I don't like to be one to give bad review but I feel I must on this one. We stopped for what I hoped to be a NICE quick meal, considering the ratings, before dropping my mother off at the airport but instead left disappointed, with regret, and a bitter taste… literally. My sister ordered a $35 dollar chorizo with fajita: fajita was tender but tasted old, as if it had been thawed out and thrown on the iron. The chorizo? You know that taste when you’ve frozen something for months then cook it? It had a frost bite taste, freeze burn type taste. Not saying it was frozen, but definitely tasted like it. Had a “fake” chorizo taste. Needless to say, the dish was halfway eaten. I ordered some mole enchiladas, and this is where the “bitter” factor comes in. The sauce had a weird burnt and bitter after taste that I’ve never tasted in ANY mole. It was sour almost, and the chicken inside it wasn’t flavorful to at least compensate for the sauce. I forced it down cause I was starving and was going to make that bill worth the fight. It was truly the worst mole I’ve ever tasted. The only good thing was the rice and agua de Jamaica. The service? Poor. The gentleman that sat us down has a “RBF”, no smiles, and looked like he was pissed from the get. Was not welcoming whatsoever. Restaurant atmosphere looked decent, mostly for the bar feel though. I don’t understand the 4.4 rating this restaurant has. Maybe it’s the bar and hungry drunk people rating it, but it was awful. Food is definitely overpriced for what you get as well. DOES NOT TASTE “AUTHENTIC”. On top of that, you get charged extra fees for everything. Paying with card? $4 fee. Take out order even if you’re already dining in? $1.40 fee. Want a little bit of sour cream? Up charge. It’s crazy man. All in all, I paid $109 for my mistake and I hope you don’t make the same one as I.

Soooo after reading all of the 4-5 star reviews, I'm a bit hesitant to leave the following. To start, the 9-10 chips in the three inch diameter bowl along with the two tablespoons of salsa wasn't going to cut it for the three of us. We asked for more and they obliged. My usual go to is a chili relleno, but at $18 I couldn't do it. So I went with the chicken breast in a mole sauce. We also ordered a large guacamole to split between the three of us. The guac came out first as requested in a small molcajete bowl. It was heaped, looked nice until we realized it was less than half a cup of guac on top of a mound of iceberg lettuce. This was NOT a $10 large bowl of guacamole!! Now we're getting a little suspect. After waiting 35-40 minutes, our dinner finally arrived. What I'd ordered was a chicken breast with mole sauce. What I got was a SLICE of a chicken breast, approx a quarter of an inch thick, covered in, what I would describe as a powdered beef gravy with Coco powder added to it. The 1/4" chicken was so tough I couldn't cut it with a fork. The attached pic shows the 'chicken breast' in top of frame, along with the piece I cut and tried to eat. I am a sixty plus year old Texan and spent my first thirty in the Houston area. I know TexMex!! Never EVER have I sent a plate of Mexican food back to the kitchen, much less just said eff it. Well I guess there's a first time for everything and it happened here. The manager was not apologetic and didn't seem to care. As for the other two in my party, they were less than happy with their meals, but did eat most of it. I cannot recommend Guanatos Grub. It's extremely overpriced and bar none the worst experience I've ever had at a Mexican food establishment.

Guanatos Grub in Houston, Texas, is an absolute gem that deserves every bit of praise it receives. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with warmth and hospitality that makes you feel right at home. The portions here are incredibly generous, ensuring you'll never leave hungry. They start you off with fantastic salsa and chips made with golden peppers sweet and not too spicy. Now, let's talk about the molcajete – it's truly a masterpiece. The smokey meat is beyond words, loaded with papers and onions, fried cheese, grilled chicken, and chorizo. Everything is so tender and flavorful that it's practically addictive. Both flour and corn have handmade tortillas and amazing!!! Every bite is a burst of deliciousness that leaves you craving more. It's easily one of the top ones I have ever had!!! Make sure you. Are you ready to eat because this bad boy is packed!!!! And let's not forget about the birria – it's a must-get!!! The crunchiness combined with the intense flavors makes it an unforgettable dish that you'll be dreaming about for days. But perhaps the star of the show is the chapala pork burrito. It's a flavor explosion wrapped in a tortilla, and you definitely don't want to miss out on it. Make sure you get it wet !! The sauce makes it what it is!!! Behind all of this culinary magic is the hard work of the owners and staff, who pour their hearts and souls into every dish they serve. Their dedication to handcrafting and building the restaurant shines through in every aspect, from the food to the ambiance. Overall, Guanatos Grub is a must-visit destination for anyone in Houston craving authentic and mouthwatering Mexican cuisine. You won't be disappointed!

The manager on shift today was incredibly unprofessional. Our server even apologized for her behavior a couple of times which he didn’t have to do at all!!!

The owners need to put this individual through more manager training sessions or better yet promote the server named Dezz to the manager position instead - he is a military veteran, was very good at being our server, and showed far more professionalism, grace, and understanding while this woman who we assumed was the manager lost it over us not wishing to pay for a plate of specially made nachos that ended up being totally inedible.

We paid for the rest of the bill - minus the inedible nachos after a miscommunication over it initially being charged - and gave a tip to Dezz as well.

But this “manager” could not let it go and proceeded to act like an unhinged fool 10 minutes later after we had already left the establishment by coming out to the parking lot and trying to confront me while I sat alone in my vehicle to talk on the phone with my sister, and conveniently for her, after my cousin - a guy who doesn’t suffer foolish behavior from anyone - had already departed in his own vehicle.

I had actually planned to walk back inside and order food to go for my sister. But that bizarre incident quickly made me change my mind. Just like she caused my cousin to change his mind about ordering a different dish when she started with her strange behavior after he calmly and politely said the dish wasn’t cooked very well. My sister was on the phone, overheard the entire confrontation, and was actually worried for my safety at one point.

The owners need to train this lady better on customer relations and problem-solving. Or, as I said, promote Dezz who is far better equipped with problem-solving customer...
