washed /tex-mex places like they tend to be in AZ. But definitely not Tijuana grade adobada, made popular to Chicano culture in Baja California.
This is presented as Sonoran Mexican food, which is alright, but Tijuana style food always wins hands down in my book, when they do it right.
I had asked for Pico on the side but it was put inside instead, which usually clashes with the flavor profile a bit. (3.5/5)
Taco The tacos construction is what I'd consider a medium sized taco, but was hyped as large. Guacamole was generous and good, meat was cut into large pieces which were hard to chew. The meat quality seemed more like thick cut typical carne asada, not ribeye (4/5)
Horchata The horchata was decent, but didn't have the authentic flavor of canela and arroz an agua taken from a Mexican grocery store would have. The flavor was there but overpowered by sweetness, it tasted a bit sweeter, like a syrup based machine style. (3/5)
The cheesecake was typical NY style, the syrup and marshmallow sauce were a nice touch. I typically prefer nobake style which is less known (3/5)
Churro fries were interesting, the texture was like a crunchy Churro but inside lacked the soft core which made it snap. Instead as you eat it, it just squished. But it wasn't greasy, so it was decent. The agave caramel sauce was an interesting touch for those with a sweet tooth. (3/5)
Rice and refried beans These were great, no complaints except tye portion size was a bit smaller than I'm used to for the beans in their cute little skillet bowl but overall not bad (4.5/5)
Lastly their tipping system is off. When selecting a 10% tip, it calculated and displayed the value of a 14-15% tip as a result.
The atmosphere First thing we noticed was the blacked out dispensary windows. Must be nice during the summer but it does make it seem a bit unwelcoming. Once we went in we noticed this place is much smaller than expected. Which can be cozy to some. I was expecting Spanish or mariachi music...but instead heard white country music playing which made me think I was in the wrong place at first. But the booths were comfortable to sit in and staff was very...
Read moreMy wife and I came in with high hopes, drawn by the buzz surrounding Lujos Cocina Mexicana. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the marketing.
We ordered at the counter, and to their credit, the staff were warm, helpful, and offered thoughtful recommendations. They even brought our food to the table, which was a nice touch.
But the service far outshined the food. I had the Carne Asada Plate—well seasoned, yes, but the meat was so tough it was nearly impossible to cut, even with a steak knife. The rice and beans were flavorless, lacking even basic seasoning. My wife ordered the Lujo burrito and was equally disappointed. The fries inside were soggy, and the shrimp hadn’t been deveined—a basic preparation step that no restaurant should overlook.
The atmosphere didn’t help. Throughout our meal, the cook carried on a loud conversation with a customer about catering logistics. It felt intrusive and unprofessional, especially when a simple “please contact us later” would have sufficed.
Despite the friendly staff, I can’t recommend Lujos Cocina Mexicana. The food quality and ambiance simply don’t justify the price. There’s potential here, but it’s buried under poor execution and...
Read moreUsed to come to this place when it was Humberto’s but as I drove by today, I noticed it was updated to now, Lujos. I almost kept driving home but something told me that I needed to pull in and check it out. And oh my goodness am I so glad I did. I was absolutely amazed by how incredible this placed has turned out with the new and improved update! The inside and all around ambiance was stunning. Love the black out vibe and the amazing customer service. I asked a few questions and was assured that everything is made from scratch and fresh to order. I ordered take out and I got myself a carne asada burrito and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! I’m rarely amazed by restaurants carne asada as it never really turns out how I expect. But this burrito blew my expectations out of the water. They are not stingy w the portions either, as most places are. (MY BURRITO WAS HUGE!) And the quality of the ingredients and the meat was chefs kiss! I tried my best to finish it all but couldn’t & I saved about half for my hubby to try when he got home and he agreed on everything I have stated! THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE SPOT AND I CANT WAIT TO COME BACK AND TRY DIFFERENT ITEMS ON THE MENU!!...
