Hernando's Underground Cafe — Restaurant in Hernando

We heard about this place when we were doing a tour around Hernando and Southaven, and we figured we would give it a try. We weren't sure of the atmosphere so we dressed in some nice clothes and prepared for a fun night. Unfortunately, this was a huge mistake. From the moment we stepped into the building we noticed that the air was incredibly thick on the inside of the restaurant. There was little to no ventilation in the entire building, so the entire restaurant was filled with a thick cloud of smoke that burned your eyes and made it difficult to breathe. Not only that by the time you do leave the restaurant it's like you've been working as a fry cook for a full shift, your clothes absolutely stink. We had to throw everything into the wash once again as soon as we go home.

One would think that the food would make up for the lack of airflow in the restaurant, but it's pretty mediocre. Sweet potato fries tasted like frozen ones that you could heat up in a microwave. The servers are nice but for how slow the restaurant was there was no excuse for the lack of service we had. We asked for boxes and we waited a full ten minutes while the server instead checked out other individuals at the counter when more than half the restaurant was empty. Maybe the food's better if you get it to go, but I can't recommend going to this restaurant until they fix their ventilation problem because it completely ruins...

Absolutely amazing experience. First of all , i love the fact that it’s literally underground lol 😂 it gives me bunker /storm shelter vibes. Basic decor makes you feel it’s gonna be a “basic”‘ meal but let me tell you it’s anything but BASIC !!!! this place is thriving with great service and food that will have your taste buds dancing ❤️ I ordered the gumbo which was good , great flavor that wasn’t too spicy but wasn’t too mild and was far from bland .. the only complaint I would have is how big the okra was but that’s not really important unless you hate okra . 🤷🏻‍♀️ my friend got the Philly and literally still praises it lol 😂 I got the shrimp and grits 😳 y’all ….

Let me tell you … this decision was not made lightly bc they had so many amazing choices on their menu ! However , I am soooo glad I did bc it was absolutely delicious !!!🤤 perfect cheesy floavored grits w/ the perfect pairing of Cajun sauce and shrimp .. this dish was great for Leftovers the next day too .. you get a lot for your money and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!! It was my first time dining at this restaurant. It came highly recommended, however. I'm sad to report I had a disappointing experience. Both of the entrées the table ordered were catastrophically prepared. The shrimp and crawfish Étouffée smelled and tasted spoiled( best guess is that it was the crawfish that had turned.) The second plate ordered was a simple southern classic. The country fried chicken is an expected staple on most menus in the south. Personally I am hard pressed to NOT order it whenever I go to a sit down dinner at a new spot. The oil used to fry this was burned prior to or during cooking. I genuinely hope this was an isolated evening and event for this eatery. Unfortunately, I don't believe I will be back. Imagine my dismay when I alerted the staff and chef and was met with what can best be described as a Laissez faire response. We paid for our salads and fountain drinks and were offered little more than a "we sorry it was terrible...
