I ate breakfast at Valois on Sunday morning, June 19th, 2022. The large menu offers a sizable selection of breakfast options.
I was hungry. I ordered pancakes with a generous helping of blueberries on the side, oatmeal which came with brown sugar and a small portion of raisins on the side, hash browns, orange juice, and water.
A sign on the outside of the restaurant says you can "see your food." Indeed, I saw the person who took my order scoop my oatmeal from a huge pot into a bowl, stir my hash browns on the grill then plop a generous portion on a plate, and meanwhile I watched another person pour pancake batter on a grill and prepare my pancakes.
I paid a third person working as cashier for my food at the counter, and the food and juice were ready quickly, almost as soon as I paid for them it seemed. After I took my seat, a waitress brought two glasses of ice water. I'm a big water drinker and appreciated getting two glasses.
The food was tasty and reasonably priced.
I planned to visit the Museum of Science and Industry and took the #6 Jackson Park Express bus from downtown south to 53rd street to enjoy breakfast at Valois before walking perhaps five blocks from the restaurant to the museum.
I'm not sure about the calorie count or fat content. But their comfort food is tasty.
The day I ate there perhaps about 8 a.m., most of the other patrons seemed to be persons from the neighborhood. But my guess is that Valois attracts a diverse clientele.
It offers a tasty breakfast at a reasonable price with quick service and a wide variety of selections. I recommend it and hope to eat there again on a future...
Read moreThis is a review of the staff, NOT the food. This is my experience with a lot of details.
I was visiting Chicago and had heard of this place, so I went there to check it out and have breakfast. Apart from an extensive menu, they have a short list of standard breakfast combination items called (President Obama's favorites). What I wanted was a few different items that were not covered under a single menu item. According to their extended menu I should be able to order a la carte. So I go up and this older gentleman asks what I want. Right off the bat the conversation was tense. I start telling him I want 2 medium eggs sausage and a a pancake. At this point he cuts me off and points to one of the items on the president menu with 2 pancakes and an egg I believe and says "so you want this!" and I go no no and I start telling him again what I want and then I say "I just want one pancake" at which point he cuts me off, shakes his head and goes "We can't do 1 pancake!" as if i was asking for something completely outrageous. He basically wanted me to give him a number like McDonald's and be done. Just incredibly unfriendly. I'm going to assume that at his age, he is overworked, stressed and the fact that his accent cannot be easily understood makes him have to repeat himself, which must be frustrating. Not a good experience. Left...
Read moreAlways fresh, always with a smile, clean kitchen, clean bathrooms, staff is so friendly, family establishment as well as private parties, birthdays or just because you want to have a group event this is the place to host your event. This place has been here for awhile, the owners are so kind, always helping out in the community, by giving jobs to those that are hard workers, open kitchen, very old school, you wait in line, grab a tray, order your food, follow the line, staff so attentive to your needs, CASH ONLY, but well worth it, never a line I always get the New York strip for breakfast or oatmeal. NY strip is so tender, so tender, must try. Even the Obamas eat here, he has his own table as well. Plenty of seats, once your done with your meal, the fabulous staff comes picks up your empty plates so I like 2 leave some cash for those ladies, it’s proper etiquette in the hospitality world to leave something, that’s just me since i have worked in restaurants so I know how it is. So come try Breakfast from 6am to 3pm, great food, great service, most of all they all smile, Happy Employee/Happy Employer
