G's Cheesesteaks is located in the landmark building formerly "Lena's Pizzeria" in the Parkville section of Hartford bordering the West Hartford line. Excited about something new coming into the building when signage went up a couple months ago, we HAD to check it out when we saw the 'open' sign in the window. Good News: traditionally prepared GIANT 18" cheesesteak - American cheese, peppers, onions and mushrooms on the 'G-steak' variant. They offer a southwest version as well as a couple others, served with or without fries and fountain sodas. It's a big, tender cheesesteak grinder that's tasty - prepared with 'special seasoning' during cooking on the flattop - in view view of the seating area. (the SteaknShake adage 'in sight, must be done right' comes to mind) The cheese & veggies are sauted in with the meat before delivering it to the roll. The steaming-hot ribeye sandwich is wrapped in foil loosely if eating in-house or tightly if taking it to go. Bad News: The new interior construction is all hard surfaces - it's quite noisy, especially when several people are there (+kids). No prices are visible on the menu & we were taken a little aback at the $13 price for a hoagie (albeit a good one). Also, any person behind the counter should not have her child sitting on the counter - kinda unsanitary, imo(see photo). Seating is limited to about a half-dozen stools on the periphery by the window and around the grill area - more tables and maybe some fabric would decrease the sound issue. Additionally, the roll was a little tough, and their wasn't any napkin holders so you had to ask for them ....Hey, they just opened, so, i am sure they are still getting their business together; Please don't take these issues as slams. The cook asked us if everything was alright - and it was ok... with small issues. Hopefully in the coming weeks they will have their bread vendor delivering daily. Ultimately, it's a good cheesesteak at about the same price as a burger at a place like plan-b - but it's REALLY good to see something in Sully's...
Read moreSomething new in the neighborhood!!! While Hartford is rife with diverse eating establishments, a great Cheesesteak joint was not among the mix. Until now. With no restaurant background but a huge desire to open one, Mikey G took over the old Lena's Pizza spot on Park St. last summer, and spent almost 9 months cleaning it up & renovating it (as you do...) The result is a crisp, clean, open space, with lots of windows, a good sized parking lot in the rear (super important!!), and a solid menu.
If you're looking for a dainty bite, or some kind of fusion amuse bouche, this is not the place for you. If however you are looking for a LEGIT Sandwich shop that you'll NEVER leave hungry from, then welcome home!
The 2 words to best describe G's, are "Fresh" & "Enthusiastic"!!! ALL the proteins are fresh, NEVER frozen, which makes a HUGE difference in flavor, and Mike's enthusiasm for what he's doing is impossible to miss. The Cheesesteaks, done the classic way, a good 1/2lb of freshly shaved Rib Eye steak, (never any frozen mystery Steak-Umm type stuff), worked on the flattop with some serious spatula chopping skills, are juicy and loaded with flavor, and come any way you want 'em. The same for their wraps. I had the Cheesesteak sandwich (killer!!), and the wife had a Chicken Bacon Ranch wrap, and we both got 2 meals out of our sandwiches. And after eating hers she told me (twice), "This is the best chicken wrap I've ever had", and she really meant it. Do yourself a favor & check G's out. I'm a fan, and absolutely will be back again!! (And...
Read moreI like trying places and I'm glad I gave this place a chance. We got the Southwest Steak Philly, G's Steak, Crab Fries, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. Overall the Southwest Steak Philly was amazing! The Chocolate Chip Cookie 🍪 was amazing! My brother can't stop talking about it. The G's Steak was ok, it was good but missing something. I had it the way it's on the menu, nothing extra or less because I wanted to try it how it was on the menu. The Crab Fries were just crinkle fries with Old Bay. I'm from Maryland so those would be just old bay fries and Crab Fries would have actual crab on them but again I'm from Maryland so it might just be a different thing here. I will say though the G SAUCE... Was what made the G's Steak and the Crab Fries delicious. I got some of the sauce on the side maybe next time I'll ask for it on the G's Steak. They do have an option for the fries to come with the sauce on them but I didn't choose that because again I wanted to try them how they come. Now as far as the service goes it was excellent! I'm really glad I wasn't talked to on the phone with an attitude and I was welcomed with a smile. I didn't sit and eat there because I was exhausted and it was a quick trip to Connecticut but I would definitely sit and eat there another time. Overall I would go back and I would recommend it to anyone who likes giving...
