I have dined in La Tapatía since 2019 and have always loved their food EXCEPT today (11/17/2024).
I arrived first and informed the two people who were standing in front that it would be a party of 3 but that I wanted to be seated and order. I was told that i could sit anywhere and chose a booth in the corner.
I ordered a lemonade, chips and salsa, and a botana fiesta (35.95). The botana fiesta is a large sampler plate; it includes street tacos, mushroom caps with ground meat and sausage, chicken flautas, bacon wrapped jalapeños with cheese and ground meat. I took a bite of the jalapeño and it had a strange taste. I disassembled it and sampled each piece separately. The bacon was not cooked all the way, and the cheese and meat tasted off. After scraping the cheese/meat out of jalapeño completely, I ate the jalapeño. This is the point were the other two people arrived. One ordered fajita street tacos (10.95), arroz (2.15), frijoles charros (2.50), and the other ordered the tortas asada (14.95). Two waters. And another lemonade ($9 for two lemonades). They sampled the jalapeños and didn't like them, either. There was something off with them.
I ate the chicken flautas although the chicken was dry and flavorless. The mushroom caps had the same meat and cheese as the jalapeños and tasted the same (not good).
The tacos were dry and the meat tasted off. I ordered the caldo de res (14.95) with flour tortillas.
The tacos, tortas arrived. Followed by the caldo with corn tortillas. I informed our waiter that it was supposed to be flour tortillas and he huffed and took them away. (by the way, it was very difficult to get service. He spent most the time in the corner booth on the other side of the restaurant with other staff.). The new tortillas were plopped down next to me.
The meat in the caldo tasted bad. The broth was an unknown flavor. The other person sampled it and didn't like it. The tacos were off in flavor. And the meat in the tortas tasted strange as well. The rice was dry. No one finished their meal.
We did take half the torta home (because the person does not like to waste food) along with frijoles charros. The frijoles were the only good thing. Oh! The green salsa withe saltless chips was good too. I do want to point out that we were asked how things were and i didn't complain.
We asked for to go boxes and after receiving them, it took another 10 min to be able to flag the waiter to get the check. Our bill was $97.91 (plus tip, which I did 15%) making the grand total $112.60.
We left and headed to HEB across the street. By the time we walked to HEB my stomach was hurting. I felt náuseas. So did the other person.
By the time I made it home, i threw up. And i feel awful. Considering i didn't eat anything else today in anticipation of eating here, I regret my choices. I will not...
Read moreCan La Tapatia break the curse for this nice corner restaurant location? After all, before La Tapatia took over this spot, the previous tenant was also a Tex Mex restaurant. In my opinion, there's a slight chance but they do need to do some more improvements to do so.
First of all, Rioja is right next door to this spot.Yes, I understand one is Tex-Mex and the other is Spanish tapas, but I'll be honest, to average going out to eat consumers, they're all the same in a way. For one thing, they are trying to distinguish itself from all other Tex Mex in Houston. For example, on their menu, their fajita platter called as de la parrilla, or from the grill.
We came here for a weekday dinner and there wasn't too many customers that night. The hostess let us choose either table or booth and we choose the booth. After we sat down, the server came and took our drink order and we were looking over the menu while we wait for the drink and the chips + salsa. Now as for the food, I did order the One Parrillada Mixta for 2 since I felt like beef and chicken, but it also comes with shrimp which is good as my dining mate like shrimp the most.
The food came out in good time along with all the sides to make the fajitas. The food is good but nothing really special that makes this place stand out from any other Tex Mex in the area. But the plus side about this place is that it is really close to where I live and the next Tex Mex restaurant is a few more blocks down from this place. With the price of the food and the service, I would definitely come back again when I crave for more fajitas or any other...
