I’m really struggling with Schooners as it’s been a huge staple In my youth and the food hasn’t changed much in 20 years. Not sure if it’s the nostalgia that keeps me coming back, or the food itself! The service has gone extremely downhill over the years. I was there yesterday(a Monday) at 5pm and the hostess (older lady tall w/glasses and short blond hair) told me and another party of 4 that they are short on staff. No bussers and the wait would be 20 minutes because she had to clear the tables herself. However, it was dead In there and there were waitresses to help. The other party decided to leave and I told her I’d be back and took a walk with my kids. I came back and was seated. Waitress was nice enough, however she didn’t show us the specials like other waitresses were doing and didn’t offer us bread like the other tables had and my children were hungry and a bit antsy. My 14 month old was whining a bit and the hostess kept shooting me glaring looks which made me extremely uncomfortable. A childhood friend randomly popped into the restaurant and came over to say hi to me and was chit chatting. Same glares like we were somehow being an inconvenience. The vibe from this hostess was that any guest coming to that restaurant is a huge inconvenience for her. Not one smile, agitated that people were walking in when it wasn’t even busy. I wonder why she’s even working there. The food there is pretty good. My absolute favorite is their steak tips! However they were all out yesterday so we got the calamari as an appetizer, son got the schooners burger and I got the shrimp scampi pizza. All delicious! Just don’t get the coffee it’s terrible!! They also don’t offer any bottled water and the tap water is also terrible. Right when our food came I handed our waitress my card and decided to pack up our food, and go up the street to go eat in my summer house. I could see that having children and especially a 14 month old was not wanted in that restaurant. When I was leaving, I was struggling to push my stroller through the swinging door and hostess walked right by not bothering to offer a hand. When your this cranky and old it’s time to just retire because your not doing the business any good…. A lot of the customers are loyal townies that keep this business thriving. I’m on the fence wether I ever want to come back solely due to...
Read moreAfter a long week of work, we spent a little time along the water to decompress. After that, we chose Schooners for a couple of their specials. We started with the Calamari, which was lightly breaded and hit the spot.
My wife selected the Sausage Orecchiette, which was hot, nicely spiced, and plentiful. I went with an End Cut of Prime Rib. It looked perfect, but it was barely warm.
I had a small bite or two before our very nice server returned. By that time, I had trimmed off the small amount I knew would be enough for dinner to be warmed in the kitchen - the rest wld be snacks or meals for the next few days.
Our server returned with my heated pieces of the End Cut and more unnecessary apologies, and they were very good. Normally, this could have been more upsetting, but given the end of a long week, and some relaxing time along the water, why bother getting worked up? Everything worked out fine in the end.
Return visit on 9/27 Prime Rib again for me - great flavor on the End Cut, and it was hot! I made it thru
Read moreI have to start by saying all around fantastic place. Friendly staff, great food, great for families or groups of friends, or even alone. I saw they offer take out, they have a bar with a TV on a different side so it doesn't interfere with the guests in the dining room. The staff makes sure to keep you up dated on when your food is coming. They offer delicious bread and butter while you wait for your food. The only downfall about that area is since it's next to the beach it is very hard to find free parking during the summer. Now the food, it was exactly what I was looking for. I have been craving fried shrimp for a while, it was exactly what I wanted. There is only 2 things I'd change; 1) on the board where seafood is written it would be easier to read if you guys made it more obvious which price went with which item. I can't see far away and had trouble seeing it. When I asked for the price she just pointed to the board which to me made it seem like it could move. 2) If they make their tartar sauce in house they should add a tiny bit of capers to itm it will make it SOOOO much better. Someone who is very picky about their food and as a chef as well I found that the secret to a great tartar sauce is a bit of capers goes a long way and dont be afraid to use a little of the caoer juice as well, yum! Now the fries PERFECT. The bacon on my friends BLT perfectly crispy just how i love it (sadly she does not but still really enjoyed the sandwhich) her onion rings where perfect as well nice and crispy but not over cooked, not thick but not...
