So, I like to read other people’s reviews before writing mine. Some of the claims sound super exaggerated like throat infection, hair in the food (no picture of course), vomiting and diarrhea afterwards (maybe), etc. Most of the 1-2 star reviews have no pictures to back up their reviews. Parking can be hectic if you go on a Fri-Sun. That’s a given. I do see customers loitering around outside the restaurant and parking lot after they have already eaten. That part you can’t really blame the restaurant for, they don’t have security to tell people to go home.
I wanted to get some of the main points out of the way. Now, onto the restaurant itself. When we walked in, the staff opened the doors for us. They were really busy on a Friday night. Bathrooms were clean and there was always a staff member cleaning the bathroom when I went. Service was excellent. They made sure we got everything we needed (I was with my brother and his family. He has one infant and one toddler). Food can be too spicy for those ages or kids not used to spicy foods. We ordered gobi manchurian (cauliflower), chicken lollipops, garlic naan, shrimp makhani, goat chops, and a mixed bbq platter. For drinks we tried mango lassi, mint lemonade, and salted lassi. Overall, it’s a 4.5 for me but I’ll give it a 5 rating to round it up.
-gobi manchurian 5 - one of my favorites. The skin is crispy. The actual cauliflower with the sauces were not spicy at all. It has a light, sweet taste. -chicken lollipop 5 - the drumsticks were very meaty and juicy. Please try it with the chili sauce for added flavor. A must try. -garlic naan 5 - recommended. Don’t need to say much except that one batch may not be enough. Bread is very moist and hot. -shrimp makhani 4 - I gave this one a 4 because they could have added a bit more shrimp to the curry. Other than that, the curry itself was flavorful. This would pair perfectly with rice. -goat chops 5 - popular for a reason. The meat was extremely tender and succulent. You can choose between mild and spicy. Mild is great if you have kids. -mixed bbq platter (chicken and beef seekh kabab, chicken and beef bihari, and chicken boti) 5 - a nice blend of meats, the mild still packs some heat. Use the sauces provided for added taste. All of the meats were cooked well. You’ll have some leftovers. Generous portions. -mango lassi 5 - can’t go wrong with the classic mango lassi. -mint lemonade 5 - I like this. Very refreshing from the mint. My 3 year old niece loved it. Toddler friendly. -salted lassi 3 - I would get this if you absolutely love the yogurt taste. I eat yogurt everyday but this one was okay. Not something I would order again. I think I should have gotten the sweet lassi. Salted lassi is an acquired taste....
Read moreNut allergy friendly: The servers verified that every dish we ordered was nut allergy-friendly and said they would let us know if there were any peanuts or anything else of concern. True to their word, many of the desserts (if not all) have some kind of nuts, and so I avoided them. No issues with the entrees/mains that we ordered.
Time-to-Food: 10-15 minutes
We arrived at 7PM and while there were people milling around outdoors, I only had a few minutes' wait for three people. Their waitlist system is very simple with a QR code to scan. Menu is also on a QR code, so... don't forget your phone.
For three people, we ordered:
-Chai Tea (4.5/5) and one with Jaggery (unrefined sugar) (4/5): I prefer drinks that aren't that sweet, so I got a plain chai tea while another person got one with the jaggery. There is a very noticeable difference in sweetness - best I can describe it is ordering boba with 0% sweetness vs. 50% sweetness. I really enjoyed the chai tea I had - not too spice forward, just enough to make it rich and flavorful. -Mango Lassi (5/5): I sampled a mango lassi ordered at the table and it was less sweet than the chai tea with jaggery. Very fruity and intense mango flavor. Might be one of the best mango lassis I've ever had. -Chicken Lollipops (5/5): Came in a set of 5. Nearly as crispy as a Korean fried chicken wing and the spices were delicious. -Goat Chops (5/5): Also comes in a set of 5. Lived up to all of the hype. The best I can describe them is like a ribeye that you can hold in one hand and take tender bites out of. One criticism came from my table and it was a slightly uneven distribution of spices; sometimes it did feel like you were taking a bite of pure spice. But overall, very well seasoned, perfectly cooked, tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. -Mixed BBQ Platter (3/5): I would say this was the weakest part of the meal. We ordered this thinking it would be very sharable, and it was. But, I think I've had better kabobs/bihari elsewhere, even at some Persian restaurants. The spices were delicious but the textures were a bit mushy to me. -Garlic Naan 2x (4.5/5): Soft and buttery and garlicy. Perfect pairing with anything else.
The others at my table got desserts (chocolate mousse, rabdi kheer, and the chaat) and said everything was delicious. I couldn't have anything due to nuts, though.
Overall, Aga's lives up to the hype and is definitely a cornerstone of Houston. Looking forward to coming back for the goat biryani and other...
