Let me begin by saying I do NOT subscribe to the belief that the customer is always right.
Now for my story… I went here with my husband and two brothers for lunch after it was recommended to us by our cousin. I’m pregnant, so I didn’t expect to be able to order much from the menu, but most sushi restaurants I’ve been to before has other entree options besides sushi, as well as at least a few options with of rolls with cooked fish. When we looked at the menu I was pretty disappointed to see that most of the rolls were priced higher than I’m used to (between 15-20$ for 8 pieces of sushi), and the non-sushi entrees were between $20-30 a plate. So, I decided to try to get the spicy seared tuna roll because it was only $7 and when I asked the waitress if it was cooked she said “yes.” Additionally, I told her I wanted to make sure it’s cooked because I’m pregnant and can’t eat uncooked fish. She assured me it was.
Fast forward to our food arriving: I noticed that it was not in fact cooked, and asked if it could be removed from our bill as I could not eat it. I did not know that “seared” only means gently cooked on the outside and raw through the center, which apparently is my fault even though I tried to verify with the waitress that it was in fact fully cooked. The waitress said it could not be removed because it “had already been served to the table,” and suggested I take it up with the manager.
This is when things really spiraled because the manager came out and proceeded to grill me (no pun intended) about why I didn’t already know that seared meant lightly cooked and raw in the middle. To which I responded that I wasn’t sure what it meant and that’s why I tried to make sure by communicating my need for cooked fish to the waitress when I ordered. This manager was ready to continue to argue with me about the issue, and I was probably two hours past having needed to eat something, so when I realized he was going to dig in his heels and continue to berate me for ordering the wrong thing, I said “I am too hungry, so I can’t do this.” Then I got up and walked out of the restaurant and proceeded to walk two blocks while having a complete emotional meltdown from being too hungry and frustrated. I probably wailed out loud for about 10 minutes while my party finished their disappointing sushi (it looked worse than any sushi I’ve ever seen - even from the grocery store!).
In summary: The customer is not always right, but when the customer asks the waitress for verification that something is cooked and then receives food she can’t even eat, take the frickin sushi roll off the bill and move on rather than making a starving pregnant woman cry and leave.
TL;dr HORRIBLE customer service. Nasty, run-down interior. HORRIBLE sushi! RIDICULOUS prices…Someone please save Hamilton from this awful restaurant by opening an actual sushi restaurant with reasonable prices, good food, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Drive these d*kheads out of business.
That is all. Thanks for coming to...
Read moreWe have been eating here for years and have always been huge fans and sang your praise, but....you have gone way down hill since re-opening. You have gotten rid of so much of who you are and what we loved. Right after the fire you opened and
You removed so many items off the menu You stopped doing lunch
We were there last week and you have
Removed all non-sushi items from the menu Removed more of the rolls which had been on the menu.
Our dinner last week was awful. We found out the new changes on the menu and it left our non-sushi eating kids and others in our party with nothing to eat that interested them. We asked if they could still make something off the old kids menu and our waitress said no. Meanwhile, we ran into a friend on the way out who said their waitress said that they could make anything on the old kids menu?! I ordered a roll, which I have been ordering for 4 years now, and asked that it be cut into 8 pieces instead of 6. The waitress responded, "that is already an 8 piece roll". I said, "it says right here on the menu that it's a 6 piece?". She let me know that it was wrong. I didn't want to argue. Two of us in our party ordered the same roll and they both arrived in 6 pieces. We will not be returning. If we can't go to dinner and have everyone in our family have options to them, we will have to cross you off our list.
There is nothing wrong with being an all sushi establishment, but in a small town with only a few eating options you have already set the standard over many years if what we can expect and enjoy from you. You have consistently been cutting away what our...
Read moreSecond Street Sushi used to be my favorite restaurant in Hamilton, sushi was fresh, the Asian inspired food was delicious.
Service has always been on the slower side but I never dine at Second Street when I’m in a rush. So slow is fine as long as the food is right.
I don’t often leave reviews, but this last time I went to dinner with another guest was bizarrely bad. Service was slow, apathetic and indifferent - we were not given drinks, napkins, silverware, chop sticks, ramekins or an extra plate for a shared dinner - without asking for each item, separately, when we could get the waitresses attention.
Sushi was fine, the generals chicken was overly fried, like the chicken was crispy in the breading, over fried. Was strange, as this has always been one of my favorite meals to enjoy when dining at Second Street.
No salad or soup was offered with the dinner order, the waitress never offered a refill on drinks. I am not a needy or incessant customer, I have dealt with the public long enough to know when someone is being unreasonable but the waitress we had was almost willfully ignorant and bad at her job.
The food was not the quality I was used to from eating at Second Street for the last decade, especially with the new pricing.
I’m afraid that this may have been the last time I eat at Second Street, the food and service was that bad to leave an enduring bad taste...
