Celebrated my birthday 2 days ago, my husband brought me to this restaurant for lunch treat. As I was from Malaysia, I particularly know about Indian foods and I myself is a picky eater but I would like to say the food here is Wowmazing!!
I like it how they prepared each menu individually according to your spicy level and everything tasted delicious. We ordered Garlic Naan, Vada, Masala Tea, Plain Pratha (forgot to take picture as too late to realized that it was already in our tummy) and Goat Biryani.
The Masala Tea came in plain so that you can add-on the sugar on your own according to your preference but I like that the spice & herbs does not overpowered the tea.
The Naan here is made thin and not like the regular thick as you expected or may experience in other places. The texture is crispy and tender. The Vada served you hot and steamy as they fried it upon your order and not letting it sit on the counter (which that's what I know back in my country).
Lamb & goat is not a thang in America, so I think only you may get to taste this cuisine in Indian or Mediterranean restaurant here. And I would said they cooked the perfect goat/lamb here as this meat could be very tricky if the cook do not know how to remove the "musky & goaty" smell, you will not find that kind of smell here. We are pleased with the bryani, we ordered the medium level of spicy (for my American husband tolerance 😅) just thought that a little bit salty in our taste bud, probably that's why they provide you the lemon and yogurt to balance it out. We preferred to eat it as it is.
Plain Pratha came in plain with no dipping. Back in my country, our Pratha came with Dhal, Sambal and fish curry as your dipping in an all-in-one stainless steel plate. Maybe Sri-Lankan food is different from the Indian community in Malaysia. Pratha texture is crispy and tender and the same time, we have no problem to eat it plain w/o dipping and put some sugar on it (which that's what we were taught when we were kids lol 😂)
Overall we were very satisfied with the good food and price was reasonable. Friendly and courteous customer service. There is also weekend buffet on Saturday cost @$15/pax. We will definitely come back again to taste on other menus and the buffet. If you are looking for Indian food, at MITHU is highly...
Read moreFirst time trying this restaurant. We arrived midafternoon on Sunday during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Three tables were occupied so we were seated quickly. Two young men were serving the room. Service was adequate as was the atmosphere. Food was quite good. We are very familiar with Indian food from a variety of regions and were pleased with the lamb korma, veg korma, dal fry (excellent), samosa, and garlic naan. Actually, the naan was lovely. Some things were disappointing as the ice machine was not working and there were some unavailable items. The kitchen was loud with frequent episodes of yelling that sounded angry. Once someone broke into song. Not sure if they knew how much this resonated in the dining area as it was hard to ignore. Several diners exchanges uncomfortable glances. Our young server brought our food to another table but we noticed and redirected him. Payment is made at the counter. While I was paying the two young men at the counter, an older man came from the kitchen to stand between them and angrily struck one young man, who threw an arm up to defend his face. As I walked away, the older man began screaming at the younger person in full view of all customers. It was distressing to witness and very unprofessional. This ruined our experience as we were concerned for the server and appalled at such behavior. Before writing this review, I perused previous reviews to discover numerous hostile responses from the owner to poor online reviews. Being defensive and arguing back online is a poor strategy for marketing and customer service. So is verbal and physical abuse to staff. **Follow up: the response to my post, though now apparently deleted, helped. I do extend my condolences for the loss of a coworker. I'm glad to know some things will be addressed as, other than that, we enjoyed the visit as the food...
Read moreOMG, you have got to try this restaurant! It's a hidden gem that we stumbled upon during our trip to Holland. We were a group of 7 ladies from Chicago who were craving some authentic Indian food and this Sri Lankan plus Indian restaurant totally hit the spot. Even though it didn't look fancy from the outside, there were so many people inside that we just had to give it a shot.
The staff was super nice and got us seated in no time. We ordered a bunch of stuff - chicken biryani, chicken kotthu, fish curry with yellow rice, masala dosa, and tea. Let me tell you, we were all big time foodies and food critics , and this clearly checked all boxes ! One of the best we have tried here in the US for a long time.
The food was so good that we wanted to go back the next day and try their buffet as well, but we just didn't have the time. We were so impressed that I even called the owner, Mithu, personally to thank him for the amazing food and asked him to consider opening a restaurant in Chicago.
We don't have a single Sri Lankan restaurant here and we're really missing out. I suggested that he should even consider setting up a pop-up restaurant or food truck so that we could try his food again without having to travel all the way to Grand Rapids /Holland in MI. Fingers crossed that he takes our suggestion seriously and brings his delicious food to Chicago soon!
Seriously people - this restaurant is a MUST try if you live in the area or are just visiting - you will NOT be disappointed and of course , no doubt - those 5 star reviews on google and yelp are all genuine ones just like mine!! Give this place a try ASAP if you are an...
