My wife and I traveled to Greenville for a wedding. As we always do when traveling, we interact with the locals. We are always searching for the hidden gems, the locally owned restaurants. The strong majority all told us to go to the Ashen Rose. After checking out the Google reviews, the yelp reviews, this definitely seemed like our kind of place. Being a chef, the Ashen Rose looked like a place we could really get excited about. Let me start by saying that the food was absolutely amazing! We started with the triple sampler. Steak bites, bourbon molasses wings and beer battered onion rings. All next level Pub grub. Really great food. For our main course I ordered half Chicken Parm sandwich and she the fried bologna deluxe sandwich with fries. Also absolutely brilliant food. It tasted like small town Texas, as it should. We were terribly disappointed in the service. There were less than 30 patrons in the entire restaurant. It took nearly 45 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. While we were enjoying our delicious appetizer the restaurant had pretty much cleard out and we were a pair of just a few remaining customers. When we were finally able to order our main courses, it took nearly 20 minutes for those to arrive. So over an hour wait time for service alone. The real kicker is, during all this time. Our drink's were only refilled one time. To sum it up, I'll leave you with this. It breaks my heart when when the kitchen staff takes pride and puts its heart and soul in really incredible food, and the entire experience is killed by a really bad...

It isn't gourmet, but it is always great.

My wife and I "discovered" The Ashen Rose about a year ago and have been back nearly monthly since. We live about 35 minutes away, but it is always worth the trip. When family comes in to visit we always try to squeeze in a trip.

The worst food and service we had there was during a bike race they had a few weeks back. Had we known in advance that there was an event that day, we wouldn't have gone. That being said, the service was still satisfactory and the food was still good! We just love the place.

My wife loves the "Deluxe Fried Bologna" sandwich. So much so that she has me try to duplicate it at home on occasion. The Cobb salad doesn't disappoint, but my favorite is the Fuji Apple Spinach salad. On cheat days I like the fish and chips. The fish is cod; they don't try to sneak catfish or tilapia in on you like many places these day that don't define "fish." The burgers and cheesesteak are a coin-toss selection where you'll come out a winner either way.

For a small-town bar, the draught beer selection is impressive. The choices have ranged from an interesting mix during supply-chain issues to downright great most of the time.

My teenage son likes to go there on Saturday outings with dad to play shuffleboard and pool and eat the pepper jack cheese squares and...

There is no doubt the pub-style food here is really good. Each menu item taken individually is great, but some are not the best ever. For example, the fried pickles are quite good, but not the 5 star fried pickles at Norma's Cafe in Frisco. On the other hand, the steak bites are nothing but exceptional.

The burgers are made from something other than your typical grocery store ground beef, yet no one there could tell me what it actually was. No matter what, still scrumptious. The sweet tea is really sweet! The desserts are great.

I took my wife, my mom-in-law and my two tweens there to prove that you can go to a pub without any need for alcohol, and it worked out nicely.

I would have happily rated 5 stars except that even on a Friday evening between 6:30 to 7:30, it just seemed so... listless. While everyone was friendly, there was a sort of ennui that took the ambiance down.

As others have said, the structure does have very poor acoustics. Also, it's not really "party greater than four" friendly for a sit down meal, unless you do what I did - push the cramped bar tables aside and make room, adding bar stools to one table.

The food is almost 5 star, but the venue and atmosphere are less than 4, so an average of 4 stars. I do recommend that you try this place. Depending on what your situation is, you will...

Worst Burger Ever: Started off with far less than friendly service...bartenders (3), first hint. Then there was no wait staff on a Saturday at 6:30 pm, second hint. Only one other table was eating (4)...rest just drinking (10)...third hint. Would have ran at this point but it was a birthday party for a friend and as a dinner party of 10 (5 couples 40's & 50's) we were stuck. So 10 paying customer buying dinner and drinks=score $$$, right? No, we were treated as unwelcomed outsiders. Tap beer was okay until they ran out with no replacement keg so they could sell by the bottle. Then I ordered the Ashen Rose burger with double chicken fried bacon and jalapenos. I don't know what to say. It took an hour to get our food and I think my burger was on the grill the entire hour (photo). I have never eaten a worse burger. But wait. The guest of honor and the two other people that ordered the beer-battered fish-n-chips got a horrible meal as well berated by the aggressive cook (lady) that it was because she "...used stout beer so it's not burnt, just dark...(background of photo)" ...but that didn't explain the burnt taste and inconsistent cook of the fish from (raw to mush to alright to dry to jerky). This means it was fried frozen. Will never be back to this or any old town Greenville establishments.

I forgot to take food photos! I ordered chicken fried bacon and a fried bologna sandwich. Two, for me, choices if things I'd normally not eat. But. They were both likely insalubrious, I at least did not eat all of it. 😁 It was actually enough for two people and for a minimal price. This restaurant is pub style with a main dining area with 10-12 different sized tables and seating at the bar. A separate room contains a pool table which I could see from the entrance but I didn't enter. In cooler weather, there is outside seating. Location is in the heart of downtown historic Greenville. Even from outside the old building scent is unmistakable. The restaurant is clean and the service is really good. The server was attentive without being pesty. I didn't use the facilities so can't comment. There is a very decent selection of draft beers and I wish I'd had time to try the pecan porter! The salads sound amazing. Parking is angled facing in on a one way street. There are other businesses to browse. I hope to return.

Where do I begin. They don’t like outsiders at all. The food is terrible. Burnt burgers. The two servers are unfriendly and do the bare minimum. We sat at a dirty table because they are all dirty! The waitress wiped it off with a napkin. She will hardly acknowledge us. Seriously look people in the eyes when you speak to them, it’s respectful ladies. We haven’t been checked on, I still haven’t received silverware so my husband found me a plastic fork. As we sit here waiting for the bill, the two girls are at the bar laughing with their regular customers. You don’t want us to be here, you got it. We will never be back. ZERO stars.
