My husband and I had a fairly weird dinner here last night. Based on the pricing and self description of the establishment we took it to be “fine dining.” The service was strangely amateurish as if people who have never been to a fine dining establishment are trying to imitate what they imagine that might be. The drinks were inconsistent, the wild boar “bacon” was meh, but our dinners were good. Perhaps not as good as one might have hoped for the price.
It was hard to get wait staff to take dirtied silverware and they definitely never heard of crumbing the table. Desserts were sweet but flavorless really, if they made them in house I would be surprised. Nothing exciting there. (I will say the shrimp and scallops were absolutely lovely).
The really strange occurrences took place at another table where the wait staff took someone’s order and then when the kitchen didn’t have what was ordered just picked something else and brought it out without asking the customer if they wanted something different. When the customer was visibly confused as to why this would be so and made it clear they wanted something else, the waiter insisted that the customer try the substitution because it was “so good” and then multiple staff stood there waiting for the customer to eat the food. It was excruciatingly awkward.
The customer insisted on getting something else but even asked “is this what dinner here is going to be like?!” And the staff still didn’t understand what had gone wrong and was completely unapologetic/oblivious that they had made a mis-step.
I gave it three stars out of five because of the food and...
Read moreWe celebrated my own Chubby Hubby's milestone 50th birthday last night at Chubby's Steakhouse in Gloucester City, and WOW, I can not say enough about the food and service! We had a semi private table, which was perfect for spreading out and relaxing as you would at home. Our party of five made diverse selections, and because of that, I feel we were able to sample a large cross section of the menu. Our appetizers were conservative in size, but not in flavor, and we were all doing our best to be polite and not reach for the last of anything! I could have left right after the Bang Bang Shrimp and Prime Rib egg rolls and considered myself lucky, but thankfully, the rest of the meal was just as satisfying. Surf, turf, or sky. Fur, feathers, or fins. You name it - we ate it! It was a culinary feast for our senses; as not only was each dish layered with flavor, but they were plated beautifully as well. I brought a carrot cake of our own, which they stored for us until the end of our meal. They brought us plates, utensils, and candles for no extra fee, which was a nice surprise. They had a gentleman playing acoustic guitar and singing during dinner, which we all enjoyed. Our waitress happily volunteered to take several photographs of us as well, adding to the celebratory vibe of the evening. We look forward to including Chubby's to our family's rotation of special occasion restaurants and also taking advantage of their midweek specials. Specifically, their Tuesday evening $99 prix fixe...
Read moreSo I'd like to keep this short but I can't. Someone recommended this place to me and since the someone is real good peeps, I'm like "let's go". The place didn't disappoint in any regard. Once you get over the fact that you actually might not get robbed or racially judged in the street (not making it up, the town has a long history of racial disparity with a lot what the country is facing), once you set your foot inside tou will be treated very well, will eat amazing food, great drinks and even though it's not cheap, you go here knowing you don't want cheap. John (our server) was professional, (not as corny and goofy as i was when I waited tables). Now to the important part: shrimp was 1 of the best I've ever had. Many people do bang bang over breaded and kinda junky. This was quite opposite. Plump and juicy, grill charred, bit sweet bit spicy. 100% perfect. Crunchy, and just mic drop. Caesar salad dressing was my ratatouille moment. 15 years ago I've had dressing this good. In house made pays off. Steak was perfect, so was chicken marsalla. Great mash potato (even tho I prefer chunky mash with skins in it) this one was still nice and garlicky. Asparagus was perfect. Now: I'm huge on tiramisu ever since the days of Ritz 16 theater in Voorhees where I've watched many movies for 20 years. This tiramisu at chubbys was better, bigger, "moister". After a shot of espresso finished me off, I insisted that right before sixers game at 10 pm I had to write a positive...
