✨New Breakfast Spot✨ This was my first time trying Matt’s Big Breakfast! I know. Crazy!! Especially since their downtown Phoenix location opened back in 2004 and they’ve been growing ever since with the Gilbert location being their fifth spot (not counting their skyharbor location). I’m glad we finally have them in the east valley! <<See my reels for what we ordered & loved!>> I know for sure I need to revisit to try other items from them. Let me know if you’ve been and what your go to orders are ☺️! 📍 @mattsbigbreakfast 🗺️ 3150 E Ray Rd, Ste 158, Gilbert, AZ 85296 🪑 Patio seating available #panthereats #breakfastfood #breakfastideas #eastvalleyaz #eastvalleymoms #arizonalife #arizonaliving #azfood #azeats #arizonafoodie #gilbertaz #gilbertarizona #epicenteraz #brunchgoals #breakfastlover #foodreels #instaaz #thingstodoinarizona

This is a complicated review and I will do my utmost to be fair. I had always wanted to try Matt’s Big Breakfast back when they had a single location and were known for their breakfast fair. They opened a location within walking distant to our home so we decided to give it a try for our 4th of July breakfast out. The location was nice and cheery and the staff were very bubbly, friendly and helpful. The menu is a bit odd, they have a daily special but you can only get that special in that day. For example they have a biscuits and gravy breakfast special on Tuesday but you can only get it on Tuesday. I decided to order the cheese omelette and added roasted peppers and sausage, and had the hash browns and sour dough toast. My wife had the waffle and bacon. We both ordered coffee as well. To start the coffee was very weak and not drinkable for me. My omelet came and it was very greasy and was just eggs with some fixing out in the middle, not what I would consider an omelet but technically it was. The egg had zero seasoning and was very bland. There was too much grease and the favors were just not good to me. The hash browns were stale and looked old to me and the flavor was not good. I would not say it was bad, just not for me. My wife enjoyed her waffle and said the bacon was very good. Now after all that the manager found out I was not enjoying my food and offered to fix me something else. I decline, as I said just not for me but not bad per se. after a short time the manager returned with a plate of food for me to try. He said there was no charge and they he just wanted to be sure I didn’t leave hungry. That was amazing to me and shows what a good manager is. They did not charge me for my breakfast at all and I could not be more grateful for that. I want to say it was a holiday and maybe things were a bit off. I know we will give them another try and I really wish I could give them a 5 star review for their amazing customer service.

This was another restaurant that I was excited to try since it is near my home and I saw a lot of good things online at other locations in the valley. Unfortunately, this is another Epicenter disappointment. We got their early to avoid crowds and waiting. The greeting into the restaurant felt unwelcoming and the initial waiter had little energy and did not seem happy at the very slightest. We were not offered water or assisted in anyway on what good things we should order on the menu. There was a waitress that took over for him shortly after who had a lot more enthusiasm which I can certainly give her a 5/5. Atmosphere was nice until a fire alarm went off in the building and remained in for maybe 15 min until turning off. It was loud as hell, but it appeared to be a false alarm. My food finally came out and there was a hair embedded in my butter on top of my griddle cakes. They took it back and made a new one. It took a while to get them remade while I had nibble on my spouses food. When the pancakes came out, they weren’t as great as I was anticipating, but they were edible. The bacon that my spouse had wasn’t as great as I was anticipating either. It tasted cold and burnt and peppery. If I was a manager I would have given a discount or comped the griddle cakes for us having hair in our food and being there during a loud false building alarm. Didn’t get a thank you for stopping by at the end or anything. The only thing good about this place that I found was: supposedly they use fresh ingredients for their food, the waitress who filled in for a not so great waiter, the music (when it was heard when an alarm wasn’t going off), and the coffee. The coffee was good and came in a nice cup . That’s about it. I wouldn’t come here again if that is the quality of service and food.

I believe this "place" has been overly hyped as far as the branding goes. If you are a tourist, it is worth visiting the original Matt's Big Breakfast location (Not this location).

With that being said, as a local here, I heard so much about the food and, yes, you can read about the bacon being local. It is thick cut bacon and not the thin slice crispy ones. The hash browns are definitely not made fresh. They look like they just came out of a ramen packaging. I love hash browns and this is minus one star for me. Save yourself some money and do not order the hash browns if your meal does not include it.

Toast came with jam but nobody tells you what the jam is. It is fun to play guess the jam but the toast is better than the hash browns (yeah I know, I was just really disappointed by the hash browns, sorry.)

No other sides when you order the waffle with bacon. Feels incomplete but for a couple bucks more you get one egg or for $6 more you get three eggs, a couple bucks more, you can get some terrible hash browns, and a couple bucks more you can get some toast with jam. OR for just $10 you can just have the waffle with butter and Vermont maple syrup. They don't have whip cream. Only butter. The syrup is okay or how younger people say, "it's mid".

The customer service, staff personality, and the atmosphere is what saves this place. We were greeted, welcomed and taken care of. We love the multiple staff taking care of you, but, as a former server, that could also mean the tip is all split down a pool tip system. I love team work but little things get missed like the person dropping off the food not letting us know what type of jam we are getting. We had one server who checked on us and the table next to us so often that I wanted to give her the tip personally. The other seated us, gsve us our drinks and never came back to check on refills until I asked the super star server for more refills. I want to do a shout out for her but I dont want her to feel like she is outshining everyone. That is minus one star, not because of the staff, but, "everyone is your server" system is businesses' way of not hiring enough staff and burn out the good ones while the low performing staff gets paid or tipped out the same is something I do...

Decided to try Matt's since I had heard they had wonderful food. I was looking forward to trying, and so we went to the Gilbert location, since it's closest to our house. We walked in and were warmly greeted by staff and told to "sit anywhere" which we did. We were offered drinks right away, so we both ordered the coffee. Suggestion: Don't order the coffee. It arrived lukewarm, and weak. One strike so far. I ordered the pancakes and my husband ordered the cheese omelete with roasted red peppers, onions, and tomatoes, with swiss cheese, hashbrowns and sourdough toast. My pancakes arrived very hot. I used the one small pat of butter to spread but since the butter was hard and cold, it would not spread. I tasted my pancakes and they were basically flavorless. The texture was light and fluffy, which is good, but no flavor at all, and a bit on the dry side. I had to ask for more butter to be able to eat them. My husband said his omelete had no onions and these cheese they used was cheap, like a processed cheese. The egg didn't taste fully cooked and the omelete was oily, maybe from the processed cheese. The hashbrowns were bland, like they needed some seasoning. The manager came over and asked us if we wanted to take our food to go, and I said "no" and then told him my pancakes were flavorless and dry. I told him they should use some salt, vanilla, and more fat (butter) in the batter, and he did not look happy at all with my suggestions. Well, since I can cook a better breakfast at home, we won't be back to Matt's. I wish them well, and with a few minor adjustments, it would really improve their food. Such as: Use a stronger coffee and make sure it's served piping hot, make some minor changes to your pancake batter by adding salt, vanilla and more butter so the pancakes aren't so dry, season your food and use higher quality ingredients, like better eggs and cheese. The only positives are it's clean, and the staff are nice and friendly. The manager could have been more open to constructive...
