I recently purchased an Italian beef sandwich from Captain Hooks on 87th and Cottage Grove. I typically prefer my Italian beef lightly dipped with hot giardiniera and no cheese, and that's how I ordered it. Upon receiving the sandwich, I immediately noticed its temperature – it was hot, even slightly hotter than I'm accustomed to eating an Italian beef. This meant I had to wait a moment before taking the first bite, which, while ensuring the sandwich was fresh, also slightly delayed the gratification. When I finally bit in, the first thing that stood out about the meat was its texture. It had a surprising 'give' to it, almost a slight chewiness or pull-back. This was quite unexpected for an Italian beef, as I generally anticipate the meat to be incredibly tender, almost melting, with no resistance whatsoever. The slices typically should be so thin and yielding that they offer no pullback. This wasn't necessarily a negative, but it was a distinct textural difference from what I consider a classic Italian beef. Despite this, the flavor of the beef itself was good, well-seasoned and savory. The light dip was applied appropriately, moistening the bread without making it soggy, which is crucial for a good Italian beef. The hot giardiniera delivered a satisfying kick, adding a much-needed acidic and spicy counterpoint to the richness of the meat. Overall, the Italian beef from Captain Hooks offers a unique take on the classic. While the meat's texture was a departure from my ideal, the temperature, the well-applied dip, and the quality giardiniera made for an enjoyable, albeit different, Italian beef experience. If you prefer your beef with a little more bite, this might be the...
Read moreI placed my order today at 4:39 PM (over the phone). The pick two combination that I chose was on the website for one price and stated it was 4 chicken tenders, but when I called it was a dollar more and only two chicken tenders. One lady took my order and told me it would be ready in 20 minutes. I got to the restaurant 22 mins later and my order was nowhere to be found. The Manager tried to tell me that I called a different location (that happens often). I showed him my call log and asked was that their number and he confirmed it was, but they did not have my order. Another lady walked up and said my name and told me I told her to cancel the order after she told me it would be ready in 20 minutes and mentioned “a man”. There was no man present when I called and no man came with me to retrieve my order. It was clear she had mixed me up with someone else. The employee began to go back-and-forth with me; it was evident what I was saying was correct, if she knew my name and my order, but instead of taking accountability for her mistake, she wanted to make it seem like I canceled my own order, but still wasted my time coming to the restaurant. Even after the manager rectified the issue, made my food and gave me a cake for the inconvenience, I had to tell the employee “it’s okay” and it’s been made right because she would not let it go (in conversation with another employee). We have to do better not going back and forth with customers- it’s okay to own a mistake(I had nothing to gain from fabricating about an order being canceled; that was my time and my money being spent). Thank you to the manager for making the situation right and on the bright side my...
Read moreThere is no excuse for what the staff here did to my food. I ordered a 20 piece chicken wing and 2 pizza puffs for pick-up on the July 4th, 2019. I figured that Captain Hooks would not be as busy as usual because people would be barbecuing or ordering barbecue. I was right. When I got there, there was only one other person in the restaurant. I should have known that something was up when the man behind the counter saw me, made eye contact, then left to the back without a word. A couple of minutes later, a woman came to the front to give me my order. I also should have known that something was up when a man on the phone who took my order, asked for my number and not my name. But the woman at the counter gave me attitude when I told her that the man did not ask for my name, only my number. Fine. At I had my family's food, right? Wrong. When we got home, we discovered that they seasoned the pizza puffs with lemon pepper. They covered the pizza puff with seasoning?!?! And to make it worse, they did not season the chicken wings with anything!!!! I do not know why people there would do that to my food, especially when they were not busy but that is ridiculous. My family...
