So let me start by saying that this is a Hayward institution and my family is a little biased because more than the food...we love the family who runs this restaurant! The food is very good, but we have been customers pretty much since they opened in 1966 because when we come here we feel like we're visiting family! Started with my in laws and then my husband as a child. My oldest was 5 days old the first time we brought him here and he has chosen this place as his bday dinner every year since then.
The service is always great. We are almost always waited on by Ignacio or Sandy. Ignacio will make great recommendations and herald you with funny stories!
The crunchy tacos are amazing. Carnitas are really good! Lots of meat, very little fat. They are only available on Saturdays though and get there early, because they run out! My youngest loves the huge quesadilla with meat. Hubby likes the three item combo and usually gets the regular burrito, and a crunchy taco...or two! Unless its Saturday, then it's the Carnitas Platter!
The super burritos are ENORMOUS and filled with yummy goodness! Favorites in our family are the chili verde, the shredded beef, the Al Pastor and on Saturday Carnitas.
The salsa is like a hot sauce, not a chunky fresh salsa, and is out of this world! The chips are homemade... light and crunchy and salted just right. Note: the chips and salsa are available for take out and we almost always go home with a bag and a container of each!!
Cash and Credit Cards are accepted. They have bigger booths and can accomadate larger groups...

Our host, Ignacio, told us about the history of the restaurant and the story behind each dish. It was a nice personal touch and we all loved it. The homemade salsa has a delicious smokey flavour and the pork taco was a fan favourite.
We got caught up in the moment and I had a bit of a whoopsy-daisy, leaving without my backpack containing me and my friend's passports, wallets and cameras in the restaurant. We noticed about 20 mins down the road and when we called we were greeted by a relieved Ignacio who, along with some of his regulars, had contacted us via Facebook to tell us we'd left it there. When we returned he even gave us some mini burritos for the journey! And they were bloody delicious.
It was some of the best customer service I'd ever experienced and the food was to match.
All the best to Los Compadres for the future. We...
Read moreDid you know that this restaurant is over 50 years old and have been run by the same family? Great food and great people. Pros: the owners take their time to treat you like family when you first step into the restaurant, they will help you with suggestions if you don't know what to order. The ingredients they use are always fresh, and they make everything on the menu from scratch (from what I heard, amazing). Cons: Not much parking around, the street it faces has a slight incline and is a busy street for vehicles, and the seats in the restaurant aren't very comfortable, because they use fresh ingredients, there are times when they run out an order, or are not making it, and some orders take much longer, as long as 15 mins to make. Definitely go in yourself and get a taste of authentic Hispanic foods made...
