Don't expect many gringos at this very authentic Venezuelan restaurant. The clientele generally include Venezuelans and expats who will travel significant distances to get Venezuelan cuisine from Richard and his wife. Dona Maria's is not a fancy, white tablecloth type of establishment. But the ambiance is as authentic as the food. A limited number of tables in a small cafe-style configuration. Tequenos, arepas, true empanadas vs the Americanized version, pastelitos, and all the combination plates you'd find on a menu "back home". I was shocked to learn such an authentically good Venezuelan restaurant was in Humble, right across the road from the dive shop where I learned to SCUBA and spent much of my 30s and 40s. Didn't notice the faded Venezuelan flag visible from the street, which is the best way to find the cafe in a somewhat run down strip mall. Might take a minute to find, but you'll be glad you expended the effort.. especially when Richard's wife makes hallacas for the holidays. They even typically have Torontos, Susie's and other Venezuelan chocolate treats. They are open only until 5pm and are closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly and arrive hungry!...
Read moreFirst time trying this restaurant out. My family ordered delivery to sample some items. The arepa pelúa was the best thing we tried, but I was disappointed that the sauce, which I thought would be more like a hot sauce was actually some sort of avocado mayo. (I was expecting some spice). The burger was good. The Cuban sandwich was completely bland, looked nothing like the picture at all, was missing the pickles and garlic sauce and came with fries that were cold, mushy, undercooked and unseasoned. Was also disappointed by the tequeño because it wasn't fried like it should be- it was just a regular breadstick with cheese inside. My son said the pastelito was completely bland and unseasoned and that his grandma makes them better. We didn't try any dessert, but they do offer a variety. They also have Venezuelan snacks and candies for sale which is really cool. I think that if we were to eat here again, we'd do so inside the restaurant because maybe they would care more about the quality of the food they put out then. It seems like a lot of restaurants these days don't care about quality when you...
Read moreUnbelievable, never put a 1 star on any place. I went myself personally about a month ago during breakfast time, owner guy was so rude to me. I asked him what he recommended, since I am unfamiliar with Venezuelan cuisine, and he told me "If you dont know about the food then you shouldn't be here". I let it go, everyone is entitled to having a bad day and being a little rude and racist. But, today my husband went at 3:30pm and tried to order to go. Owner said they were done for the day, even though they clearly close at 4pm and people were inside waiting. When asked why dude said "we have something better to do than to serve you". So, my husband is Puerto Rican and I'm white, our daughter is half and half. I guess mr. Venezuelan owner didn't like that. Clearly racially prejudice on two separate accounts. Plenty of witnesses in the restaurant seemingly shocked from his behavior. Damn, never thought I'd be burned twice from the same guy in...
