I have been to Sweet Memes many many times alone and with friends and would like to offer my assessment of this establishment.
First and foremost the main problem with this place is, like their name suggests, that they are trying to do a hundred different popular things from many different Asian cultures all at once. Because of this they have a very large menu but fail to deliver on those items leading to less than desirable product and consistency issues.
The next major issue is their staff. The staff is very hit or miss. sometimes there are no problems and sometimes the staff is very rude and uninviting. There is one young lady in particular who has a very loathsome attitude. On several occasions she would respond with "What?" when I would approach the front counter or look at me like she hated her job. There is no consistency in staff attitude and behavior which leads me to believe that there is little in the way of staff training or customer service procedure.
Lastly, there is an issue with cleanliness. Over the years I have been coming here I have notices the dust collecting on the decor such as the hanging fake flowers, and the large oversized pillows slowly becoming soiled. It seems they have never done a deep cleaning of the store or washed the pillows/blankets that customers use. On one occasion as well I have noticed bugs/roaches.
To sum it up, if you want Boba or Ice cream, you'd be much better going to a place that specializes in Boba or Ice cream, and if you want Korean or Japanese desserts, you'd be much better going to a place the specializes in Korean or Japanese...
Read moreI'll be honest, the menu is great, the chef is definitely strategic, because you can't find a lot of these treats really conveniently anywhere in Houston, but I think they could benefit a lot from an image reconstruction of sorts.
My friends and I have agreed the interior design isn't appealing in the least (though maybe so for middle schoolers). It's honestly a little embarrassing bringing friends here as an adult even though the food is really cool, and isn't somewhere I would want to leisurely meet people at on a normal basis. There's simply too much going on for the purpose of social media appeal or japan-super-fan appeal (which I concede, was a successful marketing tactic). However, the aesthetic is cheap, inconsistent, and sprinkled with a bit too much saccharine kawaii. In this case, less is more. I think I would come here once or twice for the novelty of the sweets, but the interior design is just a bit too overpowering.
I don't prefer the next door BLK Dog Coffee much more than any shop, but its got a good atmosphere and there isn't so much decorative distraction, which makes it a nice place to meet and chat. I think that Sweet Memes has the potential to be so much better because in terms of menu, I don't think it is lacking (considering the type of place it wants to be).
Forgive me for the long (and perhaps scathing) post, but in truth, I do wish I could visit more often. And maybe others...
Read moreCame unplanned after walking by and noticing how well it was decorated for the holidays. There were several different areas within the store with different themes. The sitting areas were also very nice and had an outside cafe vibe. The furniture was very simple, but very creatively put together.
After debating between all the different teas, smoothies, yogurts, pancakes, waffles, toast, croffles, crepes, etc.. I finally settled on the Strawberry Souffle Pancake and Matcha Tiramisu for dessert. For the drinks, ordered the Fresh Mango Milk Tea and Coconut Cream Coffee. Everything was ready within 10 minutes and picked up at the counter. Similar to the attention of detail in decorating the store, the food and drinks looked amazing when they came out. They looked just as good in person as the pictures.
The Souffle Pancake was extremely soft, fluffy, and jiggly. Not just good looking, the taste was extremely good. The Matcha Tiramisu was creatively served in a wood box. It many rich layers topped with a good quality matcha on top. The drinks were just as good. The Coconut Cream coffee had nice flakes of coconut mixed in a thick cream coffee foam. The Mango Milk Tea had a nice mix of the natural tasting mango and milk tea. I will definitely have to come back to try their other menu items when visiting...
