This place is totally overrated. The hostess is so rude and condescending she kept starring at us up and down. Beware that this place is tinny! Very very small. Our table was so small we could barely fit our phones and both drinks. I choose this bar for this specific reason: my friend visiting from Mexico (who happens to be an influencer) wanted to record her experience with the cool decor. We decided to take ONE selfie in one of the big tables, a girl came and asked us to get out of the table because a party of 6 was gonna arrive. We had been there for 20 min and there was no one, but as soon as we sat there for ONE pic the table police came. She was so rude to us and I said a picture takes only one second. We finished our drinks and left after 45 min (this is a 90 min experience). I felt embarrassed for taking my friend there and took her to a better bar. Needless to say I am never going back. PS. Steve the manager wrote me an email: In the meantime, we would love another chance to impress. I've included a promo code inviting you to book an upcoming visit at UnderTow for up to 4 guests. This promo code will WAIVE the pre-payment deposit and non-refundable booking fee, which allows you to re-visit us with no up-front payment and the ability to just pay for what you order when you visit. To use the promo code ANOTHERCHANCE, you can enter it at checkout once booking your upcoming reservation HERE. Steve, waving a “fee” is not going to impress me. I worked in CS for 8 years! Impressing a customer with a less than stelar experience is inviting them back for free drinks. BUT, thank you anyhow.

I have to say that this review is purely based on expectations. I had heard great things about this place and it was a must visit. It is touted as a drinking experience but if fact is a fancy bar. If I was told it was just a pirate themed bar and left it at that, it would have met my expectations. I was under the impression that a drinking experience might entail a story themed journey with cocktails that follow the theme along with the interactive environment. Alas, no. You have to make reservations and then put money down to hold it (very odd, at least for me) even though the money goes towards the tab, still feels odd to pre-pay for your night... and it aint cheap. The drinks menu is cool and very descriptive of the drinks but you just find out that they are fancy versions of regular bar drinks. You also can't go off menu which is odd with a fully stacked bar. I asked for a mojito and they wouldn't make it.... its still an "island drink"? Drinks were good, but costly for what they were. The place is also a lot smaller than you would think. The atmosphere is pretty cool overall and has some intermittent effects of a storm and the portholes give you the feeling of being on a ship. The bar tenders are catered to you specifically but they are wearing Hawaiian shirts which felt out of place and should have been more pirate themed if you ask me. Overall, I may go back if some people are in town and want something different to do but I wouldn't call it an experience.

This was such a unique experience! the atmosphere here was incredible. This really felt like you were inside the keel of an old ship. the only thing that would make it more authentic in that regard would be if they could make the entire room sway and bob to the waves haha. My Wife and I visited for the first time, and we were not disappointed. every drink we had was amazing and delicious! -------------------------------------- Shots Fired - Chains to the Mast! Shots Fired - Shells and Shrapnel! --------- Shots Fired were basically, mixed drink shots. they come in really cool little copper shot glasses with handles -------------------------------------- Stirred - Madame Emilie's Effects (Expensive but SOOOO GOOD!) Stirred - Sound of Sinners (Pictured) --------- The Stirred drinks were very tasty. Madame Emilie was probably the most amazing drink of this type I have ever tasted, it is soo smooth, Caramel in taste, they serve it to you in this glowing green case out of a vile, and you get quite a bit. make sure you pour every mil out of the vile. This one is pictured, and comes with a scroll to take home. ------------------------------------- Sours - Henderson's Last Journey (Pictured Empty Glass) Sours - Sunrise Over Baja (Pictured) --------- The Sours were very good. Not sour like the name might suggest, but fruity, Fresh, and Both of these I picked were very good spicy. would definitely get them again.

Things you should know ! Make reservations (fee but goes back to your total bill) No food served Drinks are pricey/strong average $15-$22 If you need back support sit at bar or if you have a few people table for 6. You don't have these options when you book so maybe you can call ahead to see what available.

The undertow was a great 1st experience ! It was cool and dark yet enough lighting to see where you are going. When we first arrived the door was closed and it just seemed very mysterious like I want to know whats behind that door because you could not see inside. We walked and came back at reservation time and it was open. A greeter was at the stand and explained we should wait until someone takes us back. On the way in she explained to be careful and pointed out in the restrooms in passing. The decore seemed like the bottom of a ship and being that I just watched the goonies it seemed plausauble lol GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE ! Okay back to undertow. Upon entrance to the bar area lightning struck witch was incredible cool ! We thought it happened when everyone walked in turns out it happens every hour ! But we still felt special!! Also the entire time you are there you hear creaking wood and some sounds in the back it is kind of loud but not to where it disturbed conversation. we sat in a 2 seater. It was okay as far as comfort/ if you need back support most of this place is not for you. Most places have bar stools. The only tables with back support are 2 that sit about 5-6 people. I do wish the table was a little bigger. A little We had 2 waters 2 drinks 2 shots and our 2 undertow menu it took the table up. So if you want to lean on something after a few drinks not possible lol on the tables on the outskirts of bar , possible the bar stools around the bar would be better option then you can lean in.. our waitress checked on us at appropriate times and was amazing at helping to decide our drinks . She knew the menu very well I wish I could remember her name. Only thing I can say is she had the far wall from when you walk in and was a bit older then the rest of crew. Our bartender delivered the drinks which I thought was super cool for some reason nice added touch and he was cheerful! The drinks were pretty strong my friend and I thought which was nice for pricey drinks. I had the exit strategy which was perfect for someone who babysitting drinks .. lol it had fresh banana in it and I could still taste the rum which was strong ! I decided to stick to that drink being that I didn't want to change my vibe. And yes I drank both !! The bathroom was...

I want to love this place. I have wanted to go here for years and when we realized we could make a reservation we did it. It seemed reasonable $30 non refundable deposit. What we didn't know was that there is a fee for a reservation. Then there is a 4% staff benefit fee. Not sure why the owner can't pay that with the $20 drink fee. 5 star establishments don't play that game. So no wonder this place has 4.2. That doesn't happen by accident.

But that is not my issue. My issue is that it's noisy. And my reservation was for a cocktail table in the back which included being interrupted every minute or two by staff trying to get by. And it's loud. Too loud to have a conversation. Too be honest I was board. MY drink sucked. MY wife had the blue Hawaiian and then went next door and barfed after drinking half of it.

I love tikibars but I was left thinking that for the money I spent on 2 drinks I could have almost bought a ticket a Disneyland.

This is a good place to go if you want to get drunk. The drinks are super strong. The atmosphere is pretty. But if you include atmosphere with ambiance. it kind of sucks. It's crowded and loud and not comfortable.

Our drinks also took 15 minutes. Which seemed like an excessive long time even for a full bar because it's so tiny. But that wouldn't be my complaint. It's just loud and packed like you would expect in Old Town Scottsdale.

Also I should add we went before 9PM on Friday. Thinking it would be early enough to not be full of drunks and late enough that the happy hour people would be gone. Big mistake.

Clearly if you want to go here to enjoy a nice drink you can't go on the weekend. Go...
