As a few other folks have noted, we stopped here late night because nothing else was open. So it’s the last spot open on the island. They should call this place “the last resort” because it really is the last place open. First, I was happy that they had a veggie burger on the menu. But on my veggie burger, there were (oddly) little bits of bacon. I don’t think it was on purpose. I think they were preparing something else and some of the bacon slipped into my dish. My daughter said she did not have any bacon on her veggie burger, so that’s good. We had the jalapeño poppers, which were surprisingly good, although they were heavily breaded and a bit over fried. The chicken wings looked like standard pub chicken wings. My son’s friend had them. I guess the big disappointment came in the fact that I got a veggie burger, and one of the options was to add blue cheese as the cheese. It was so covered in cheese that it was hard to eat. The blue cheese was seeping out of every pore of the bread. It was soaked into the bun. I guess they added blue cheese dressing? It seemed like chunky blue cheese dressing, rather than just bits of blue cheese. It was literally sopping with blue cheese. I couldn’t taste the veggie burger or the bun, just the blue cheese. It had five times more cheese on it than it should have. I tried rubbing a bunch off with a napkin, but it was again, soaked, into the bread.
As to the drinks. They were good and strong. We saw a few tipsy people trying to navigate the bathroom.
The servers were great. Oddly, they are from our same hometown in North Carolina. What a coincidence. They even attended the rival high school. They were sweet and attentive.
Atmosphere was brightly lit and loud and had a pub outdoor feel.
The reason for the low rating is mostly because the blue cheese sandwich was so bizarre! But also, for “pub food”, it was all mostly...
Read moreWas in Vieques for a few nights last week. Stopped at Lazy Jack’s for lunch/drinks our first day. Food was OK. Service was lacking. Our server never came back around to check on us after they dropped food off. Not to sell more drinks or check on food. Waited maybe 15-20 mins for someone to come around with a bill then just had to walk up to the bar and ask the first person I saw if I can pay and leave. A couple days later we decided to try again because it was the only place with food still open after our bio bay tour. Same thing w the service. Had 4 diff people waiting on us it seemed like at first. Then no one check on our food or refilled our drinks after food was dropped. Again had to go up to bar to ask for check and pay even though we were at a table and had a server at some point. The guy at the bar has the nerve to say “you could have just come up” when I expressed my dismay for their process. I don’t mind coming up to the bar to get what I need but tell me that when I sit down. Don’t just leave me hanging and make me out to be a jerk when I’m not happy about it. Next day I woke up with food poisoning and had to stay in Vieques an extra night. Didn’t make it back to Old San Juan for our last day of the trip due to this. Had to pay for 2 hotel rooms because I was sweating out food poisoning for 18 hours and couldn’t make it to our next stop on our journey. Here’s a tip for LJ. If everyone at your restaurant is doing a little bit of everything, most likely nothing is getting done correctly. Your service and food prep/cross contamination practices are both lacking and I paid the price big time. I’m sure if you are a local or sitting at the bar/only having drinks then your service will be fine. For anyone else please beware and I would...
Read moreHello, we decided to do a nice bio Bay tour (and it was) and while we waited for sunset we decided to support the local economy in Esperanza. We had a really nice meal and hospitality at Bananas, checked out a gift shop, but then had a horrible experience at Lazy Jack's. We had just walked in, gone thru temp checks, sanitizing and were moving to sit down. As we approached our bar stools, I pulled down my mask... that's when a group of 5-6 locals got my attention. They were yelling across the bar at me, without masks on, that I had to don my mask. I wasn't aware that you had to be seated to remove your mask. When I asked about it, one of them screamed profanity at me in a very threatening way. Normally, I'd say that an establishment can't be held accountable for patron actions. This was different, however, as the waiters seemed to know this group well. They were calling each other by name and later seemed very friendly to one another (high fives and such). The wait staff also never intervened or apologized or tried to de-escalate the situation. If you're not a local, seroiusly, AVOID LAZY JACK'S. To be complete, we were warned about Lazy Jack's before going from our amazing vrbo host. I typically try to give the benefit of the doubt and tried here to my group's peril.
COVID has made things complicated, stressful and harder than usual. I feel for every business that is just trying to make it. We all should dutifully follow mandates, care for one another and be kind. Again, avoid this place, sadly you aren't welcome if you're an outsider. There are several other great options in Esperanza that deserve your patronage. Travel...
