When dining here all I can say is Holy Vinegar Batman!! From the coleslaw down to the sauces and obviously the pickles that they put on every plate, the strong vinegar taste and smell ruin the taste of the food. We all ordered something different. My daughter ordered pulled pork with green beans and potato salad and she said that the pork was okay but the green beans tasted bland and the potato salad was pretty much just edible. I ordered a pork sandwich with coleslaw which was a mistake because the vinegar taste from the coleslaw completely overpowered the taste of the pulled pork, which would have been great solo, by the way. As sides, I got macaroni and cheese and a side of coleslaw which was a mistake...Times 2! My wife on the other hand got a combo plate of chicken and pulled pork with coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. She had several issues with her food. The chicken was extremely dry. She was given a plastic fork and knife to cut it up with and she struggled a good bit to cut through it. Then the quality of the chicken itself was pretty bad. It was too small and full of veins and she was constantly picking at it and eventually she just gave up on it because it wasn't worth the upper body strength to keep trying to salvage parts of it. She loved the pulled pork but said that the macaroni and cheese tasted like Velveeta and that isn't a good thing. She gave it a few bites and gave up. The cole slaw was the same way. It looks great but tastes like straight vinegar. Lastly, the bread that they put on the plates has the consistency of a sponge and is really dry. My wife tried it, had to dip it in sauce to get the bite down and left it on the plate. She took pictures of her plate which was just basically barely touched except for the pork that she was able to eat. Finally, I ordered some peach cobbler. That is the worst peach cobbler that I have ever had. It was very dry, like sand dry. It was full of breading and had barely any peaches in it. Each of us tried a bite and we all agreed that it was garbage. We eventually just stopped trying with the food and got up to leave. The woman that was clearing the table looked shocked that we were done eating and even asked if we were finished before she took the plates. None of us wanted to tell her that the food just wasn't good, so we left and decided not to go back. On the way home, my wife told me that her tounge and mouth were sore and she was guessing that it was from all of the vinegar. She liked the pickles on the plate that she got, took those bites of coleslaw and used sauce on her pork so I am guessing that the vinegar was just too much for her. My daughter also mentioned having a stomach ache after eating there, so maybe the vinegar and just okay food that she ate was just too much for her as well. I give this place two stars and that is solely for the pulled pork and the fresh CocaCola in the...
Read moreSo let me start off with all the good and amazing things about my recent Henry's Smokehouse visit. I drove up for lunch and noticed people eating outside at the tables so as soon as I pull into a spot I was greeted by Emily she had her tablet in hand with a smile on her face ready to take my order. I didn't even expect to be served as soon as I pulled up and was caught off guard immediately. I knew I wanted some smoked fall off the bone ribs so I ordered half a rack! I was not disappointed in anyway what so ever about the ribs. My only complaint is it was just to much to eat for lunch and ended up eating to much. I recommend the quarter rack or the kids plate for lunch next time. She offered a meal or she called it the plate deal and I knew I wanted fries. But wasn't sure about any other sides. She listed way more than I could comprehend at the time. So I asked her what the most popular items out of what she just said and she suggested baked beans or mac and cheese. So I went with the mac and cheese. As soon as she took my payment and turned around another friendly face was walking out to my vehicle with my order. So I pulled off but couldn't stand the smell of the amazing food I had just received and knew I wouldn't be able to make it home without opening it up. So I pulled into the next open spot right next to a classic BMW 2002. I'm just guessing it was early 70's model (I drive a 2021 BMW X3). I opened up the box and grabbed a rib and sure enough the bone came up but the meat stayed on the plate I was very impressed. As I was just recently in San Antonio Texas just a few short weeks ago and was wanting some comparable BBQ that I had while I was there. Which if you know anything about Texas BBQ is a very high bar to achieve. I have attached pictures of my meal for your viewing pleasure. While I'm trying to get the meat into my mouth. Jamie who was also taking orders with her tablet in hand and a smile on her face walks up to my window and says oh I see you have already been helped. I laugh because I could barely talk with the food in my mouth. But she asked if there was anything else she could get me or refill my drink. I asked for some additional napkins. She came right back with wet wipes AND napkins! I just couldn't stop eating I demolished the entire half rack with the fries. I was very happy with those items. Now for the down side. First don't try and drive anywhere if you are hungry and get this food to go. I didn't make it out of the parking lot. Second it is just me but I didn't like the ketchup I am a Heinz person for sure and it wasn't even close. The BBQ sauce worked well in its place though. And lastly the mac and cheese just wasn't for me. Not saying it was bad but it wasn't as good as the fries and ribs and I just ordered...
Read moreHearing we wanted to try South Carolina barbecue, my companion's cousin said we should go to Henry's on 240 Wade Hampton Road. We took his advice and went there with our two hosts and friends for lunch.
Customers order and pay first before getting their food which is also common with this venue. With no table seats available, we took four counter stools that looked at the parking lot. It is a casual environment, but most BBQ places are low key. Two gentlemen stood up after a minute and asked if we wanted their table. We said yes and thanked them.
Unfortunately, my phone was having a data overload after taking so many photos since leaving Connecticut's Bradley Airport until this particular afternoon. As a result, most of my pictures of the food and the room that seats maybe thirty once it emptied out are lost. But, I still have a few. {I'm updating this review to include three that are not perfect but informative)
I can tell you what the four of us had to eat and give you my opinion on the food. We chose two-way plate combos which gives patrons a choice of meats (4 oz pork, ½ boneless skinless breast of chicken, or a 1/3 rack of ribs) and two sides, pickles plus a side of Texas toast. Our pulled pork was the best I've had in a long time. It's often reheated or left out too long, dry, flavorless and such an injustice to pork itself which when cooked properly, is none of these things. The ribs were decent. Sauced. Loved their sweet potato casserole side with chopped walnuts or pecans inside, as well as the macaroni and cheese which also gets a thumbs up in terms of flavor and creaminess.
All of us agreed it was good barbecue, so this explains why it was so crowded when we walked in and why it is considered the place to eat BBQ here. I learned some time ago that if you were looking for the real deal, if there wasn't a chimney with smoke coming out of it, it was not true barbecue. Henry's had an active smoking chimney. Also, genuine BBQ houses will commonly run out of items on their menu, which means they've run out and more will be available tomorrow.
No alcohol is served here. Ice tea and soda. There is plenty of outdoor seating - a large clean area on the lawn across the parking lot with picnic tables. Henry's pride themselves for cooking fine meats low and slow for as long as fifteen hours over hickory logs. Good work! Two locations and their food truck does...
