With BBQ you have some people that try to save money buy keeping the old meat in the steamer. What this does is keep the meat tender but the steam takes all the flavor from the meat. I was in a very successful BBQ business for years and it always is just bad when you go into a place and you get meat that has the flavor steamed out of it. The sliced brisket I had the kind young men asked me if I wanted it from the lean or the fat on the brisket . The fat end of the brisket should never be used for sliced always chopped. When I showed them the brisket I wanted . They had a fresh brisket on the butcher block but they pulled some washed out stuff from the steamer and put the old meat up and cut it thinking I would not know the difference. It’s a dirty nasty little trick and I despise the people who taught them to feed a customer yesterday’s beef. It was steamed out gray. Smoke was washed out of it and the brisket had no flavor. It was more like roast beef and one of the sorriest sliced brisket sandwiches I have ever ate for $9.00 a plate. To make it worse I bought a 1/2 rack of ribs. Same thing with the ribs. Fresh meat on display but when they went to cut them they pulled the old bait and switch and out came the Day or two old ribs from the steamer. The meat was steamed so bad the smoke ring was gone from the ribs. They left the membrane on the ribs so the bottom was tough. I tried to explain removing the membrane to the young man but the said Sir we cook like we are taught in school when we are hired. Now that’s the kind of remark you get people are taught BBQ at a Corporate store. Makes sense why the ribs where so bad. The kid as well told me they only smoked the ribs for two hours. ( That makes more sense to me as to why the rib bones fell apart in your mouth when you ate the ribs. Hey where so soggy from water ( steam) they just fell apart with the meat and you got a mouthful of bone and rib meat. UMMM . I have been a BBQ pit master for over 43 years. My family owned a place and we usually where sold out by 5 pm everyday. If you did not come early you did not get BBQ. We served only what we cooked that day. We made great money and would not dream of taking Yesterday’s meat and pulling a bait and switch just because we would lose profit. Our customers never got anything but our best effort and I was up many mornings at 3 am as a kid putting brisket , ribs and pork shoulder on the pit so we had only the best for our people. I spent 25 of my hard earned dollars checking this place out for you. I write a review so you get the best your hard earned money will give you. My advise is not to stop at this place. They are not honest in their business practices of serving fresh meat. They don’t take the time to smoke their ribs and put flavor in the food . The meat was pretty bad and if they are using a steamer like the young man stated. There is a health concern with getting sick. Besides the food was horrible. Stay away from Soul man. It has...
Read moreI previously left a negative review about this location because I ordered the Chuck Wagon where I was supposed to get pulled pork, sliced brisket, coleslaw and mashed potatoes but instead received sausage instead of the pulled pork and the KB buns were just untoasted hamburger buns. Of course this was when I ordered online and picked up in the drive through. Of course, at that time I was disappointed at what I received. However, today I decided to return to the same location on Grapevine Highway in Hurst and go inside to order and sit down at a table. I will admit, I did have to wait for a while only because the couple in front of me had a large order. During this visit, I ordered the 1 meat plate with sliced brisket, mashed potatoes and fried cabbage. I was extremely please at the portions I received. When they say they are not stingy with their meat, they mean it. I also took advantage of the free condiments they have when you go inside (pickles, onions, jalapenos). The brisket this time around, tasted great, the mashed potatoes were wonderful and the fried cabbage was spicy and wonderful as well. I also took advantage of the free ice cream they offer and treated myself to an ice cream cone on the way out. The only reason why I did not ring the bell was because my hands were full (ice cream in one hand and drink in the other). I would highly recommend this location. As for me, I would steer away from ordering online and going through the drive through. You really experience how great Soulman's BBQ really is when you actually go inside to order and sit down at a table to eat. You can refill your drink, treat yourself to an mini ice cream cone, eat pickles with your meal etc. I highly recommend this location. Just make sure you take the time to go inside to order and eat so you can take advantage of the free refills, treat yourself to a soft serve ice cream cone and some pickles, onions or jalapenos they also offer. If you are really brave, you could even top your soft serve with some jalapenos or pickles, if you have such a craving. I will definitely be a returning customer not only to this location, but any of the...
Read moreI have spent a little over 4 weeks in Texas so far in 2025. Every day, I try a different BBQ place. This is my first Texas BBQ review because they deserve one! The food was great, the service was exceptional. I feel the prices are quite fair.
I ordered the 3 meat build-your-own platter which comes with your choice of 3 meats, 2 sides and a piece of Texas toast. For my meats, I selected lean brisket, turkey and ham. For my sides I selected the Texas cream corn and spicy potatoes. I also ordered an extra side and selected baked mac and cheese, plus an extra piece of toast. What can I say, I'm a carb junkie! I had a choice of original or spicy BBQ sauce. I chose the spicy. I also ordered a regular size drink as I was dining in and refills are free. Plus, like most BBQ places in this area of Texas, you are offered free self-serve ice cream. All this for under $26.
Did I eat it all? No, but I did try everything before boxing up my leftovers. Every selection I chose was absolutely delicious. All 3 meats were making me want to go order more. Soulman's BBQ has the most flavorful cream corn I've ever eaten. The spicy potatoes are great with a nice kick to them and I'm please to say, the baked mac and cheese is really good and NOT Stouffers being passed on as their own recipe. For me, their spicy BBQ sauce is spot on. Thick enough it'll stick to the meat, and the flavor was phenomenal.
The restaurant is super clean and the staff is very friendly. Everyone was smiling and answered any questions I had without treating me as a bother.
If y'all looking to get your soul-full with great BBQ and even better service, head on over to Soulman's BBQ in Hurst, Texas, on Grapevine Hwy. You will not be...
