Went from being a favorite of ours to one we likely won't be returning to. The quality of the product has declined significantly the past few times we've been there, and the service is inexcusable at this point.
We used to go for the high quality Nigiri Maguro and Nigiri Hamachi. This past trip, both were about on par with what we'd get at a cheap sushi belt. Previously, we'd brag that the quality was on par with the legit Japanese spots in Portland proper. The quality has been trending downward, and it's becoming apparent that's just how it is now.
Service: It's always seemed to be a one-woman show with the table service. She does make an attempt to get everyone taken care of, but it's so unbelievably inadequate for the capacity of this restaurant. If anything is forgotten or messed up on your order, you're basically screwed as you won't get checked on again for 30min+.
This past trip, all our drinks+appetizers were forgotten. We resigned to the fact and ate our sushi anyways, Once we were basically ready to go, she grabbed our check, saw the forgotten appetizers, then went and rushed together everything and brought it to us. We would have declined them at that point as we didn't want to have to chug an Asahi after our dinner was over. And we definitely weren't interested in eating the sloppy, hastily-prepared appetizers.
It's a bummer we can't enjoy a quality sushi fix closer to home anymore. We'll be heading to Ichidai or another favorite spot further...
Read moreUPDATE...I wrote my first review a year ago...and it looks like somebody took notice. New floors, much cleaner. Things have improved. (What I have been told) I will go and try this place one more time and will revamp my review. I have moved my review from 2 stars to 4 stars and will adjust after my wife and I try this place again. OLD REVIEW....We read the reviews and decided to try. How can you people review this place so highly? Do you not get out? Did you even look at the filthy floor. Dirt in every corner. 1981 Oak Parquet flooring that looks like every crack is filled with years of mopped over grime. Yikes. The Sushi was okay, but I could not get past the slow, and chaotic service and the dirt everywhere. My wife was almost done with her food before mine arrived. Seats are uncomfortable, and the blinds look like they haven't been touched in 10 years. As you walk in, you notice water stained wood planters on the inside of the windows. California roll...small, not rolled tight enough and bland. Rainbow roll...fair. I had the bento dinner and the food was very good on this one. Teriyaki Chicken was great...Tempura was great...but I am sorry people...the filth destroyed this experience. We have eaten at over 25 different Sushi places in Portland...and 4.4 stars...No way...I don't understand how I can see things so...
Read moreI have been going to Meeka for years. It's our #1 choice for sushi east of the river. In fact, we always go there for special events (birthdays, anniversaries, relatives in town) and it's what the kids always ask for as a birthday dinner. We don't go because it's comfortable or cozy (it's not bad, but the hard benches seem to be a common complaint), we don't go because the service is outstanding or super fast. The service is very acceptable for a busy restaurant. The service is not bad, they don't forget stuff, or mess up our order, it's just what I would expect from a busy, non-descript restaurant with just the best sushi I have ever had. My favorite seems to be the Kong roll. Don't get intimidated by the idea of banana in your sushi, just try it first, it's really good! We go to Meeka because the food is just so fresh and so well prepared and the prices are so much better than trendy sushi restaurants. Everyone we have ever turned on to Meeka has reported back the same experience we...
