Dress Up and Play Menu Roulette—A Mixed Experience Leaving Me Let Down Fork and Plough has all the makings of a five-star restaurant with a beautiful interior and rotating menu, but my first visit didn’t quite meet those expectations. That said, I’m optimistic that my next experience will be different, and I do believe there’s potential here. Let’s start with the service, which admittedly got off to a rocky start. Our request to switch tables was met with a less-than-welcoming response from the hostess, which set an unfortunate tone for the rest of the night. Audible sighs and eye rolling. Despite this, we tried to focus on the meal, which had its ups and downs. We began with the Crispy Fried Shrimp, a dish with lovely components like arugula, Parmesan, and lemon, though the shrimp alone didn’t shine as much as I’d hoped. We needed to include all the garnish with each bite for a pleasing taste. The lemon was too firm to use, which made it feel like more effort than reward. For the mains, I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, which had a spicy kick but felt overly busy with competing flavors. The onion rings, however, were excellent. My wife had the Shiitake Swiss Burger, but the experience was marred by soggy, flavorless fries. She ended up preferring bites from my plate over her own. We decided to end the meal with the highly recommended Rose Angel Food Cake, hoping for a redeeming finish, but I am sad to say it did not. However, there’s a bright spot that leaves me hopeful. On a separate occasion, we received a chicken pot pie from Fork and Plough as a gift, and it was exceptional—comfort food at its finest, the kind that evokes memories of a grandmother’s homemade cooking. It was exactly what I’d hoped for during my first visit and what everyone said it would be. Because of that pot pie, I’m willing to give Fork and Plough another chance. While my initial experience wasn’t stellar, I’m confident there’s a lot of promise here. Maybe I just hit an off day or should have chose a more premium meal option. I’ll be back to see if their menu can truly live up to its potential.

Where as all people know how to eat, it is said that only the French know how to dine. This notion, conviction if you will, I find fallacious when it comes to Fork and Plough. Place your order in the hands of this restaurant and you are safe. You may repose in peace throughout your entire duration while waiting with your guests. No Greenvillian - no marquis of the ancienne nobless - was ever better served or waited on in greater grandeur. The lights will be brilliant, the waiters will be curled and perfumed and masked (if still need be). The dishes will be strictly regle and the wines will come with the precision of clockwork that has been duly wound up. This evening I had the pleasure, along with the company of my loving wife, to recline at Fork and Plough once again. Alas, tonight I ordered the Swiss shiitake mushroom burger - a familiar yet faithful dish that consistently delights and insights the dancing of the taste buds. To my chagrin, the bun tasted as if a corpse, already liquid with decay, had risen from the grave, drizzled aoli on itself and attempted platation - the result could not have been more appalling. Due to the highest quality of minced beef and other ingredients accompanying the dreadful bun, I thoroughly enjoyed my burger nonetheless. Additionally, the staffs prompt response, care and handling of the situation was of the swiftest nature and upmost nobility. Herbert Bayard Swope once said, “I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.” Were I to have discourse with Herbert, it would seem my credence is in opposition to the sane all in owing to the fact that Fork and Plough manages to do so. Some day, a real rain will come and wash all the restaurant monotony of formulaic Greenville down the pipes. Until then, Fork and Plough stands as one of the few puffy, inky rain clouds blessing our city with its dew. 5 stars.

I visited fork and plough for the third time tonight and yet again, it did not disappoint! I love that their menu changes every night with what is fresh and what the chef is inspired to make. For people who always want to get the same thing when they go to a restaurant, this may not be your place. For me, it's perfect. Tonight, I had a red curry coconut chicken soup, and seared sea scallops with a corn relish, baby greens and a spicy "New Orleans" barbecue sauce. The soup had a lovely balance of flavor. Just enough curry and lemongrass, and shredded chicken and scallions. The scallops were cooked perfectly! Soft and velvety inside, nothing chewy in sight! If I didn't like spicy food, I might have been surprised by the amount of spice in the dish. I wouldn't have assumed spicy just by the name of the sauce. But I do like things a bit spicy, and it want overpowering, just perfect. The woman beside me had a decadent looking brownie dessert that I wished I had time to stay and try! I'm not in Greenville that often, and now when I am, I'm having a hard time thinking of eating anywhere else. Update 9/27/2020:. Have been watching the posts on Instagram from Fork & Plough as they have taken smart steps to reopen during the pandemic. The pictures looked so good I had to make a trip down for dinner last night. It did not disappoint, in either the safety measures they were taking, or the quality of the food. We had a beef carpaccio and a brisket and beer cheese soup to start, and then lamb 'lollipops' and crab cakes (both medium sized plates) as our mains. Everything was delicious. Desserts were wonderful too. Chocolate espresso creme brulee was not too heavy, and paired with fresh blueberries on top. Rice pudding with muscadine sorbet was texturally fun, and delicious. I wish I lived across the street so I could try something new every day!

This was our first time here. We heard mixed reviews about the place but definitely wanted to have our own experience. This was restaurant week and thought it would be a good time to go. For a Monday it was quite busy, I was surprised how casual it was, as I had the impression based on looking at the menu and pricing it would be a tad more upscale. Our server was pleasant but seemed as if she was one table away from being overwhelmed. Throughout the meal she never checked back in unless she was bringing something to the table and needed to be reminded of a Diet Coke, but never refilled it. I thought they would have a restaurant week menu and a normal menu but they did not. Which was fine. We were a party of 5 and we all got something a little different and tasted each other’s food. The portions were very generous. Pork Belly was good, but the sauce/pimento cheese it was in was odd. Fried green tomatoes were tasteless. Salads were big enough to share. Brussels were slightly blackened, which I like but no seasoning. The sauce that was accompanying it felt like an afterthought and wasn’t even enough to really taste. Catfish and grits dish, was super fishy. The Marsala was so drowned in a thick gravy it’s hard to say what was going on and if the dry chicken had any other flavor then gravy. Short rib was cooked to perfection. Sliced bread was the best thing on the menu; no kidding it was delicious. Torte was also scrumptious! Saved the best part for last….the mushroom Swiss burger. Ok, comes out and first there are no mushrooms on the burger. Second when I took the bun off the top and tried to cut it in half, I was instantly flooded with childhood memories of my dad at a charcoal grill overcooking burgers until they were at Hockey puck stage. This one was on a fancier bun. As I told the waitress she said give her a moment. Went and took someone else’s order, came and got my plate and as the rest of my party ate waited 15 minutes until a new burger arrived. No manager or anyone came to offer an apology or say anything about it. The new burger had mushrooms and some juices seeping out as I cut it. Unfortunately, the chef must have implemented revenge on this burger as the salt/garlic salt was so Potent that the Sahara desert took form right there in my mouth. Thank goodness there was water on the table but no extra Diet Coke to be seen. Would I try again? I don’t know. Definitely over priced for meals that should be upscale chef ready. I am a self made cook and though I don’t know everything, I do know that Don’t cover meat and items with sauce unless You’re featuring the sauce and not the meat. Scale back and find you Niche seems as if you’ve lost your way. Also I don’t need you to respond and tell me that you’re sorry I didn’t have a...

An Unforgettable Culinary Experience at Fork & Plough!

Last night, I had the pleasure of treating my wife and nephew to an exquisite birthday dinner at Fork & Plough, and the experience was nothing short of phenomenal! After hearing raves about this restaurant from various sources, we decided to see what the buzz was all about, and we were not disappointed.

We arrived half an hour early for our 8 pm reservation on Friday, December 26th, and the restaurant was already buzzing with activity. Despite the full house, we were promptly seated at our appointed time, setting the tone for an evening of culinary delights.

To kick off our dining adventure, we indulged in the French Bread & Rosemary butters – a heavenly combination that left us wanting more. The roasted Brussels sprouts drizzled with aioli sauce were a delightful surprise and set the stage for what turned out to be an extraordinary meal.

The drink selection at Fork & Plough is equally impressive. I opted for the bacon-maple old-fashioned, a unique and delicious choice, while my wife enjoyed a refreshing mimosa. My nephew, who has various allergies, appreciated the self-service water pitchers placed on our table.

The attention to detail truly shone when the staff brought over a delightful surprise – strawberry/creme cheese in small filo pie shells to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was a sweet touch that added to the warmth of the evening.

The diverse menu accommodated all our preferences. My nephew, with his allergies, ordered the shiitake mushroom cheeseburger without shiitake and fries, and he couldn't stop raving about its deliciousness. My wife's tuna tartare had a spicy kick, making each bite a thrilling experience she'd gladly repeat on future visits.

For my main course, I enjoyed the beef tenderloin cooked to a perfect medium-rare, accompanied by scallop potatoes and asparagus. The tenderness of the meat was unparalleled, and I complemented the dish with a cabernet wine (regretfully, I can't recall the brand) that paired seamlessly.

Service at Fork & Plough was exceptional, even with what seemed to be a short-handed staff on a busy evening. The restaurant's commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients was evident, with a variety of offerings from nearby markets or farms.

As a pleasant surprise, our bill totaled only $133, reflecting the incredible value we received for such a superb, fresh, and flavorful meal in downtown Greenville. I highly recommend Fork & Plough to anyone seeking a five-star dining experience. The combination of exceptional food, attentive service, and reasonable prices makes this restaurant a standout gem. I can't wait for my next visit to explore more from their diverse and...

A mediocre experience that serves as an example of when cost is conflated to class. Upon arrival (Friday at fourish, I want to say?), We were informed that there were no tables available, but that we could be seated at the bar. We explained that if it were at all possible, we would gladly wait for a table to open up if that were possible. The manager snidely explained over again that they could accommodate us at the bar. I understand that the job is frustrating, but there's absolutely no reason to condescend to someone making a reasonable request when it's just as much effort to say "all of our tables are booked for the evening". Upon sitting at the bar, it was clear that the overwhelming majority of work for the entire establishment had been heaped onto the shoulders of the young woman helping us at the bar. She was polite, but seemed utterly confused about every aspect of the ordering process. Everyone else who worked there kept their eyes down and seemed annoyed to have to be in the presence of the people at the restaurant; Public service jobs suck, but I also don't want to pay good money at a place where I feel burdensome. The salad my wife ordered was constructed by a person who had only ever had a salad described to them, like a blind jazz musician except for salad construction. The lettuce was chopped into chunks that required being cut before they could be placed into a regular human mouth, the dressing was lackluster, and the overall dish was just underwhelming for something that's so easily knocked out of the park. I had the pork belly banh mi, which was admittedly delicious though a bit dry on the ends, but it was nice to know that the pig was (as told to us by our server) locally raised and butchered there. It came in one long, unbroken piece, which was aesthetically pleasing and the combination of sauces and flavors were good. The fries were bland and uninspired even after dumping a mound of salt and pepper on them, which they pretentiously make you use in equal portions. Overall, not a good experience, and we'd rather spend money somewhere that feels like it wants to participate and contribute in the community, not feign superiority while draining it...
