As I was waiting to go to a local estate sale this morning (I had a 2.5 hour wait), I Googled a nearby place to have breakfast. I stumbled across a really nice spot in Hyde Park (next to the Hyde Park Arts Center), Almendro Cafe. I had the avocado toast and coffee...so delicious. It's a great place for breakfast/brunch food, beautiful ambiance and a nice art gallery next door...a recommend. 💯💯

Beautiful place! We tried the avocado toast with a perfectly cooked over medium egg. And the veggie sandwich which was piled high with fresh veggies and a delicious thin egg! The cold brew was generous for a medium and caramel in flavor! The earl grey tea was delicious and aromatic! We will definitely come back and are excited to try the empanadas, tamales, chilequiles and tacos too!

My first experience at Almendro was good. However, my second experience was disgusting. I witnessed the cashier (Jasmine) making my food without gloves. Also, the tray my food was served on was dirty & there was hair on it. Won’t be returning, a waste of $15. I couldn’t even eat my food. The pastries are often stale as well.

We went on opening day and ordered tamales and horchata. The service was fine, though they seemed a bit stressed, which is normal for the first day. The space is nice, but it was empty when we were there and felt very quiet. The horchata was tasty. The tamales had good flavor, but they were a little dry and came lukewarm. There was nothing gluten-free except the tamales, so we weren’t able to try anything else. I assume some of the kinks will get worked out as time goes by, but my biggest recommendation for this new business would be to offer in-house ceramic plates and real glasses. It was a big turn-off (not to mention not environmentally friendly) to be served everything in plastic takeout containers despite dining there. I will be back to try coffee next time (thanks for offering dairy free milk options!) and I hope to see a few improvements. I love the idea of a cafĂ© with Mexican heritage and would love to see more Mexican drinks...

Excellent (if pricy) authentic Mexican food and light fare. Polite and friendly staff. The cuisine feels like a little slice of Mexico, with daily fresh-baked snacks and desserts (empanadas and churros, for example), prepackaged treats, and so on. The staff seem extremely passionate about the cuisine, and it's charming and refreshing.

The downsides: The WiFi is incomprehensibly horrendous. Some day it's functional (but poor) and others it is unusable. About half the tables/chairs aren't comfortable: they're slatted, folded affairs.

As of right now, it's an excellent lunch or snack spot, but not a great cafe. But in theory I imagine the WiFi should be straightforward to fix, and in that case it will immediately shoot up to 4-5...

I came here at 9am on a Saturday, there were 3 people in the whole place. They have samples sitting out, and a coffee menu. My son got a churro. It was a little stale. My partner got a game and cheese empanada, and liked it. I ordered a hot coffee and a spinach egg sandwich on an English muffin. After 15 minutes and multiple folks coming in and out the sandwich had not come so I asked about it. The two staff looked at each other and said okay 1 minute. 10 minutes later and the sandwich was ready, on a croissant. It was okay. Definitely not worth 25 minutes. It comes with an orange slice and a slice of cantaloupe.

Unfortunately, no one’s fault, but the my coffee cup was leaking everywhere and they didn’t have a key to...
