Walked in to this cool little bar on a Monday evening with my wife. The place was had some great posters, nice look, good beer on tap. I was excited to try one of their burgers and a beer. There was a band setting up in the corner but no music playing. There were 2 patrons at the bar, 2 what i assume was staff behind the bar, other then that the place was empty. We didn't get greeted so we sat ourselves at a booth and talked a while. Over the course of our stay a couple more patrons walked in and got a beer at the bar.
Ive been to a lot of bars, biker bars, gay bars, grunge bars, some very rough looking places. I don't think I have ever felt so shunned. One bartender walked in back while we were there and never came back out, the other seemed not even to want to look in our general direction as she looked board and uninterested in anything, never coming out from behind the bar. After 30 minutes without a beer, word, or even glance from the staff we left. On the way out i checked the hours of operation thinking perhaps we got there before they opened. They had been open for...
Read moreMy wife and I along with our friends, decided to come down to watch Desmond Jones play tonight. Just for context, we got married yesterday 8-18-17. So this was our first night out with friends as a married couple. We arrived at midnight. Myself and a buddy went in while the girls finished smoking. While we took our shot at the bar we looked over and our friend was being denied entrance. Very calmly and slowly I walked over to ask the door girl what was wrong. The girl had shaved sides of her head with star tattoos. All I asked was "hey if she can show her nurse ID and birth certificate, will you let our friend in." The staff members response was, "you all need to get the F**k out of here." Absolutely out of no where. Started our entire night out on the wrong foot for no reason. I hope this staff member is dealt with accordingly. I've never felt more disrespected at an establishment in Grand Rapids in my life. Will be letting everyone I know that Tip Top should not be their first choice for a fun evening....
Read moreFun dive bar! We saw Albert Lee and his current band on a Wednesday night and the place was packed! It is very small and understaffed, but the waitresses are very nice and efficient, given the situation. The drinks were cold and cheap (west side prices!), and the food looked good. The sound system is decent, and the show was never too loud. The only downside for the night was 1) people who kept talking loudly when Albert was talking to the crowd (he is 81 and very mild mannered) and during ballads-it was extremely rude of the two or three booths to keep this up all night 2) you must understand in a place like this that you will have people standing during shows (seats are limited). I had two women squawking in my ear that they couldn't see and I tried to explain to them that's what happens at a concert in a small place. Good grief, there are two giant pillars in the middle of the place as well, get over it! Other than that, it was...
