Universal Bakery — Restaurant in Irving

My friend had recommended this place and went with some decent expectations and here is what I find:

(1) The place lacks hygiene - I went right after they opened and order veg grill sandwich - they had placed a cleaning rag in the panini grill - yes a rag and he threw the rag on the floor when he was getting the grill ready. Any food equipment cleaning needs a different clean set of rags and not the same ones to be used on the floor

(2) Frozen/Stored food - When I ordered Pav Bhaji - he put a block of something into the pan, it was pre-prepared smashed food, maybe frozen food they get from India ? It was obviously not fresh and did not taste anything like the vegetables they should ideally taste like

(3) No restrooms in the shop

(4) Super expensive - Extra pava for 4 pieces of bread was $3.25 - what ??

Update : I am having stomach problems after eating here - Unfortunately, places like this should be shutdown and bring down the name of all...

Except for one person who makes burgers and chaat, rest all handle food VERY Unhygienically. That one person is mindful of using gloves and changing them as needed, checks quality of pav and bread before preparing, tosses over bad ones. One other person while working got gloves from box, gloves fell down on floor, took them up, wore them, went and cleaned something, and just dug into belpuri mix directly. Another person, handling billing, wiping stuff, jumping in n out of food counter, brought bowl of cut watermelon, dug into the bowl with bare dirty hands taking pieces to put into juicer and made the juice. Remaining strained watermelon is still stored .... Spatulas, tongs, spoons, hardly cost $1.00 each, please handle things hygienically. Food is good but service can be quite slow, if you aren't buying snacks that are readily available. This is the case when only 1 or 2 other customers are there.

But a nice place to hangout in the evening and the outdoor seating is good.

What's great - Pav bhaji - masala pavs are yummy and the bhaji is very good. Medium spicy.. Value for money.

Samosa chaat - medium spicy.

Shakes - KitKat and Oreo

What's okayish - Paneer Tikka burger Chicken burger

What's not good - Bhel puri - it had an old oily taste and wasn't fresh.

Sweet chutney - basically tamarind paste, water and sugar. Too tangy and lacking flavor.

Overall, a good place to frequent and a good alternative to Swadeshi, if you're looking...
