THEY ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED AS OF OCTOBER 27, 2022. I had a large dinner planned for my doctoral graduation. The website has not been updated, they did not call, they did not email, there is no message on their voicemail. The note had been ripped off the door, but we noticed one on the shop that said a family member had died. I am sorry for their loss. And there are appropriate ways to handle this. If you are distraught pay a virtual assistant a couple hundred bucks to contact everyone with reservations and to update all your pages and voicemail. This is an issue of professionalism that really bothers me. I have been trying to give this place a chance since I ran across it. The menu for this place looked delicious! I called and spoke with a worker several weeks ago and asked to make a reservation for 16 for my special day. The worker sounded confused. So I asked him where he was writing down my reservation and he said on “like a receipt or something.” This ain’t my first rodeo with us, so I already knew this scenario would end with me and my family having no place to eat (which happened anyway). I told him nah, we need something better than that. He asked me if I wanted to talk to his manager. I hear him repeatedly ask his manager to speak with me. The manager basically refuses and keeps asking him to ask me questions. I can literally hear him. It was dumb. It would have been less effort to just talk to me, but I guess he was too important for that. Finally the manager tells the worker to tell me to do it online. If that’s the policy, fine. But why waste all that time with the back and forth? Seemed like it wasn’t the policy, he just didn’t feel like handling it. Anyway, I made the reservation online and it was confirmed via email. The same email that they SHOULD have emailed me at to tell me my reservation was cancelled. Now I know I am not crazy because if I had a business with my family, even my mommy, and she passed away. I would hear her in my ear saying “baby you got plenty of time to cry, but right now it’s time to handle business.” But, maybe that’s just me and mine. Please get right y’all. I would love to try it again...
Read moreMy very first time at Goree was a great one but that was some years ago. This evening I returned with my two daughters, I was so excited to dine in with them. However, today was not a very good experience. When we arrived we were told we could sit anywhere we like. The atmosphere was great and the restaurant was not crowded at all. There was one man waiting on his order and another older man came in after me. The server gave us water and menus. After looking at the menu for some time, the server still had not returned to our table. She served the older man who came in after us water and immediately took his order. So after she noticed me looking puzzled, she said she would be right with us. She took our orders and we were the last ones to be served our food. People who had walked in off the street were served before us and the older man who came in after me was as well . The food (tilapia whole) lacked flavor so much from my last visit it was unbelievable. The jollof rice was old and not fresh at all . The saka saka had one shrimp in it and the rest was fat meat im assuming the lamb. I ordered french fries for my 5 year old daughter and the fries came out last , not to mention none of the food came out together. We had finished out food and the plates were very recognizable that we were done. Instead of asking us did we need to go boxes or the check the server yet again went over to the older man gave him his check and walked right past us. She went behind the counter and got on her phone , after I noticed that she wasn't intending on coming over to ask if we were done , I politely got up and asked to pay and I just paid at the register. I had to ask for the to go boxes, however I noticed how different and attentive the servers were to the white couple who came in as we were preparing to leave. I will never return here again , this was one of the worst experiences ever . I will continue to support Yassa African Restaurant on 35th and King Drive where the food is flavorful and the...
Read moreMy husband and I were so lucky to have an opportunity to make a stop at Gorée Cuisine yesterday as our first stop on our getaway trip to Chicago. The reviews and photos online assured us that we were in for a treat but we had no idea just how much. The food was to die for! As previous reviewers have mentioned, it was a such a complex, multifaceted blend and infusion of flavors like none we have had before. Add friendly staff, fast and quality service, and a beautiful dining atmosphere to it, and you have a recipe for an unforgettable dining experience.
Hubby and I pulled all the stops and ordered a cup each of the Gingembe juice, fataya salmon patties as an appetizer, I had grilled red snapper that was served with caramelized onions, my husband had the Yassa Shrimp served with the caramelized onions and rice, and we shared sides of aloco (fried plantains), atieke, and cabbage with carrots. Needless to say, with so much beautiful and delicious food, it was a meal fit for a King and a Queen and we ate like such, with food left to go!
To top it off, we were able to meet the restaurant owner who ensured that we had a pleasant experience, gave us some interesting facts about the ingredients of a few things on the menu, and made our first experience with Senegalese cuisine one that sets the bar incredibly high for any others to come. We plan to stop back by before we return home to North Carolina and wish that we could find another Senegalese restaurant in our area (which I highly doubt exists). Gorée Cuisine is in the Hyde Park/Kenwood area that is a short and scenic walk to Lake Shore drive (near our VRBO apt). Anyone in that area or in Chicago in general truly has a gem amongst them in Gorée Cuisine. Looking forward to doing some shopping in the owner's fashion boutique Gorée Shop located...
