We were camping nearby on a cold rainy morning and decided to check out Holly in the hope of finding a great quaint place that serves an awesome breakfast. The Bittersweet Cafe is in the middle of Holly's historic block of buildings built in the 1800s. Inside and out, the restaurant is cute. Everything is clean, organized and while the menu was not consistent with the setting (not so much hearty breakfast options that you would expect, I was reassured that the food would be good when I saw "wheat, white, rye, marbled-rye and pumpernickel" as toast options. Because I used to love them and hadn't had one in 25 years, I ordered a Greek omelette w pumpernickel toast and a side of ham. When served, the omelette was was a tiny 2 egg sterile--looking omelette that looked and tasted like (I'm not saying that it was) a pre-packaged omelette heated in a microwave. While I could see the feta cheese, I could barely taste the a hint of salt flavor that feta would add. The vegetables were chopped so fine that that the omelette had no texture. My pumpernickel toast was not real bread—it was a pumpernickel flavor of something like Wonder Bread. Instead of a slice of ham, the ham I was served looked like a single-serve package of extremely processed and micro-sliced lunch meat that was heated/browned in a wad on the grill. In summary, two breakfasts, plus tip ran $36. While we wanted to really love this place, there was no continuity between the historic setting, the beautiful, clean and organized restaurant, the friendly service and the soul-less food. My 3 stars is my compromise between 5 for the setting/service and 1 for the food. This was our first and only visit and we only had breakfast. I have no idea how lBittersweet's lunch and dinner...
Read moreI had very high hopes based on the reviews, but left disappointed. The inside was full so we were offered outside seating, which was fine. However we sat for at least 10 minutes before being brought water. During this time a couple at another outside table that arrived well after us, ordered and received beers and waters. I also had to ask for the table to be wiped down. I ordered a soup and half sandwich (ham on sourdough). The gazpacho was very good, but the sandwich was terrible. The bread was stale and the ham was a very small serving of razor thin sliced lunch meat that I didn't think was very good quality. My daughter order the crab melt. Now I didn't expect jumbo lump crab meat for $10, but the imitation crab meat on the sandwich tasted super funky. She just scraped it off and ate the bread. My other daughter's hot dog and wife's BLT they both said were fine. Right when they brought out our food it started to rain, there was a group leaving a table with an umbrella and the waitresses told us we could fight with another group over moving to that table. The rain stopped for a while then got heavier so we just picked up our plates and came inside only to find the restaurant was now half empty. Why didn't our waitress ask us if we wanted to come inside out of the rain? Maybe we ordered the wrong menu items or came on the wrong day, but I was impressed by neither the food nor the service. We will...
Read moreI was looking forward to coming here and prepared to be patient since it's mother's day. We had a reservation @1p for 7 people and arrived a little early, but they had apparently already given our reservation away to a different walk-in party of 7 because I guess they didn't bother to ask for a name. They sat us pretty quickly after that but it was a wait for water, my father-in-law got us our menus and we waited over an hour for our food. Portions are small. Wait staff was kind but largely absent, even after it stated to clear out and the rush was over. Biggest issue was we finally got our plates and I had to briefly step out with my baby, came back a few minutes later with only a couple bites from my plate and the waitress had cleared it as she presented my husband with the bill. Not only did I not get to eat 98% of my food, but we were still charged for it. You would think with a plate that full that you'd ask before clearing it. Kind of a rookie mistake. Iced mocha was good. Can't comment on my meal. Not very motivated to try here again. Like I said, I was prepared for slow service today, but if your patrons wait more than an hour for food, you should give them more than 5 or 10 minutes to eat and definitely not clear a full plate....
