It's not often that I use the word "awful" in a review, but that's what this place has recently become: awful. This used to be a "go-to" place on weekend afternoons. With it's big deck shaded by old live oak trees, Texas-themed music (both modern and "classical") played loud enough to hear but low enough that you could still talk to your tablemates, and expansive menu (including the best Monte Cristo sandwiches in Texas), I've always found the Live Oak crowded on nice afternoons with biker groups near the outdoor stage and families with kids on the other side of the deck near the playground. The long-term waitresses who knew your preferences topped off the experience. It was like a little piece of the Hill Country dropped into the middle of Houston.
But all that is gone now. The table service is gone, you need to order inside at the bar. The menu is gone, reducing your choices to (very literally) just a hamburger, a chicken sandwich, or a BLT (and be sure to scan the QR code as you climb the steps onto the deck, because that's the only menu you're going to get). The music is gone, replaced by anonymous urban pop and rap. And the food, well...the food is awful. On a recent visit in early May of 2022 the hamburger was a sad squashed thing served on a stale, almost crispy, roll. The fries were oily and limp, and obviously fried at too low a temperature in last month's oil. Even the generic soft drinks (no Coke, Pepsi, or Dr. Pepper here) were flat and tasteless. I don't know if the place has been sold to new management, or the existing management just decided to cut corners to save money, but clearly whoever is in charge just doesn't care. Given the fact that at noon on a sunny Sunday there were just three tables of customers, my prediction is that this place will be gone soon. And that's a tragedy. At least the great live oak shaded deck is till there, while it lasts. Go for a beer or two while you still can for old time's sake if you want to, but...
Read moreFirst let me say the manager working last night (2/16/18) was awesome. She was working hard and checking on us more than our server was. The prices are very reasonable and the food was pretty good. They have great deals during happy hour which is from 4pm - 8pm. With all that being said, the service was the absolute worst I've ever experienced. Within minutes of arriving we sat down and our server brought us menus and asked us what we wanted to drink and if we wanted an appetizer. After she brought us our drinks and appetizer is when the service went terrible. We waited 15 minutes for someone to finally come check on us (which was the manager, not our server) and that was after our drinks were empty. We moved inside soon after because it was getting cold outside. Once inside we noticed we weren't the only customers getting terrible service. I noticed two other tables inside that weren't getting attention from a server. I also noticed multiple people from the outside coming inside asking to pay or just bringing the money to the server since the server wasn't coming by and checking on the tables. We won't be returning because in 3 hours there we only got 3 individual beers and 1 pitcher with an appetizer and two entrees. When you're at the bar for 3 hours you expect to get a few more drinks. It seemed like it was a free for all when it came to which servers got which table. Not to mention, after we sat for 25 minutes inside waiting to order, the manager sent someone else over to take our order. Our server, Jeanette, then made us feel extremely uncomfortable by saying things like "Well who was it? This is the first I'm hearing of this. You guys know I'm the one taking care of you." We then watched her argue with the server who politely took our order. We just wanted to eat our food and leave...
Read moreThis is one of the worst establishments I have ever seen. First, we ordered back in 2010, and they totally got that order screwed up. Nothing was right, and the manager offered us a $0.50 coupon for our next visit. I was insulted and banned this place until today. That was a mistake. The ban is back in force, and this place will not get another chance. Today we ordered for delivery, and the food was more or less thrown together. The driver forgot our drinks, so I had to call to get them to come back. We ordered three salads and one appetizer and an extra Jalapeno Ranch dressing. While we could not narrrow down a location, the food smelled like something burned. Might have been the chicken in our salad or the fried mushroom appetizer. We get a call from the front desk here at work that our drinks have arrived only to find that one drink had arrived. I call the establishment again to have our remaining drinks delivered. It has been more than half an hour since my lunch ended, and I still have no drink. We also did not get the Jalapeno Ranch dressing. Whatever mistakes that could be made will be made by this establishment. I'd think twice before I spent my hard-earned dollars on a place that hardly cares about its customers. Now if I only had that drink I have been waiting on, it might help wash the bad taste left in my mouth after...
