I used to be a professional food critic, so let me give you the pros and cons of this place and the beef fajitas that I ordered to see if you want to eat here. Almost every Greenville local I've talked to says either Mariachis or El Fenix is the best in town, so let's compare Don Toro with those. Firstly, the pros. The flour tortillas here are MUCH better here than both of these spots. They're a little more doughy and have a pleasant bread chew that makes them taste way more fresh versus a spot that gets their tortillas from a distributor. The chips are the same, so I'm betting they make everything in the back. The red and green salsas are very standard, although I'll say the green salsa is very thick, which I enjoyed. However, there's one thing that keeps me from giving Don Toro five stars. The beef fajitas were different than your standard Tex-Mex spot. At Mariachis for example, the fajitas come out with a nice char, yet are still somehow tender. That's a very standard Tex-Mex flavor. But at Don Toro, I felt like I was eating thick cuts of sirloin steak that were still flavorful, but almost tough. I had to chew the beef like a cheaper cut of steak. It wasn't bad. It was just...different. I think they plop down an actual sirloin in the back and cook it like a normal steak, then cut it in thick strips and serve it. I had to cut the strips in half to eat them properly in a tortilla. So if you're a steak person, Don Toro's beef fajitas are perfect for you. But I found myself missing the thinner charred cuts that are more standard with a Tex-Mex restaurant. Overall though, the tortillas at this place are so incredible, that I would rate this better than El Fenix, but not quite as good as Mariachis. Keep that in mind if you're coming for...
Read moreThe food was good. I had a plate with steak and chicken on a small grill hot plate. The steak was cooked medium rare, which I guess I should have specified how I wanted it cooked. I thought the meat was cut into strips. My mistake. The waitress did not seem too helpful. I asked if I could get jalapeños sliced and grilled with the onions and mushrooms, but she said that wasn’t possible. I could only have it whole. I asked for green and red salsas, which have been given to us in the past in salsa bottles, but she said they didn’t have any. She asked if I wanted the salsa that came with tacos. I said, “Yes, please.” She told me it came with the tacos in a small container. I had to tell her that I’ve had their red and green salsa before. She returned later with green salsa and said she found some. When I asked for some red salsa, she seemed bothered. After we finished, she didn’t clear any plates but seemed busy visiting at the bar and applying makeup. I made eye contact to hopefully egg out check and some plates cleared, but she continued to visit with the other staff members and did not return to us for a long while. Nonetheless, the other waitstaff seemed attentive to...
Read moreIf I could give 10 stars I would. Great service, attentive service as soon as I sat at the bar. Yes, they also have a full service bar which they don’t advertise! I ordered the 4 taco street tacos which you can mix and match with different choices of taco meat. I have been to over 10 taco spots in Greenville and these street tacos were the best. I had the chorizo, chicken and asada tacos and they were amazing. They brought out their spicy salsas and they were very very spicy! As I began to break a sweat and tear up from the spicy salsa that engulfed my taco I was filled with joy because I finally found a restaurant with real hot spicy salsa! The tortillas were perfect the meats were perfectly seasoned and the food was brought out piping hot. The rice and beans were perfect as well. If you’re not ordering tacos at a Mexican restaurant you can’t judge the entire menu. These tacos were strong. The only other thing to top it off would’ve been some grilled onions and a grilled jalapeño pepper. I had no complaints and their Modelo on draft was ice cold. 10/10 everything was perfect. My favorite...
