BEWARE The staff is NOT properly trained to identify gluten free items. We were excited to find a gluten free bakery in Hilton Head! We went in to get a gluten free bagel, we assumed that a GLUTEN FREE BAKERY would only sell gluten free. This is not the case, they also sell regular bakery items!! We ordered a gluten free bagel, I had a conversation with the cashier about whether it was a going to be soft and good since it was gluten free and he assured me it would be and it would be very good. We got the bagel, ate it, it was very good! We enjoyed it so much that we went in to order another and that's when someone from the kitchen came out to tell me they were out of gluten free bagels and what I had received was a wheat bagel!!!! Imagine my horror to find out I had just enjoyed a wheat bagel from a gluten free bakery!! We were so disappointed and angry. Thank goodness I'm not celiac, but gluten sensitive and suffered only digestive issues, but what if I had been celiac??!! After complaining to the owner's husband, the only thing they could say was "well, sorry, everyone makes mistakes, we're only human". REALLY? They didn't even offer a refund, or seem to understand the importance of the matter. People seek out a gluten free bakery for a reason. Staff should be thoroughly trained in the importance of what they are selling, and it's beyond me why a gluten free bakery even sells items with gluten to begin with!! Very disappointing. Be certain you know what you are getting if you...
Read moreWe ordered a smash cake for my daughter's first birthday and were very disappointed. I had called them and requested the cake over the phone since we live an hour away. I said that I wasn't sure what they were called since I was using Google but that I was pretty sure they were called buttercream roses and that they were the popular cakes all over online right now. I stated that I wanted the buttercream roses all over, and that I wanted it to be light pink. The person on the phone said she understood what I meant. I wish I had thought to send a picture over Facebook but unfortunately I did not. I just wish if that hadn't been possible or understood by the baker that I was called back later to be more prepared.
When we picked it up and she showed me the cake it was nothing like I was expecting. I asked if it was possible to fix and she told me the baker had already left. I did not want to leave with the cake but we need egg free due to allergies, so I felt stuck. Fortunately, we were able to have the icing fixed exactly the way we wanted it to be by a neighbor.
We ended up tasting the cake as well once pictures were done and the flavor was really off. It tasted like grainy bread dough. I'm not sure if something went wrong in the baking process or if this is just what their vegan cakes taste like. Either way the whole thing was very disappointing, and upsetting. With such great reviews we were expecting a much...
Read moreWhat a lovely spot! Several vegan sweets available, though nothing substantial for a brunch-type meal for vegans. They also upcharge for nondairy milk, I paid $0.75 for mine. What I had was very good! Highly recommend if you're in the area.
Edit to add based on company response: as a business focused on making food more inclusive, I'd imagine the experience of having to pay more to get your needs met was part of why this place exists. Knowing how little the price difference is between nondairy and dairy milk, $0.75 per serving is a bit jarring on top of the base price. Full cartons are being paid off with about 3 drinks. I also bring to question why dairy milk doesn't have a smaller upcharge and is free to add to drinks? I doubt you're getting dairy milk for free, so my guess is that you factor the price of dairy milk into your drink prices. Why not split the difference and just add $0.50 to the base drink price? With the existing prices I doubt that would impact sales by much. You might even start to see more dairy-free customers since they no longer feel ostracized by having to pay more to give you business. For me personally, it's the principle more than the price, especially in a store meant to be more welcoming to those who can't usually buy baked goods. Either way, I sincerely wish you the best of luck in your...
