A friend and I were looking for a place to have a couple drinks and some conversation so we decided to try this place out since the ratings were pretty high.
This was our first time there and it was a Wednesday evening at 9:30PM when we had arrived, which is still a very reasonable time to go to a wine bar and get a drink especially considering that they close at midnight.
We liked the overall vibe of the place as it was very mellow and relaxed. The place was about 75% full and all of the patrons there seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Upon entering, there was no one there at the front to greet or sit us. We figured that the host must have been seating someone else or busy in the back. So we stood there for at least 5 minutes awkwardly looking around and waiting for someone who worked there to acknowledge us or at the very least say "hi". Disappointingly, no one ever did even though there were staff behind the bar who made eye contact with us, saw us walk in, and stand there.
Being a bit ticked about the lack of customer service at this place, I was about to just turn around and walk out but my friend insisted that we just stick around since we were already there. It wasn't until my friend actually went up to the bartender, told her that we've been standing there waiting for someone to greet us, and would like to see a drink menu that we got any sort of communication going. The bartender was not apologetic at all and gave us the vibe that she was a little bothered by us being there. She gave us the menu but still for some reason didn't offer us a place to sit. So, we picked a drink that we liked and just informed the bartender that we'll be sitting at the bar stools outside.
The drinks were brought out to us and overall very tasty! Still feeling a bit taken aback about how we were treated, we planned to head out after our first drink. As we were on our last sips we had been assigned to a new server. He was the saving grace for our first ever experience at 1618, being that he was the total opposite of the bartender, in a good way.
Though the guy was young, he was very attentive, courteous and personable throughout the evening so we decided to stick around for another drink and some truffle fries. We really appreciated him taking good care of us. If it weren't for his great customer service I would probably never consider going back to this...
Read moreVisiting a friend in the area, she recommend we try out this place and I have to say, they rather blew my skirt up. Our server, Leeanna, was topnotch in taking care of us all night and you can tell everyone here works as a team with even the GM taking some of our drink orders. The list of Ours (appetizers) is a stoners dream come true with a wide range of items to choose from. Between the three of us, we shared five of them and with a tasting of desserts, we left full and happy. The French fries were out of this world good. Please for the love of god, never stop serving them. The jerk wings were another five star dish. Meaty and crispy with the perfect amount of spice. Loved the wonton chips for the seafood nachos and the seafood itself was good quality and cooked well. The Korean meatballs were a nice change of pace. I liked the mixed of Asian and southern items together. The only dish that fell short of amazing was the lamb lollipops. Cooked beautifully with a great quality of meat but the flavor was a little lack luster. Desserts were another home run and loved that you can get a tasting of all five. Genius! We finished our meals with an espresso and a couple of lattes and having just returned from Italy I can say that Midtown does a lovely cup. The only thing that was a miss the whole night was our drinks from the bar. I am going to throw myself under the bus and omit that I am a cocktail snob. When they are good, they are good and these sadly were just ok. Living in the Durham/Raleigh area, we are lucky to have a long list of great cocktail joints and Midtown just did not live up to our norm. We tried four different ones, all of which sounded amazing but fell flat in complexity. I tip my hat to all the staff at 1618 Midtown, you folks are killing it! We plan to visit my girlfriend soon just to...
Read moreSo my sister and I decided to grab a bite to eat after earlier plans and we came across this magnificent place. It was our first time here and we were glad we chose this restaurant. The atmosphere was a cool chill vibe, a little music and dimmed lights. Such a nice setting, we were greeted by Michael who took care of us the whole night and he provided excellent service. He was very patient with us upon ordering and he guided us through the food and drink menu. For starters we had drinks, I had the Participating Trophy which was sweet and tasted like apple pie with an appletini twist, simply delicious and my sister had a couple of glasses of Processo. We didn't arrive until about 10 pm and they close at 12 am so they have a late night menu. Simple and easy going, we ordered the fried chicken and when Michael described how they are chicken thighs cut off the bone and deep fried in buttermilk, we had to try. It was like no other chicken I've had during late night dining, so crunchy, juicy and tender. Served with a creamy ranch and hot buffalo sauce, it really had a kick to it! I also ordered the fried rice minus the mushrooms which was steaming hot and fresh, the asparagus mixed with sweet chili gave a nice balance to my palate with the crunch and sweetness but not too sweet. It was better than I had imagined. My sister oreded the Totchos which has jalapeño peppers with chicken and I think a smoked cheese, whatever it was it tasted so good! So my menu had a slight error, they just changed out the Fish Sando for the Totchos which is new, glad my sister had the correct menu and Michael quickly fixed it. It was a nice crowd when we got there but not overly crowded. The bartender was lively and the staff was very friendlyI love this place and see it in my future for...
