China Garden Restaurant — Restaurant in Hamden

I ordered from them last night. I thought it was the restaurant across from the Hamden High school. I should have canceled my order immediately.

The shrimp dumplings were delicious. The wings were too.

The egg foo young was inedible. I had to throw the first patty out. I saved the second patty as I was going to return it and ask them that they redo the order.

I spent $57, so I thought that would be an easy ask.

I called today to tell them of my experience; starting with how the food was good except the egg foo young which was burnt.

She said "it is deep fried...so it is dark like that." I told her that I had been eating egg foo young for 40 years and this was burnt. I know what char and carbon tastes like. This was burnt beyond being edible.

"Well, we have been selling it for years and never had a complaint", she said rudely.

I told her "well, I'm telling you that it was burnt and I will bring it back and would like another one."

She made it plain that wouldn't be happening.

I made it plain I would leave this review and that she lost my business forever. Not because the food was burnt. Anyone can make a mistake. She lost my business because of her attitude. For the price of less than $1, she could have made $50+ a week from me.

February 2022. Had menu up on screen. Had a question and called. Woman answered. I asked question. Could not understand her answer. Tried several times. No success. I decided to order. Pork in Garlic Sauce with NOT white rice. Dumpling soup. Pickup. Lunch menu. $16+. 20 minutes. Stopped 30 minutes later. Order ready. Paid. Thought the $ amount for the Lunch Special was too much. Pork/Garlic sauce: container filled 7/8 with, what was white rice, and a few sprigs of broccoli, possibly a few pieces of onion or unknown vegetable, and 2 mini corns and NO garlic flavor at all and tough pork. Soup: had two double size pork dumplings (forgetting what they are called) and 8 ounces of soup. I know, because I poured the soup into a measuring coup. The chicken fried rice is good here. Beyond that everything else is pretty low quality. Orange chicken is about 80% dough balls coated in orange sauce. It taste good at least but i order it for the chicken not the dough. 2nd time my orange chicken order has more than half the order be dough balls with no chicken. The kung pao chicken use to be good now its bland and boring. Kung pao consists of a couple peanuts diced carrots and celery with some sauce and chicken pieces. No chilies, nothing else, which makes it taste boring especially considering they use to make it pretty good. Now its clear they are cutting costs without reflecting it in their pricing.
