Bistro 1605 is a result of Alexandria’s Hamilton Street Bistro moving into the former Cork and Grind location. While I never got to try the old restaurant, I was curious about the new. I stopped by a little before noon on a Friday to find the establishment very busy, a testament to Alexandria’s loyal following. As much as I wanted to like this place, however, it just didn’t strike me as anything special. Positives first: Alesha is a friendly and welcoming presence, and the staff here seem hard-working and personable. Though the menu is fairly limited, several items – a crostini and a spinach/hummus/red pepper/quinoa wrap – held appeal. I ultimately went with the day’s special, an Italian sandwich. It took a while to arrive, but given how busy – and new – the bistro was, I’m inclined to cut them some slack. While the sandwich featured a good amount of meat, it was oddly sweet due to the choice of pepper. Banana peppers and a dash of oregano would have been a welcome remedy. Like a few of the other sandwich offerings, the Italian clocked in at $12 with a bag of chips included. Some of the salads reached ambitiously into the teens. I may need to give Bistro 1605 another shot after they are fully up to speed at their new location, but initial impressions suggest a place that will serve you neither a bad lunch (and there is something to be said for that consistency alone) nor a particularly memorable one.

I called specifically to ask about a sandwich I wanted to order to make sure of the bread(crostini roll) used, the Boars Head meats with fresh mozzarella and was told that's what's on the sandwich. This was a pickup order and when I got home to eat the sandwich it was very small, soggy bread (not crostini) and I don't believe it was Boar's Head cold cuts and there was no "fresh mozzarella" even though I called to verify. As you can guess I was extremely upset that I paid $13 for a $7 sandwich and the pasta salad was way overcooked and soggy. When I called to speak with the manager or owner I was brushed off after being on hold for a while. Never again! Trust me don't waste your money. I can't believe that some of these restaurants are even in business, what has the food industry come to?

The food and staff were amazing. We had the university and Chicken salad sandwiches with salads as our side. The atmosphere was super cute. The staff were friendly. I would highly recommend checking out this lunch spot!

The food here is absolutely incredible! But you can never call and place an order to pick up. Either the phone just rings and rings or they pick up and can never hear you. It takes 10 minutes to order a sandwich because you have to sit there and repeat yourself over and over. And all they can say is sorry about the phone issues. The resolution is simple..fix the phone!! I unfortunately can’t eat here for most of my lunches as I only have a 30 minute lunch and it’s impossible to get my food ordered and ate in that time. Wish I could support this business more but it’s just to much...
