We got dinner as three couples together under a six person reservation. Overall, the food was good, service left much to be desired, and the restaurant itself was pleasant, if a tad bit loud.
My partner and I shared the Thai Lettuce Wrap with Blackened Salmon appetizer, he got the Scallops with a Caeser salad, I got the Pork Chops with side lobster bisque. We each got a cocktail from their cocktail menu. The wraps were build-your-own style, the salmon itself was very good, but the ratio of lettuce-to-food was quite off, leading us to eat a good bit of it just with our forks. We waited for our cocktails ~thirty minutes, and when we asked for our drinks, the server seemed surprised and confused that we hadn't received them, then seemed to go behind the bar and make the drinks herself. The drinks themselves were decent, if perhaps a bit overpriced.
The scallops were well-cooked and well-seasoned, definitely recommend, but the citrus beurre-blanc was a tad bit over-sweet, didn't feel very well paired with the scallops. The side caeser was good, no complaints. The pork chops were well-cooked, tasty, and moist, the sauce very enjoyable and balanced. The lobster bisque seemed to come out as a concentrate, incredibly thick and tasting of flour, seemed that it wasn't meant to be served that way. The mashed potatoes that came with both dishes were alright, and the steamed vegetables that came with both were bland and soft.
At the server's recommendation, we got The Cookie for dessert for the table. It was described as very large and more than enough for six people. The dish itself was more sized for three or four, the ice cream fairly generic, and the cookie fairly underwhelming and a bit dry.
The service itself is best described as chaotic and strange. When ordering our apps, two couples ordered, and while the third decided what they wanted, the server began walking away. The third couple made a motion to signal that they wanted an app, and as the server came back, she said under her breath "You didn't say anything". There was a secondary server who seemed to just be randomly coming up to tables, chatting, refilling waters, making small talk, it struck our table as just a bit odd, nothing incredibly out-of-the-ordinary, simply odd. When we informed our server that we never got our cocktails, she said "I'll talk to the manager about that", which signaled to us that our drinks would be comped after the half hour wait, which they were not. Additionally, we finished our cocktails well before the entrees arrived, and were never asked if we wanted another, particularly odd with the rest of the table having their sodas frequently refilled. There didn't seem to be a front-of-house manager out on the floor, not that we could notice, nor were we ever approached by anyone that seemed to be a manager. Most of all, and this might be a tad bit nitpicky, our server didn't seem to have any verbal filter, just saying everything that came to mind, often coming across as frustrated or off-kilter.
As a couple, we spent ~$200 with tip.
Overall, it's not that I wouldn't recommend Westside Grill, but for the price point, we expected a slightly higher level of service and food. Something about the entirety of service felt off, perhaps we caught them on a bad night. It feels that there is a lot of potential in Westside Grill, and I hope to revisit soon and edit...
Read moreWhat started as a quick breakfast on the way back from Carmel to San Jose, Westside Grill knocked us out of the park with its beautiful outdoor dining, great service, and fantastic food. Parking is incredibly easy to find since it’s in a commercial area. When we arrived we were seated in the outdoor dining area which is more of a courtyard, in a good way. The interior is very nice as well with TVs, a bar, definitely a much more intimate feel. Either way, the outdoors has umbrellas so you don’t feel too burdened by the heat. We were greeted by our amazing server who was very attentive to us throughout the entire meal, making small talk and just having a great energy. That’s one that stuck out here, the service was incredible and very on top of it. We never lifted a finger or worried about a thing, it was all taken care of before a thought could occur.
Onto the food, we ordered the buttermilk pancakes with a side of bacon, the breakfast burrito, and some coffee. Coffee is always pretty much whatever you make for yourself so nothing special there. What was special was the size of the food we got. In California we are so used to shrinkflation but the burrito was the size of a human head, it was incredible. On top of that the cost of the food was good, the value was apparent. Some places make big portions but lose their quality in the process, not here. The pancakes were light and fluffy, just delicious. The bacon was crispy, not overcooked; floppy, not soggy. The breakfast burrito was out of this world. At first we had to come up with a plan of attack on how we wanted to approach this monster but after the first bite it was so damn good we threw the plan out the window. The hash brown that came with the burrito? Also great, salty and crunchy, but again not over or under cooked.
By the end of the meal we were shocked. Between the beautiful outdoor dining area, the food, the service, price, everything; this was such a wonderful surprise that really caught us off guard. Unfortunately for us, this is in Gilmore, not anywhere near us. However, it was largely unanimous amongst our group that if this place was anywhere closer or if we lived in Gilmore, we would be here without fail every single weekend. Unbelievable food, unbelievable value. Please do yourself a favor and come out to Westside Grill, you...
Read moreI was heading from Gilroy to Morgan Hill to go to lunch but and acquaintance of mine told me about Westside Grill, “sozz” I decided to check em out. Immediately after you walk through the doors there is a reception area “they seat you” In front of that is a dining area and to the right is a full bar with seating “separated from Dining area via a wall with glass” The waitress and servers were super attentive and friendly. After being seated at a booth I noted a bad smell “ like urine in a bathroom, you all know that unmistakable smell” I was honestly thinking to myself, what have I gotten my self into? But after about 10 min I noticed the smell had went away?!! Weird. They use paper straws only upon requesting a straw. “ sorry all you environmentalist but I cannot stand paper straws, guess next time I’ll bring my PLASTIC straw” I asked the hostess what she recommended? she said the salmon fish tacos. When the Salmon fish tacos arrived, I was taking a back by the size and the amount of food given. They certainly do not skimp when presenting you with a meal. The waitress also asked if I would like a side of their homemade salsa? I said sure, let me tell you folks that was the best decision I made all day, their salsa is absolutely amazing.....,well maybe the second best decision I made all day because the Salmon fish tacos were also super delicious and amazing, with slaw, avocado, a slightly smoky bean dipping sauce, and perfectly cooked blackened Salmon, this dish hit all my yummy buttons and begged me to come back for more. Overall I think 4 stars is well earned and I most certainly will be...
