Ok.... I went online to order, 12 hour day, didn't want to cook at the hotel. My coworker wanted a ribeye, and it came with 2 sides, I wanted the short ribs, and a side, the option was not on the site.
I called the restaurant, and spoke to a woman named Brenda. She was very helpful, and took the order over the phone, and even placed it for delivery from Grubhub.
The order was placed, and charged at 1815. $77 for a Medium rare ribeye with broccoli, and mashed potatoes, and my short rib with veggie medley, and brussel sprouts. At 1930, I called and asked about the food, (it was supposed to be there in about 30-45 min.) I was informed that Grubhub never picked it up. Again I got Brenda, and she spoke to her manager, and they sent the order to Doordash. The order arrived at 2022. At 2000, Brenda called to apologize for the delay, and told me the order had just been picked up.
When we got the food, I was still able to cut the meat with a spoon, literally. My buddy ate his ribeye with the hotel plastic, it was that tender. everything was cold but was actually really good.
This restaurant is like the older ones that made people want to go out, and eat. American hospitality at it's best. Brenda was friendly, professional, and took pride in her restaurant, (I only know her name because I asked after she called). This is what customer service used to be like, and should be like. Grubhub is the reason for the poor service. The only thing I was upset at Welly's for, was no utensils, and no napkins.
I carry a small chef's kit with me, and can cook almost anything I want that doesn't require an oven. If Carbon steel, and cast iron can handle it, I can make it. I was just too tired to cook, and wanted a good meal.
Welly's delivered, and if the food had arrived on time, it would have been perfect.
I will order from them again, but most likely in person, or direct take out. I really want their food again, the way the intend it. The customer service reminded me of when I used to work in restaurants.
This one wants your business, and values the customers. Grub hub, give restaurants a bad rap. It's not the restaurant's fault on that the delivery service offered, and charged for a service they do not provide. They got the money, but provided NO service. Welly's did everything they could to...
Read moreIt was 77F today. It was a super nice sunny day, and barely and humidity. Setting the stage here. We were passing through Berlin and decided to stop for some lunch. Given the pandemic times we decided to eat outdoor seating and this restaurant had many tables open. Out of roughly 25 tables about 20 were available outside, so we approached to be seated and the hostess had to call the manager over because they couldn’t seat 7 of us, 4 children and 3 adults, not sure why that was necessary. They clearly had the availability but the managers attitude right off the bat was quite rough, she wouldn’t put 2 tables together (4+4) to accommodate us even though a waitress wanted to, she was shot down at the suggestion. “We’re not putting tables together and you have to be done in 2 hours” barked the manager. Ok fine, no worries, the tables are right next to each other no big deal. These particular tables didn’t have the umbrellas opened up, it was quite warm and sunny, but there were a few tables with the umbrellas already open, so we asked for them to be opened but the managers response was, “ we can’t open umbrellas because the patio heaters are ON”. What? It’s almost 80 out and sunny and you have the Patio heaters on? Weird. And when we pointed out that there were some umbrellas open at other tables, manager once again barked back lovingly, “we are NOT opening up any more umbrellas! Do you want to be seated?” Very poor attitude. Glad we walked away from this place. The manager needs to be fired, she lacked all the skills of a restaurant manager and she should seriously consider going back to her previous...
Read moreWelly’s Hudson has a nice and unique vibe, and while the tables around us seemed to really enjoy their food, I was disappointed in a few simple dishes we ordered. The place was crowded, clearly a local favorite, which makes me think they excel in many areas, but the kitchen needs to work harder on a couple of key items I tried.
We started with shared calamari, and unfortunately, everything about it was wrong - from the overfried, heavy batter to the rubbery consistency. It's hard to say this, but calamari like that shouldn't leave the kitchen unless it's heading for the trash.
The standout dish on our table was Simon’s Combo, which looked delightful. The presentation of the center-cut beef paired with shrimp topped with crabmeat breadcrumbs was visually perfect, enhanced by a vibrant ratatouille side. Although I didn’t personally taste it, the effort and care in plating this dish were clear.
The Caesar salad, on the other hand, was another letdown. The mushy cuts of Romaine lettuce paired with a thin, almost non-existent dressing that tasted straight out of a supermarket bottle left a lot to be desired.
Thankfully, the cream chowder soup saved the day. It was rich, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of the meal. While I didn’t get a chance to try other menu items, the soup and the effort shown in Simon’s Combo’s presentation demonstrated the kitchen’s potential. I hope they bring the same care and quality to all dishes. For now, I encourage them to revisit some of the basics - this place has too much promise to let a few dishes...
