Treebird Market — Restaurant in Hood River

I LOVE mothers, and my partner and I eat and shop there with extreme frequency. It is the only entirely Vegan grocery store and lunch cafe in the entire Hood River area, and I cannot express in words how happy it makes me. They have rotating kombucha on tap, as well as a selection of home-made soups that are TO DIE FOR (the Hungarian Mushroom is an intense favorite for many, including myself). There are sandwiches, several showcasing Hood River's own Tofurkey products, as well as hummus wraps and salads...all pre-made and ready to grab and go. The smoothie/juice bar is available in back for those who prefer their lunch liquified.

OH, and they also make vegan pizza, with an assortment of random toppings - no requests, you just get what they make that day - and the house-made cheezy tahini sauce they put on top makes regular cheese cry with shame. But good luck getting the pizza...they don't make a lot, and the two of us have usually cleared them out of it by 1pm. :) Maybe they'll start making more.

Mother's also makes a whole slew of their own delicious products: Toum (aka Garlic Crack), assorted tahini "cheez" sauces and ground nut butters. In the back they have a bulk section and refrigerators that house bags of carob nut clusters (carob has never tasted this good) and assorted nuts (the Spicy Thai Cashews are a favorite).

If you go to other grocery stores and ask for items that make the employees give you blank "Huh?" stares, Mother's is the place that will know what you're talking about and likely have it in stock. They've been a staple in the Gorge for many years, and I hope many, many, MANY more. Give them a visit next time you're in town. The staff and the products...

It's a very nice cute store that I could buy good quality meats and produce. They are decently priced as well. The reason I marked 4 (I wish I could mark 4.5) stars is what happened at the cashier once. Everybody there is very friendly and helpful usually but one day, I put all my stuff on the counter and was ready to pay. There were two employees on the other side of the till talking. One girl turned her head and looked at me and noticed I was waiting. But she didn't say anything or asked me if I was ready to pay. They kept ignoring me for a few more minutes. I wasn't in a hurry or anything. So I tried to kill my time by checking out snacks displayed near the cashier. After a while, they stopped talking and finally asked me if I was ready. I understand they needed to discuss something related to work. But I'd worked in the same industry for years and just felt disappointed by the way I was treated as a customer. Just "Hi, are you ready? I will be with you shortly." would...

It was a absolute terrible experience because I went in to get strawberries for my mom, I grab the strawberries and they were way to expensive it was $7.49 and then at checkout I was going to get a cookie with the strawberries since it was $1.25 and I knew that the two items won’t be more than $10 because in Oregon this is no sales tax. But when I was ready to pay they said it was $10.24 which is terrible because before tax it would’ve been only $8.74 but it wasn’t it was a whole $1.50 of tax! Again there is not supposed to be sales tax in the state of Oregon. So safe to say I will NEVER go to treebird EVER again! Also not to mention but when I left I was crying and they didn’t even ask if I was ok…...
