Update: "All's well that ends better" (The Hobbit) Amazing going there the next day. The female cashier was so nice. She had a very positive message on her hoodie (two actually) and though they were understaffed, the wait gave me time to catch up on a book that concerns very recent (21st century) and older events yet concerned a 1970s/1980s theme consistent with the times that I had used to frequent A&W with Dad as a kid. The whole thing was dreamily nostalgic, the food very good and the food service person wonderful! And...you could still get glass mugs! You do have to request these though—so be sure to.
This place is a complete mockery with A&w once was growing up! Totally insane no one is at the drive-thru speaker so I just drive through some and shouts wait! Then I decided to go into the dining room and an employee on a cigarette break tells me that the dining room has closed at 8:00. Then she tells me the speakers broken and we go to the window. I mean don't get me wrong I appreciated this information and that was nice that's one of the reasons I'm adding one star. Then at the drive-thru I asked about their bacon double cheeseburger she said they're out of bacon. Then she says the girls off so they can't make any burgers. So I said can I get like any burgers and she's like no the girls off and also we're out of bacon. Then it turns out this was another way of saying that A&w had closed at 8:00 and only Long John silver's was open something the employee on the cigarette break had not mentioned. I went back the next day and the line was insanely long and not moving. Again don't get me wrong I'm not really blaming the staff they're understaffed in the place is just kind of completely a rundown mass. There's an interesting picture on the wall of Long John silver's. But you know childhood memories of A&w root beer from the '70s were completely shattered! It appeared and I could be wrong about this The only way you could get root beer in a glass mug was to buy one. At least that option still existed! Allied one more star for that. I actually just gave up on A&w Root beer is a long lost dream of going there with your dad as a little kid... I guess it's just lost in the land of nostalgia...
Read moreLike everyone has already said this place is a nasty joke. Waited 20+ minutes for two simple meals. The first cashier didn't even know they had chicken strips. Their ice machine is down in the dining room and they don't bother telling anyone. Several sodas were empty in the dining room as well and instead of fixing it they just filled your cup in drive thru and talked to their friends. After trying two different sodas that tasted putrid I asked for a bottled water. I was told they're out and she doesn't know when they'll order more, then she just stared at me. The bathroom smelled terrible, the toilet was brown, and when I attempted to wash my hands before eating, drain flies flew everywhere out of the drain. Needless to say I didn't use the facilities. The food tasted like old grease, although it was hot. Other customers around us were having the same issues. One group even left after waiting 10 minutes at the register and getting no help. What a useless place. Either need all new teams or its time to shut...
Read moreI pulled up to drive-in ordering window 15 minutes before closing with three hungry kids excited to get burgers and root beer floats. No response from employees. We could see the employees in the back of the restaurant. We waited five minutes while my kids looked up an alternative nearby, Hi Boy was a few minutes away and they sell burgers and shakes, so on our way out we noticed employees had the back door open and we could them three employees standing around laughing and having a great time. Giving this place one star for poor service and atmosphere. Our experience at Hi Boy was excellent, we showed up 3 minutes until close and felt welcomed by the multiple employees. Thank you so much A&W at East 40th St, my kids are now Hi Boy fans. It's only 2 minutes away from A&W. My kids are...
