I attempted to reach out to the business to express my concerns directly to them. I received no response aside from an angry emoji reaction so I am placing my review here as well.

I was very excited to try this ice cream place. I had been talking it up to a friend and decided to give it a try so i would have recommendations when we went together. I am also working on my health so i chose to walk the 40min to this establishment from my home as a treat after being active. First no one acknowledged me when I walked in for several minutes. Two people (a man and woman) were having a conversation while the other two servers were serving customers. Two other people walked in behind me and a few more minutes passes before they were greeted while I still went unacknowledged. After getting the young man’s attention I mentioned the lemon pound cake and butter pecan sundae I saw featured on Black People Eats Instagram page. He corrected me 3 different times after I told him multiple times what I wanted and where I saw it before finally stating that they did not have any lemon pound cake. This was frustrating because I stated what I wanted several times before he finally listened to me only to say that they did not have what I had been asking for in the first place. I was then passed on to someone else and gave my order of 1 scoop of butter pecan, strawberry cheesecake, and banana pudding. I was then asked my order at least 3 more times by the time I was able to check out. This again was annoying having to repeat myself for adults multiple times because it felt like they still were not listening to me. At this point at least 3 or 4 more people had come into the store and I then felt rushed out. I would like to further support the business, but I also had to let whoever is in charge know about this. I hope that this was just an off day or maybe new people were being trained. I paid $17.97 for 3 scoops of ice cream and a poor first impression.

Update 6/18/2021: I received a response this morning. Im under the impression that whoever read it first may not be in charge. The person who responded validated my concerns and offered a solution to make it right. I was going to remove this post but I cannot so I have updated this review.

Update 6/21/2021 7pm: I responded to the message on Saturday to which the person responded that they would reach out to me on Monday (today). They did not reach out and that is very disappointing. Most reviewers seemed to have a positive experience so i am not sure what the disconnect with me was. The service was terrible, the price of the product was not worth it, and the response was not satisfactory. I do not think I will revisit...

It breaks my heart to leave a review as harsh as this. I would have loved to give this place 5 stars; however, my experience was much less than.

First, let’s discuss the wait time. I approached the business with my nephew at 6:15 p.m. There was a line wrapped around the corner; but it didn’t deter me, knowing we have to practice social distancing. I also figured, well 15-20 minutes isn’t a long wait so we can just get in line and we’ll be inside in no time. Boy, how wrong I was! After 15 minutes, the line didn’t move. Not ONE Inch! An employee exited the building with trash and a patron asked ā€œwhat was taking so long?ā€ The answer was ā€œWe’re working as fast as we can.ā€ Once we finally reached the entrance of the business, I glanced at my clock and realized we had been in line for an hour. By the time we entered with our masks on, there was another line within the business! The crazier part was there was no social distance practice. It was like a regular day at the ice cream shop; except you were in line for hours without honest explanation for the long wait time...for ice cream. By the time I finally reached the cashier’s counter, I checked the time again. I waited 2 HOURS, no exaggeration, for ICE CREAM!!!! 2 HOURS. There was no apology except ā€œwe appreciate your patience.ā€

Secondly, while in line, some of the workers were adamant that everyone who enters the store wear a mask. Which makes sense, right? Well 2 people walked in, skipped the line, to talk to one of their friends who works there without masks. Not one employee says anything. Okay. To add insult to injury, those people were able to get ice cream for free. Now, I understand if one’s friend visits their business of course they should be able to get some perks. BUUUUTTTT, if you’re SUPER slow servicing patrons who have been in line for hours and they witness such blatant disrespect for their time and ā€œrulesā€ it makes you wonder if you’re even VALUED as a customer.

There are many ice cream shops in the Chicagoland area who have a better business flow than this store. I am honestly giving them 2 stars because the ice cream was good. Will I return? I’m going to be honest ā€œI’ll take ā€˜H*LL No for...

After the high anticipation of trying this place for 3+ yrs. I finally visited over the weekend. And I don't feel as if the hype was lived up to.

For starters, They messed up my order 2x as well as the order of 2-3 other customers while I was waiting.

And then ended up still charging me more (after correcting the order & making me wait for it to be made). They were nice about it but I mean how can you not be when the error was on your part 2xšŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

Service was extremely slow, especially with there being at least 4 (i think 5) workers @ the fromt counter.

As far as the ice creams themselves...here's my take...

I went specifically for the Banana pudding ice cream & peach cobbler a la mode. And was highly disappointed by both.

We had... Banana pudding ice cream- idl what it taste like but it didn't taste like Banana pudding. No chunks of wafers or Bananas. Not sure if they just blend it all together or what. But highly disappointed w/ this 1.

Strawberry cheesecake- it didn't have a wow factor. I expect cheesecake chunks, which it didn't have. I did get hints of grams though. It also was too heavy on whatever lemon that they added to it.

Peach Cobbler a la mode- HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. we go the lunch cookie ice cream which didn't taste as I would have expected. The peach cobbler really disappointed me. I'm not sure if they just weren't paying attention when they scooped it out the pan, but I had ZERO peaches. Literally I had a block of dough at least about 2-3in thick with not 1 peach. And the dough wasn't fresh at all, it was pretty hard/dry, which was hard to believe since it had ice cream on top. For $12 this should've been SUPERB!.

They give hefty scoops but for $27 the flavors were pretty disappointing, along with the wait & multiple...

I was given a clipboard sheet full of printed info and asked to basically quickly read it and check off my order (instead of being allowed to proceed to look at the blackboard menu which is different from the clipboard and much easier to read). I chose the "regularā€ size cobbler Ć  la mode which is advertised in three flavors: apple, blueberry and peach. I asked how it is served. I was shown a container with a small amount of cobbler on the bottom and told ice cream was on the top šŸ™„ which, of course, IS Ć  la mode. So I asked for blueberry ala mode only to be told that’s only available in the summer šŸ™„. If it’s not available why advertise it prominently on the window? So I order peach cobbler and was served 2 half scoops of ice cream (I say half scoops because they were hollow -- not full scoops -- so, combined, it was basically a full scoop of ice cream) on top of a very small amount of cobbler. The price? $9.99! $10 for a tiny bit of peach cobbler on the bottom of a ā€œregularā€ container. I've been to some of the finest restaurants in the city and didn't pay $10 for dessert. Absolutely ridiculous prices. I don’t mind paying if I get my money’s worth.

Not only is this the best ice cream in Chicago, but Shawn Michelle's is by far the best place to stop on the south side for a delicious hot summer day treat treat. It's all genuine kindness, smiles, and love when entering this ice cream parlor. The fact that no matter how busy they are, each employee takes the time to greet each customer, introduce themselves, and make suggestions is priceless. Make sure you sign up for the rewards program for discounts and restocking announcements. I've tried the butter pecan, pralines & cream, cookies & cream, midnight mirage, lemon sunbeam supreme, chocolate seduction explosion, and the pina colada Italian ice. They're all high quality and have the flavor you can only get from homemade ice cream, but the lemonšŸ¦sunbeam supreme and midnight mirage šŸ˜‹ constantly keeps me coming back. The only one I didn't like were cookies and cream because the cookies they chose were too bland for my taste, but I'm sure it's great for those with a more delicate palate. They also have cakes, pies, and vegan ice cream I haven't had the pleasure of trying yet.
