Extremely unprofessional experience. I used to frequent this bar regularly and considered it one of my go-to spots—until a personal situation with one of the bartenders, Manny, completely changed everything. After a brief romantic involvement, I had gifted him a very personal and meaningful item: a vintage Spider-Man figurine I had held onto since a special trip to Chicago with my uncle—someone I hadn’t seen in years. That toy cannot be replicated or replaced.
When the relationship lost momentum—on his end, not mine—I kindly asked to retrieve it. Instead, I was told it was “lost.” Later, I heard it may have been resold on eBay, where it’s valued between $400–$500. Manny tried to dismiss it by saying it was “only worth 50 cents.” OK—if he’s focused on money, that’s on him. But you don’t just throw something away that carried that kind of emotional weight. From a “small gift” to a “big one,” the irresponsibility here reeks—not just from him, but from the establishment where it was given.
To add insult to injury, I still remember being there at closing time, waiting for Manny while we were romantically involved. In front of me, the manager Drew decided it was appropriate to loudly criticize Manny, saying he “sucked” at his job and that trainees from six years ago would have outperformed him. But those trainers aren’t even there anymore. It was incredibly unprofessional. And why would I sit there—loyal, supportive—watching the man I was pursuing get disrespected like that in front of me? It was embarrassing for everyone.
When I returned to Houston after two weeks in LA, I came back hoping for familiarity—only to be told by Maribel and another bartender that they were “uncomfortable serving me” due to personal matters. Meanwhile, they were fine serving my friend and personal driver, who has a hearing impairment. But why would he want a drink if the person he was driving couldn’t even be served? It felt targeted and petty.
Let’s not forget Drew again, who finds time to brag about his Tesla T3 as if it’s some kind of VIP badge. That’s cool—drive what you want—but as a woman and a customer, why would I care? That kind of energy should be poured into managing your staff and running a professional environment.
If you still decide to go, ask for Corey. He’s one of the few who knows how to make a proper drink and treats customers with respect. Manny—who I now deeply regret ever entertaining—is only posted at the end of the bar due to “seniority,” despite barely being there a year. Watching him sweep up broken glass was honestly the only part that aligned with his skillset.

Read moreI recently visited the perfect evening hangout spot in the heart of Houston called Anvil, close to Rice University. This charming bar has quickly become my favorite place to unwind and enjoy some of the best cocktails and spirits in town. The atmosphere at Anvil is incredibly cozy and inviting. As you step inside, you're greeted with warm and low lighting that sets the mood for a relaxing evening. The unique low-lighting decor and comfortable seating make it feel like you're in a cozy place. But what truly sets this place apart is its extensive selection of cocktails and spirits. Whether you're a whiskey lover, a fan of craft cocktails, or simply looking for a well-mixed classic, they've got it all. The bartenders here are true masters of their craft, and they take pride in mixing up some of the most delicious and unique drinks I've ever had. The cocktail menu is a work of art, featuring various options to suit every palate. From old-fashioned classics to inventive and signature concoctions, you're bound to find something that suits your taste. I highly recommend your choice of anyone from the list, and I am sure they won't disappoint you. The selection of spirits at Anvil is equally impressive. They have a well-stocked bar with various whiskies, bourbons, and more. It's a paradise for spirit enthusiasts looking to savor a special drink. What I love most about this place is the laid-back and chill vibe. It's perfect for a casual evening with friends or a date night. The background music adds charm, and you can enjoy your drinks. Overall, Anvil is a hidden gem for those seeking a cozy and intimate evening hangout spot. The combination of a warm ambiance, outstanding cocktails, and a wide range of spirits makes it a must-visit. It's where you can forget your worries, unwind, and create beautiful memories. I can't...
Read moreI went on a Thursday night, so it was packed even though they have plenty of seating. Lots of huge booths, so you can come with a large group and still sit together. I want to come again on a quieter day because the atmosphere was nice. We were able to squeeze into two seats on the very end of the bar near the restrooms.
Bartender did the best he could to tend to us in the rush, but of course we were only able to speak to him, like, three times. That’s all fine and dandy, though. The poor guy didn’t even know what time it was.
For drinks, I got the Waltzing Matilda, and friend got the Airmail. I would recommend either of them. They were very refreshing. Like “OMG my mouth is PARCHED and I am DYING for something to drink” kind of refreshing (yes, I was really thinking that before we arrived at the bar). I actually finished my drink, and any of my friends can tell you – I am not a big fan of alcohol. So that’s saying something, I think. All the drinks are pretty pricy for what you get though.
We also ordered some snacks. I got the Pork Belly Tacos. They were small, but there was just the right amount of coleslaw and pork. I didn’t want something heavy, and these were perfect. Friend got the Warm Milk Curds, which sounds weird (well, because it IS weird), but oddly enough it was delicious. Comes with some small slices of warm and toasted buttery baguette. It’s like a weird take on oatmeal or cereal. But so good.
Basically, a decently decorated, crowded bar with a hipster-y vibe that serves expensive drinks in much too...
