Hemingway's — Restaurant in Irmo

Hemmingways’s is a place that I have frequented in Irmo for a couple of years now. So much so that I’ve developed a great relationship with many of the bartenders, patrons, and one of the owners. However, Darren has yet again caused a very unfortunate experience, to not just myself, but my entire party, that has made Hemmingway’s our Sunday norm after our bowling league.

Despite being ignored while he served patrons who arrived after us, we didn’t complain, express our disdain, or disagreement. However, we were not met with the same level of patience when he finally acknowledged us. Since he’s sees us weekly, we expected to receive a menu, in the same manner he has done every other week. Instead he demanded we speak, or he would go to another guest, and when we asked questions regarding the menu, he proceeded to say “this isn’t you’re first time here, so you either know what you want, or I’m skipping you.” While continuing to audibly sigh, and create a scene about our menu inquiries, despite having not provided us with a SINGLE menu. While we are regulars, the individual who was ordering doesn’t typically order, and doesn’t have the menu memorized even though Darren seems to think we should. Nonetheless, we aren’t hired staff either and aren’t required to have the menu memorized.

He behaved wildly unprofessional, enough so to ensure our entire group will not be returning as patrons to Hemmingway’s. A guest should never be humiliated in general, much less loud enough for other patrons to be laughing at the behavior. I reviewed Hemingway's about 5 years ago when it was in another location in the same shopping center. Not much has changed except it is a lot bigger, and the windows are clean. More importantly, you have to go to the outside patio area to smoke. It is still seat yourself and it is still no frills and very boisterous with the video games, TVs, pool tables, and loud shouts of encouragement or derision based on how the video games were going. We visited on a Monday night about 5:30 and the men outnumbered the women by about 10 to 1. A friend recommended the wings there so that's what I ordered: Lemon Pepper at the suggestion of the waitress. As with every other wing place that I have ordered Lemon Pepper wings from, they were neither Lemony nor Peppery. What they were, were salty. Oh my goodness. I have never had such salty food in my life except when it was a mistake. And I love salt. I put it on everything. The wings were cooked very well, and I could tell I probably would have enjoyed them had I ordered another flavor. Now my husband. My husband loved his wild something something chicken sandwich and the potato salad. I tasted the potato salad and it was indeed very good. He cannot stop talking about the place (the food) and wants to go back ASAP. He would give the place 4 1/2 stars. I would give it a too early to tell benefit of the doubt 3 stars. So consider this a 3 1/2 star review. We decided to try this place for dinner. We got the Dirty fries as a appetizer. Very good. I got the Philly Beef Cheese Steak with Onion Rings. And my Husband Got The Sriracha And Garlic Parmesean Wings . Although being the only Bartender/ Server there on a Busier Labor Day Adrian took awesome care, and checked on us often while running bk and forth with other patrons. Only thing that needed attention was A Good Wall and Booth Cleaning . Walls were dingy , Booths were sticky with grit n grime . I Worked in the Restaurant industry 14 years so I guess it pops out to some Patrons more., I always bought in bulk, and took my own Clorox Redi Wipes to clean with because my old job was to cheap to furnish them, and got rid of night maintenance to save Corporate money .
