Oh, how we loved BerryBird coffee! Best coffee on the island right here (and that's saying something because the coffee is generally exceptional). We stopped by BerryBird on our way to the Captain Cook Monument and were greeted by Matt, who is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about coffee in an accessible way. It was fun to hear about the different methods they utilize to make different kind of coffee. We initially had the dirty coffee, which is espresso and half & half topped with Lisa's homemade caramel crumble (she makes it by hand every night, and you can tell! It's outstanding). The caramel crumble melts into the coffee within a minute or so. I usually just take my espresso over ice with a splash of milk, but the dirty coffee converted me. It's sweet, but not too sweet, and the coffee is super smooth with a great depth of flavor. The half & half complements the other ingredients perfectly.
After our time at the Captain Cook Monument, we decided to return for a second coffee, and while they had sold out of the dirty coffee, we decided to try the vanilla bean latte, which was also excellent! They use real vanilla bean grown in Hawaii. We made a special hour-long drive the next day to just get another dirty coffee, and we returned later in the week before the airport as our last stop on the Big Island before returning home. My husband also tried the iced matcha, which is made with hochija (very tasty and worth trying if you like matcha!). We also bought a bag of coffee beans to take home.
Overall, it's clear that Matt and Lisa are passionate about coffee and thoughtful about the drinks that they craft. Everything starts with the quality of the coffee; their menu is simple but executed very well (which is my style). We were more than happy to drive out of our way to frequent their business. If you're interested in the dirty coffee, I would recommend coming early, as they do sell out since the caramel crumble is in limited quantities. But I can't imagine you'd be disappointed by their other options either! I will be recommending BerryBird...

Without question one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. We feel so lucky to have met Matt and Lisa at BerryBird Coffee at the Ali’i Marketplace on Tuesday and we loved the coffee and our new friends so much we came back with the whole family on Thursday! My first visit we had the pour over grown in Hawaii, which was phenomenally smooth and rich. It left me thinking about it for the next two days. On our second trip we had pour overs of both their medium roast and a Columbian bean Matt was kind enough to share from his own personal supply! The family really enjoyed the espresso and vanilla bean latte, with the vanilla beans grown locally as well. Lisa made us a very refreshing cooler with some tea made from coffee pulp and a citrus jelly which was perfect on a warm day. We’ll definitely be back whenever we’re on Big Island! Thank you...

I came for their famous dirty coffee—and damn, it delivered. Ice-cold, bold espresso meets smooth milk in a combo that straight-up slaps. Rich, creamy, and unapologetically strong—this isn’t your average iced coffee, it’s a statement.
Then I leveled up with their vanilla latte made with real vanilla—none of that artificial syrup stuff. The flavor was deep, warm, and subtly sweet, like a hug from someone cooler than you. Every sip felt premium.
My fiancée went for the chai, made with Soul Chai, and she was all about it. Smooth spice, real depth—none of that watery, generic café chai nonsense. It hit that perfect balance between comforting and kickass.
The vibe? Clean, cool, confident, outdoor hut. No fluff, no gimmicks—just seriously good coffee and tea that speaks for itself. The owners are sooooo kind. Loved talking to them and you can tell they love what they do.
