I grew up in Humble, and moved away in the 90's, and frequently dined at Jade Palace with my family. I really enjoyed the food, service, ambience and portion sizes back then. I was back in the area last week, so I decided to take my 20 yo daughter bc she loves chow mein with the dry noodles but we cannot find it anywhere in our new town anymore.
I read the reviews and was prepared that this might not live up to my 35+ year old memories.
I stepped in, and it was like walking back in time (in a fun way). I know people who haven't been before will see older decor and may judge it negatively, but I often find the opposite at restaurants where it looks like a time capsule. Yes, the varnish on the tables has yellowed in the past few decades, but they were neat and clean and that is what's important.
We were greeted quickly by our waiter, Caleb, a young man who quietly and efficiently did his job, which also fit into the ambience of Jade Palace nicely.
The menus had changed slightly, but I was ecstatic to see my favorites were still there!
We ordered the lunch chicken chow mein with wonton soup and moo goo gai pan with egg drop soup. We upgraded the "large egg rolls" and added a half order of BBQ ribs and a pot of hot tea. I was given a choice of tea (new since the 90's) and chose Oolong.
It came out after our water and soup were delivered, and was steeped perfectly and very fragrant. No dumping hot water over tea bags and bringing out imperfectly steeped tea like at other places! :)
The soup bowls were much larger than anticipated and the "large" egg rolls were so 1980's portioned I could have wept with joy from nostalgia overload!! I cut into mine, and they contained a shrimp, plenty of vegetables and finely minced and well seasoned pork. My wrapper was a little underdone at the thickest part of the wrap, but I don't eat all the wrapper anyway so I didn't mind. My daughter's was perfectly fried and crispy.
The egg drop soup had a nice flavor, so many people make it too thick and bland, and here it was lighter with sooi many pretty egg stands floating in the yellow broth. I didn't see black pepper flakes, but it had a nice peppery flavor.
The won ton soup had 2 small slices of pork floating in it (which she ate before I could get a picture) and the dumplings were stuffed with a large amount of meat and seasonings. The only drawback she said was that the broth was a bit bland on its own, so she didn't finish all the broth.
Honestly, after eating the bowls of soup and egg roll, I was pretty satisfied, so for a lighter lunch, I'll just order those, but then the entrees came out.
Lunch portions include a cup of rice (we each choose fried) and a smaller(?) portion of the main dish. Hers also came with a cup of the dry noodles.
Everything was cooked perfectly. Chicken was cooked well and not chewy, vegetables in the moo goo gai pan were crisp-tender and the sauce was light but flavored well and not too salty.
My daughter loved hers as well.
The ribs took awhile to come (note: order them first and then order the rest of the food.) An older gentleman came out twice to apologize and explain they make them fresh when you order them, and honestly, I wouldn't have been able to eat my entree if we'd gotten them sooner, bc a half order of full ribs (not the tiny short ribs I remember) could be an entree by themselves!
We took about half of our entrees and the ribs home, and made 3 more meals from them later, so dinner was also covered!
Overall cost before tip was around $38 (the lunches were $12.50/ea with the upgraded egg rolls) and we ended up VERY full with leftovers!
When I'm in the area again, I'll definitely make a planned detour to eat here again and bring the rest of my family. I'm glad to see that a new generation is trying to bring this restaurant back and not completely change everything just...
Read moreOkay so this review is based off customer service. I went to this restaurant hoping it was going to be great. I mean based off the reviews it looked promising but when my hubby and I got inside I didn't feel comfortable. The place appeared clean but smelt like gas or something.
After ingoring all the signs, we sat down. Looked over the menu and even their lunch seemed a bit pricey for risky food. So we ordered drinks hoping that we could look over the menu in peace.
There seem to be pork in the majority of the items which wasn't looking to good for us.
Hubby got a can of soda and I ordered sweet tea which they don't have. So that was a bummer.
While trying to figure out what we could eat. They came to our table like 3/4 times. Asking if we were ready to order? Hmm...we just sat down.
Mind you were only sitting there for less than 10 minutes if that. It was our first time here so we had no clue what they served.
One lady came over to my table twice and then I guess the second lady that came felt like the first lady couldn't get us to order fast enough.🤔
Fries rice, and so on is my favorite and normally if you ask to not put pork in the food or ask for a vegetable roll instead of pork they will substitute it for you.
But it wasn't possible here.
So I can't tell you how their food is but I can say if you don't eat pork this is not the place for you.
On top of all of this I would say that the staff wasn't too people friendly. They rushed us so much that we just paid for our drinks and left.
So we didn't eat here but we did experience an expensive regular can of soda and about 16oz of unsweet tea with two ladies and a semi bad attitude. That is the main reason for...
Read moreIt's been about 40 years since we started eating at Jade palace. It was a favorite for our children followed by our grandchildren. In the last few years we had noticed a decline. We didn't like the rice and at our last visit the server was very irritable and didn't speak to us. She also wasn't speaking to her coworkers, and slamming dishes. One of the other servers assisted us with with a takeout order that we added to takeout to a grandchild. I noticed that she was limping and was apparently in a lot of pain. I know it wasn't personal and felt sorry that she had to still work. We didn't leave a review because of our feelings of loyalty towards Jade palace. However we hadn't returned. Our daughter came to Humble with her daughter and decided to take her child to a restaurant that she enjoyed growing up. Our daughter told us what a great experience and delicious food they enjoyed. That made us hungry for Jade palace. We went yesterday and it was every bit as good as reported. Two young woman with beautiful smiles took great care of us and the food was as delicious as ever. Yes the building is basically the same. Same aquarium and tables, but the floors had been replaced and the restaurant was very clean. I was glad to see the aquarium and tables because for me they have such good memories. Portions were so large that we brought home plenty of food that we ate for lunch today. It was just as delicious as yesterday. We look forward to returning. I want to thank the young woman who is the granddaughter of the original owners for her hard work and dedication to keeping this Humble...
