Been a customer of Olive Out for about 4 years. Used to love the feel, food, prices were all in the high B low A range. Our last visit on 11/16 will be the last. We were treated in an unfriendly way, never checked on once our Luke warm semi cool kabob arrived. My Moussaka was good enough but now it's in the C- to D category. What used to be a freshly made meal with yummy bechemal sauce is now a mouthful of pasty near tasteless TV dinner Shepherds pie ( no offense to Shepherds ) I'd like to comment on the Spanakitos but they didn't bring it. Could I of asked her where it was? Sure I could but why should I? The iced tea was a mismatch of black tea splash of tropical with hint of sour lemon. Our waitress was an older woman who has been there since the Greek gods wore winged shoes and has been pretty solid doing what waitresses do. But I'll tell you she was somewhere else on this night. She never came back to our table to check on us. She forgot my wife's Tsaki sauce. We hailed a busboy and convinced him to bring us some .it was in a micro mini plastic cup that holds about 3/4 of a tablespoon. One thing they did right was hurry and try to get us out of the restaurant. It was 15-20 mins before closing time and boy oh boy did they do a fantastic job of all standing around the cashier stations appearing to be waiting for the starters pistol at a marathon. No sooner had I taken my last swig of iced tea they were running in to grab all our plates , glasses , silverware etc... I think I blinked 3 or 4 times I then looked down and there's the bill. I'm thinking ok it's been a wet fart tonight I am sure they left off the Spanakitos on the tab ...but they were serious about really f'ing up our night. There it was the almost $8.00 charge...hailed our now ya see me now ya don't waitress telling her nice try. She looking very uninterested and aloof in her eye roll forced smile grimace. She looked at me and said , if you want we can make it and box it for you ....I told her I'd had enough and was to the point of breaking some plates. Now I know where that tradition comes from!! So basically the corrected bill came , I promptly put a goose egg as the tiperoo and we got the hell out .Oh in the way out no good byes or see you soon by the half dozen employees checking their cell phones or gazing at the 1990's TVs . ... In all a very bad night on all levels ....never to return as there are several better places to spend $$$ and be mistreated. Like Walmart on...
Read moreWhen people ask me where can I go for good Greek food in San Diego, I tell them go to Huntington Beach. Specifically, go to Olive Pit. No disrespect to other Greek restaurants, there are plenty of very good ones but it's hard to match the Olive Pit's ability to take a wide range of classic Greek recipes and make them even more delicious, at an approachable price range. On a recent trip I tried their tzatzki which is really hard to do really well or really poorly. Mainly because there are few ingredients, and as long as you use a really good yogurt your're in good shape. I was surprised at how delicious their tzatzki is. We were a whole table of Greeks who were passing it around going "really you have to try this!" The kind of thing you want to scrape clean off the plate. This isn't to say that every one of their dishes is perfect. Their spanakopita was not the best I've had, but very respectable. But a vast number of their dishes are really delicious. The lamb chops, horta, Greek salad, calamari, chicken kebab, pita wraps, all outstanding. Some non "traditional" Greek dishes they do, like their mushrooms, fried zucchini, feta fries are fantastic. The green bean side dish however was a little disappointing today, and I wasn't a fan of the baklava, but their bougatsa was one of the best I've ever had. (Sorry Mom...) We devoured our meal as if we hadn't eaten in weeks, and I was looking forward to having a Greek coffee with my dessert and I have to say that, unfortunately, it was probably one of the worst Greek coffees I've ever had. But having said all that, I would still say this is my top choice for Greek restaurants unless you are willing to go to a very high-end option, like Estiatorio Milo's in Las Vegas, Avra in Beverly Hills or Evvia or Kokkari in San Francisco. Or of course you could always go...
Read moreMy first time @ OPG & looking forward to returning to try more goodies on their extensive menu! It's primarily Greek w/some Italian dishes. It's very casual, order @ the counter where there are overhead menus, self-serve beverages, & staff deliver dishes to tables.
Before our orders arrived, we received a complimentary order of spicy 5-cheese dip w/pita...rich & very tasty! I had a chicken kebab w/2 sides (Mediterranean salad & tabbouli), served w/3 large wedges of soft, warm pita, along w/iced tea for $18. The price is well worth it for the quality & portions. Chicken was juicy & grilled perfectly. Salads were authentic, fresh, had tasty dressings, & both were excellent...better than many I've tried elsewhere. Everyone @ our table had different dishes & they all looked appetizing! One person had the child's portion of spaghetti w/a large, juicy turkey meatball & couldn't finish it! Three of us had leftovers, only because we were full!
OPG was the PERFECT place for our group of five former coworkers to have a long overdue reunion. We met @ 1pm on Wed, & their busy lunch time was over. We had a leisurely lunch & LONG gab session, & left 3 hours later! Not once did staff encourage us to leave! Efcharisto (thank you), Chef...
