I went to Union 2/5/24 with the intention of playing pool alone, it has become a fun hobby of mine so I wanted to practice. When I arrived I got money out the ATM and sat at the bar. Within the firs 5 mins of me being in the building, I was verbally attacked by a very intoxicated man who hurled profanity at me to "Get my attention" I wore a hoodie with my last name on it and he wanted to ask if I was related to Hakeem Olajuwon or Kareem Abdul Jabbar (strange but it was a bar, and people are drinking so I suppose). Due to me not realizing he was talking to me, I ignored him. After realizing I was the person he was speaking to, I was shocked by his insulting tactics to get my attention and simply stated "I will not respond to you" I was immediately called "Black Crap" and additional colorful insults regarding my race that I will spare those reading. No one surrounding him stepped to my aid, nor did they seem to have any issue with such an older gentlemen attacking me. The bartender was nice and polite however I had no back-up within that group, everyone silently displayed their support. It took the kindness of a complete stranger to support me and defend me, and for that I am truly grateful, however the damage was done; I was insulted simply for choosing to spend money there. It was VERY apparent that the staff knew this man and perhaps agreed with his statements, perhaps black people are not to feel comfortable in this establishment. And if that is the case, be proud. Blatantly share that black people are not allowed and relish in your hatred. Do not open your doors and accept from money from those whom you hate. It surely would have made a world of difference to me, and I would have gone to a place where I was welcomed. Needless to say, I was VERY DISSAPPOINTED ! It is 2024, Black History Month, within one of the most culturally rich areas..and still I have to deal with this, and endure the humiliation from the silence of those who had the power to correct it. Thank you Union Tavern for upholding the bigotry we all try to erase all over the world. Thank you for upholding deep seeded hatred and giving it a warm comfortable place to sit and have a nice drink. Wishing for the future of your business "progress" to reflect the unexpected pain and complete embarrassment that I felt that night. The number one bar in the area for low level thinking and action.
Note: Hakeem Olajuwon is my uncle. There could've been a great conversation had if the hatred...
Read moreUnion Tavern may be tucked away in our backyard, but the cozy, classic vibe inside feels like it was shipped straight from across the pond. The British pub style is spot-onâjust the right amount of charm without ever feeling stuffy. Youâll rarely find it rowdy or uncomfortably packed, although it gets a nice buzz on weekend nights.
From the friendly staff who learn your name quicker than you can order a second pint to the regulars whoâll scoot over and make room at the bar, thereâs a real sense that everyoneâs welcome. If youâre in the mood to belt out your favorite tune, karaoke night wonât disappoint, and the trivia crowd is always lively but never cutthroat.
BOTTOM LINE: Union Tavern nails that old-world pub feeling while staying true to a down-to-earth neighborhood hangout. This is the spot if you want a place where you can catch up with friends, sing a tune, or flex your trivia know-howâall in a friendly setting. Donât be surprised if it quickly...
