This was our first time here. We heard mixed reviews about the place but definitely wanted to have our own experience. This was restaurant week and thought it would be a good time to go. For a Monday it was quite busy, I was surprised how casual it was, as I had the impression based on looking at the menu and pricing it would be a tad more upscale. Our server was pleasant but seemed as if she was one table away from being overwhelmed. Throughout the meal she never checked back in unless she was bringing something to the table and needed to be reminded of a Diet Coke, but never refilled it. I thought they would have a restaurant week menu and a normal menu but they did not. Which was fine. We were a party of 5 and we all got something a little different and tasted each other’s food. The portions were very generous. Pork Belly was good, but the sauce/pimento cheese it was in was odd. Fried green tomatoes were tasteless. Salads were big enough to share. Brussels were slightly blackened, which I like but no seasoning. The sauce that was accompanying it felt like an afterthought and wasn’t even enough to really taste. Catfish and grits dish, was super fishy. The Marsala was so drowned in a thick gravy it’s hard to say what was going on and if the dry chicken had any other flavor then gravy. Short rib was cooked to perfection. Sliced bread was the best thing on the menu; no kidding it was delicious. Torte was also scrumptious! Saved the best part for last….the mushroom Swiss burger. Ok, comes out and first there are no mushrooms on the burger. Second when I took the bun off the top and tried to cut it in half, I was instantly flooded with childhood memories of my dad at a charcoal grill overcooking burgers until they were at Hockey puck stage. This one was on a fancier bun. As I told the waitress she said give her a moment. Went and took someone else’s order, came and got my plate and as the rest of my party ate waited 15 minutes until a new burger arrived. No manager or anyone came to offer an apology or say anything about it. The new burger had mushrooms and some juices seeping out as I cut it. Unfortunately, the chef must have implemented revenge on this burger as the salt/garlic salt was so Potent that the Sahara desert took form right there in my mouth. Thank goodness there was water on the table but no extra Diet Coke to be seen. Would I try again? I don’t know. Definitely over priced for meals that should be upscale chef ready. I am a self made cook and though I don’t know everything, I do know that Don’t cover meat and items with sauce unless You’re featuring the sauce and not the meat. Scale back and find you Niche seems as if you’ve lost your way. Also I don’t need you to respond and tell me that you’re sorry I didn’t have a...
Read moreAn Unforgettable Culinary Experience at Fork & Plough!
Last night, I had the pleasure of treating my wife and nephew to an exquisite birthday dinner at Fork & Plough, and the experience was nothing short of phenomenal! After hearing raves about this restaurant from various sources, we decided to see what the buzz was all about, and we were not disappointed.
We arrived half an hour early for our 8 pm reservation on Friday, December 26th, and the restaurant was already buzzing with activity. Despite the full house, we were promptly seated at our appointed time, setting the tone for an evening of culinary delights.
To kick off our dining adventure, we indulged in the French Bread & Rosemary butters – a heavenly combination that left us wanting more. The roasted Brussels sprouts drizzled with aioli sauce were a delightful surprise and set the stage for what turned out to be an extraordinary meal.
The drink selection at Fork & Plough is equally impressive. I opted for the bacon-maple old-fashioned, a unique and delicious choice, while my wife enjoyed a refreshing mimosa. My nephew, who has various allergies, appreciated the self-service water pitchers placed on our table.
The attention to detail truly shone when the staff brought over a delightful surprise – strawberry/creme cheese in small filo pie shells to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was a sweet touch that added to the warmth of the evening.
The diverse menu accommodated all our preferences. My nephew, with his allergies, ordered the shiitake mushroom cheeseburger without shiitake and fries, and he couldn't stop raving about its deliciousness. My wife's tuna tartare had a spicy kick, making each bite a thrilling experience she'd gladly repeat on future visits.
For my main course, I enjoyed the beef tenderloin cooked to a perfect medium-rare, accompanied by scallop potatoes and asparagus. The tenderness of the meat was unparalleled, and I complemented the dish with a cabernet wine (regretfully, I can't recall the brand) that paired seamlessly.
Service at Fork & Plough was exceptional, even with what seemed to be a short-handed staff on a busy evening. The restaurant's commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients was evident, with a variety of offerings from nearby markets or farms.
As a pleasant surprise, our bill totaled only $133, reflecting the incredible value we received for such a superb, fresh, and flavorful meal in downtown Greenville. I highly recommend Fork & Plough to anyone seeking a five-star dining experience. The combination of exceptional food, attentive service, and reasonable prices makes this restaurant a standout gem. I can't wait for my next visit to explore more from their diverse and...
Read moreA mediocre experience that serves as an example of when cost is conflated to class. Upon arrival (Friday at fourish, I want to say?), We were informed that there were no tables available, but that we could be seated at the bar. We explained that if it were at all possible, we would gladly wait for a table to open up if that were possible. The manager snidely explained over again that they could accommodate us at the bar. I understand that the job is frustrating, but there's absolutely no reason to condescend to someone making a reasonable request when it's just as much effort to say "all of our tables are booked for the evening". Upon sitting at the bar, it was clear that the overwhelming majority of work for the entire establishment had been heaped onto the shoulders of the young woman helping us at the bar. She was polite, but seemed utterly confused about every aspect of the ordering process. Everyone else who worked there kept their eyes down and seemed annoyed to have to be in the presence of the people at the restaurant; Public service jobs suck, but I also don't want to pay good money at a place where I feel burdensome. The salad my wife ordered was constructed by a person who had only ever had a salad described to them, like a blind jazz musician except for salad construction. The lettuce was chopped into chunks that required being cut before they could be placed into a regular human mouth, the dressing was lackluster, and the overall dish was just underwhelming for something that's so easily knocked out of the park. I had the pork belly banh mi, which was admittedly delicious though a bit dry on the ends, but it was nice to know that the pig was (as told to us by our server) locally raised and butchered there. It came in one long, unbroken piece, which was aesthetically pleasing and the combination of sauces and flavors were good. The fries were bland and uninspired even after dumping a mound of salt and pepper on them, which they pretentiously make you use in equal portions. Overall, not a good experience, and we'd rather spend money somewhere that feels like it wants to participate and contribute in the community, not feign superiority while draining it...
