Applebee's Grill + Bar — Restaurant in Independence

No longer even a little bit fancy. The food was good but the service was just so-so at best. The waiter was polite and friendly. I get the feeling it wasn't his fault. But it took more than an hour for our food to come out to our table. We stopped in to celebrate my son's high school graduation on a Saturday just after 1pm. The restaurant was 30% full at most including my group. By the time we left it was still less than half full. Our group of five was promptly greated and seated in a nice large corner booth. It was acceptably clean. We had our drink orders taken right away and the waiter returned with them and proceeded to take our food orders. Pretty standard everywhere. We ordered nothing special, with no special instructions to remove or add anything except requesting the quesadilla sauce on the side. Two whiskey bacon cheeseburgers off their two for $28 menu, an Oriental salad, a quesadilla burger and my hard to please daughter ordered a sampler appetizer as her entree. The waiter took quite a long time to return and when he finally did it was only to tell us the kitchen is "now sending out" food orders again and your items will be out shortly. He said they were focused on all their large parties. My vision is pretty good still, i saw two, maybe three parties of six to eight people. There were no larger parties. The place just wasn't very busy. No one told us the kitchen had been closed for food. I get they were probably short staffed.. its tough to find good help these days.. couldn't you have just told someone it was going to take longer than usual? Maybe this is the usual here? Anyhow, when the food eventually arrived it was pretty good. Three different waiters brought it out to us. They were probably all bored. But I'll certainly hit a different Applebees next time the mood strikes. I'm not a stick in the mud or blue hair, I've seen it all and not been offended but I wouldn't bring my family here again. The bathroom was pretty dirty. I checked the sheet on the back of the door where the employees sign and date when they've cleaned the restroom. It was regularly filled out - prior to the last four missed checks. It definitely looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a couple of days. Honestly the similarity of all the handwriting on that sheet made me think they likely check it once every couple days and sign for three checks a day all at once, so if a patron like me sees the sheet he is fooled into thinking they regularly check. Only you can't fool this guy that easy. At least use multiple pens or different handwriting. This Applebees also had people openly smoking weed in the parking lot. Dancing around like idiots. That's why they call it dope btw. It was early on Saturday afternoon. Maybe not the restaurants fault, but again not somewhere I can recommend to anyone either. If that's your scene, i don't judge and this could be the place for you. Just make sure you've got plenty of free time if you plan on ordering food. I like applebees but will never go to this one again. We walked in on a Sat. (3-2-19) around 5pm and the restaurant was completely empty minus 3/4 of the bar and a couple tables/booths bar side. We had pulled in the parking lot as a wrestling team was leaving (had to be at least 15 kids plus adults). The tables were still pushed together and not yet bused by the time we walked in. There was no one in line or waiting in front of us and the hostess said there would be a 45 minute wait. We only had a party of 7.

A 45 minute wait to clear 3 to 4 long tables? I use to waitress, hostess and cook at restaurants and there is something totally wrong to have a wait time that long to clean up after one party with no one else being served at other tables on the dining side. The hostess (after telling her no thank you and turning around to leave) was quite rude and immature. Wish we took a picture of the empty dining area because I would have sent it to corporate with our 3 minute experience with the unfriendly hostess front and center. Ended up ordering food to go from a Chinese takeout on Broadview and eating at where we were staying in a much friendlier environment.

We went to Tony's Restaurant off of Broadview Rd. the following morning. They were completely swamped with not one seat empty.... We were Sat within 8 to 10 minutes (no reservations) and had wonderful friendly service in a great atmosphere with fantastic food and excellent prices.

Maybe Applebee's was short staffed that day. I guess we'll never know as we didn't get pass the rude service and long wait time upon walking in to the empty dining room. Horrible service since we walked in the door, 624pm. There was nobody at the front, I waited while the Hostess cleared a table went to the back, it took a few minutes a family of 3 came in behind me. The bartender looked at me said I will be with you shortly, i watched her clear the bar. Then the first lady then came up to seat my family of 4. We waited, I listened to a worker chat about a hallmark movie she seen, I watched as a family that came in behind me get drinks and to order, so i waited til 645pm got up and asked the woman whom seated us who is our server, she said oh she hasn't came yet. I told her No still waiting, went to the bathroom came back we have a server, so i ordered my food and drinks and here it is 7pm and i still don't have a drink. 710pm we get our drinks, we wait a little longer I was going to walk out the door when the soup, boneless wings and mozzarella sticks came out. It was cold ALL OF IT. The soup had no chicken in it for it to be chicken tortellini and it was cold, the wings were warm on the outside and cold in the middle, the mozzarella sticks were so cold the cheese didnt pull and the breading fell off, my 12yr left to go to the bathroom, i later found out it was because he threw up after eating it. It was just Poor service to only have less than 15 people in the building. Would not recommend this location 720pm still no food and the manager kept looking at me so we got up to leave, we spook shortly i told him my issues, I offered to to pay for the drink and apps.
