Eating at Cuu Long Quan was a great experience. It was nostalgic and reminded me of how old school Asian restaurants ran. You walk in and it smells like a 1980s Vegas casino—sterile cleaner mixed with cigarette smoke. This snapshot from another generation was complete with the classic Asian restaurant decor and the DVD/VHS combo player with a Burl Ives claymation special playing.
The waiter was typical for a great Asian place—direct, prompt, utilitarian, and mostly just saying “okay” for much of the meal but as you depart, he becomes quite jovial and talks you up for a few minutes. Classic!
I think sketchy is too strong of a word (we never felt unsafe) but the shopping area has stores with barred windows, there’s shards of broken glass in the parking lot, and at least 8 closed circuit cameras in the restaurant so something noteworthy might have gone down in the past. Lots of charm and character!
The dishes were solid offerings. We got shrimp spring rolls (though we ordered pork and shrimp), combination pho, grilled pork with egg rolls and vermicelli, and the stir fried noodles with chicken/beef/shrimp. All of them tasted great—the pho was savory, the varied texture and mix of tastes of the vermicelli dish was amazing, and although the sauce and meat of the stir fried noodles were average, the noodles had a great wok seasoned...
Read moreLeft Hobby airport and wanted a comfort food meal and this place was great (very close to the airport) We aren't familiar with the area and it's a little intimidating location but so glad we went bc the food is great old school Vietnamese food! Get their Vietnamese coffee they don't put creamer or anything extra it's just good ol fashion Cafe Sua Da. Egg rolls were yummy bc they use rice paper wrapper where it's all bubbly and crispy w a little chew. The pho is good w traditional flavors and love how they thinly cut the flank meat (it made it nice and tender ) broth was great and flavorful. The bun Thit Nuong (vermicelli w grilled pork) was good w a ton of veggies piled up high. The meat has the char grill taste which was great! Food is great if your in the area.
Don't expect ambiance bc it's a hole in the wall but it's clean just a little old. Service is not friendly so don't expect anything bc The man is old school too. He's simple straight to the point and I didn't want to bother him asking for anything :/
I'm still going to come back for the food if we are in the area. Lol we normally go to Bellaire China town to get Vietnamese food but this restaurant is so much better then most of them...
Read moreThe food was delicious. Pho broth is usually super fragrant, but this pho was a whole other level! It was so delicious and savory I highly recommend it. Big portion and fair price. No mo' needs to be said.
I hate being this guy, but visually speaking...The area where it's at may not be the best, but don't worry. Just come here. The only reason I gave 4 stars to service and atmosphere is because you can tell that English is his second language. I think it's the owner who's serving people. Some people might be turned off by that. He reminds me of my dad and his restaurant. English was his second language too so I'm not trying to bring him down or anything. He's great. He didn't mess up my order and he's super sweet.
Come here for the food. It's authentic and it's super affordable!! Big portions. It seems that the locals know what's up but if you are driving by or don't know the area, stop here. There was another shop nearby (won't say name) that was selling the same plate for 16 bucks. I love Vietnamese food because it's delicious and predatory capitalism hasn't grasped this food and made it overpriced. Support this place. You won't regret it, but your...
