I had the gyro sandwich. Wasn't bad. Just pita bread and gyro meat with a very yogurty tzatziki that didn't have much cucumber. Wasn't horrible at all. Also had fries with it. Tasted fresh and needed salt but that's nice if you're a person watching your salt intake. I was fine with ketchup and salt. Party members had the Pastitsio and the gyro plate. Pastitsio wasn't bad to me, especially with the sauce, though a party member complained about the lack of freshness and it being cold( seems like they make a big man and heat up individual servings, not an issue for me but some people prefer fresh bake). No complaints on gyro plate. They did remove the disliked dish from the bill so that was very considerate, though I wouldn't have blamed them if they didn't(she's a karen so). The lemon egg soup was good. Reminded me of cream of chicken with giant rice shaped noodles. Not very much lemon flavour, but good nonetheless. I prefer more toppings on my gyro so I'll remain going to Ariston's, but it was a nice little local spot near uni. Atmosphere-wise, it wasnt very busy at all so service was quite quick. Only issue I had that is a personal peeve is was both of the workers at the table unnecessarily. It was a bit intimidating, but again, the service was quick and food came out fast. Overall- nice little family spot if you're craving a quick meal, but not my go to...
Read moredid you know salonica is open at 7 AM? i found out today, and im so happy to share it. when you get here early enough, there are window seats galore (and so we snagged one), from which you can watch all of the finance bros walk to the metra and professors going in the opposite direction, from the station to campus. kids and parents too, biking on the way to daycare.. it’s an endless flow of morning traffic. we each ordered a side of hasbrowns (only vegan option.. sorry y’all) and they were FANTASTIC. with all the works, seasoned into oblivion (there was literally every condiment you can imagine on the table). with some freshly squeezed OJ? you already know… something about being up so early and eating such a simple but happy meal reminds me of being a kid. i think i valued time more, but in a different way—not in the adult way, full of order and ideally to structure and optimize the day (and feeling anxious and awful if things don’t go to plan). more so with excitement and anticipation, wanting to do and see everything! even seconds felt longer, fuller. i was with a friend who was leaving, so with this in mind i tried to soak up all the time i could. i wish people never left, but there they were in front of me and far away, walking through the window frame without casting a second look. what a place for a...
Read moreThis was our first time here and we went for brunch. We got in and were seated relatively quickly. While we ate, a wait at the door did develop. I got the cheese omelette with feta for about $6. I thought all my food tasted delicious. By no means was it extraordinary, but I still enjoyed every bite. However, the best part was the value. For $6 I got a big omelette, large amount of hashbrowns, and 2 peices of toast (see picture). My wife got a combo of pancakes, eggs and coffee for about $8. Her opinion about the food was pretty much the same. However, her pancakes were light and dry. They sort of melted in your mouth. Some people may prefer those types of pancakes, but my wife like hers dense. So that's just a matter of style. So of you like light pancakes, you'll enjoy this place. Lastly, the service was mediocre. There wasn't a single waiter that didn't fast-walk around the place. The servers certainly met all our dining needs, but they didn't have the time to be exceptional waiters. All-in-all, I would definitely recommend this place, especially...
