My friend and I met for lunch at Gates. When placing my order, I asked for a "Pulled pork sandwich" and my friend ordered "Burnt Ends." They put the food on our tray and we paid and went and sat down to eat. When we sat down we were quite confused because the sandwich I had looked like brisket and my friend's Burnt Ends looked like someone put pulled pork in a blender. I brought the sandwiches back to the register to make sure we received the correct food and she assured us that my sliced ham on a bun was their "Pork sandwich" which isn't what I ordered. And that Gates has a "special way of doing Burnt Ends" where they shred it... We reluctantly went back to the table to eat. My friend took two bites of his Burnt Ends, and it was nothing but fat; so he stopped. I took a few bites of my "Pork not pulled pork" sandwich which also tasted extremely fatty and honestly kind of cold then finally gave up as well. A staff member stopped by to ask if we wanted boxes for our two sandwiches that had two bites taken out of them and we said no, because the food wasn't very good. She proceeded to explain to me that Gates doesn't sell "Pulled Pork..." (despite being exactly what I asked for when I ordered) and that their burnt ends are different than most. She tried to get us something different but we declined because the food overall was just really bad, so she proceeded to call us "stubborn" for not letting her help the situation. The fries were the only decent part of the meal. A short while later, I saw the same staff member sit on a chair in the corner of the dining area to take a quick break. She was wearing a glove on her right hand as she wiped off tables and such. While sitting, she proceeded to take off her shoe and massage her foot / adjust her socks with the glove on. After she finished with her feet she proceeded to go back to cleaning tables with the same gloved hand. I'm disgusted by the food and staff and just spent $25.87 only to go home hungry.

Gates use to be one of my favorites. I've heard people complain about how their portions have gotten skimpy. I had a turkey nooner that had two slithers of turkey and a teaspoon of burnt ends on. I called to complain and the manager I spoke with immediately knew what I was calling for. I said "how do you know"? and she said because people had complained about the portions. Ms. Hudson told me she would make it right. She got off at 6pm and I told her I didn't get off until 7:15. She said she would leave my name with the night manager. I asked if I needed to bring it back and the receipt and she said no. I get there the night manager finds my name and was about to have them remake my sandwich and here comes some guy I guess her manager saying they need the food and the receipt. I began to get irritated because the manager who I spoke with earlier said I didn't need either. The receipt was in my daughters car. She bought my lunch and I was coming straight from work. We go back and forth and here comes another guy from the back. He proceeds to tell me about the policy and I told him that I spoke to the day manager. I told him that I can show him the post I made on Facebook. He looks at the pictures and says that how much meat you're supposed to get on a nooner because it's a lunch special. We go back and forth and he finally agreed to give me my food. The guy in the back fixing my food must've put too much meat on the sandwich he went back there to show him how to make the sandwich. Never again. I know I'm one person but with there portion sizes they're going to keep losing customers and getting complaints.

This is definitely not the Gates it used to be. Sure, the famous sauce, fries and smoky flavor are still there, but, literally, at what cost? Talk about sticker shock: Most entrees are a la carte, and you could easily spend $25-30 on a main dish and a couple of sides. My small order of beans was a whopping $6.45 (about half a cup’s worth). One pricing exception was the BBQ hamburger and fries, which cost $7.50. My beef on bun, while large and fairly flavorful, was quite fatty, even though I ordered it “lean-as.” My beans were almost sickeningly sweet, with seemingly more syrupy goo than beans, and my wife found her hamburger completely unremarkable. Not to be outdone, the lackluster service was somewhat disorganized and decidedly slow, with about 15 minutes spent in an uncrowded line, and we later had to flag down an attendant just to get some packets of ketchup. Plus, it’s always a major turn-off when I have to trudge through a slow-moving line to order at a counter, only to be asked both on the credit-card screen and by a printed sign at the register about tipping. One of these days, I hope these places will understand that tipping is for much more labor-intensive table service, not counter service, where you’re schlepping your own tray along the assembly line like at a school cafeteria. Honestly, I expect much better from Kansas City barbecue, and Gates used to deliver. Now, it seems things have changed.

Traveled to Missouri for basketball tournaments and we were all excited to try some world famous Gates. Our entire team parents and coaches went out for dinner only to be met by complete rudeness and horrible customer service. The lady at the register Friday evening around 9pm was the worst lady ever, she hollered from the time we came in the door at every person in that line. We felt so uncomfortable as we had no clue how to order and she was not in the least bit helpful with that. In fact we were made to feel like we were more of a inconvenience than anything at all, everyone in our party felt the same way she did not make the experience pleasant. After being yelled at and having no questions about the menu answered at all we finally managed to figure out what we wanted and was then seated out in the patio dining space by the sweetest older lady. At least the customer service in the floor is much better than that of the register. The food was good but the way that woman at the register acted she should not be the first person of contact that someone experiences at this establishment, especially people from out of town. I’m sure you have lost customers at this location just because of her. I won’t ever come back to this location and I would never recommend it to anyone in fact I will make sure to tell everyone I know that if they are here DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION!!! I gave one star because I had to in order to post the review but honestly my...
